Hello and thank you for reading my post. I’ll try to keep it short!

When I was younger, sometime in my early teens, I had read about someone who saved her first kiss for her engagement and I decided that the idea seemed very romantic and became attached to it. The decision had nothing to do with my religious beliefs, but eventually it became a part of who I was. In following years, I was always very careful about getting involved with any boys because I didn’t really know how to deal with wanting to kiss but trying to save that at the same time. The summer after I graduated high school, I started to “date” a guy that I considered to be just a friend. I didn’t know it at the time, but both of us were in this pseudo-relationship for the same (and wrong) reasons. We were both in love with the idea of being in a relationship. I got caught up in the new experiences and one night he asked if he could kiss me. I knew that if I said yes, it would go against everything I had planned for myself as well as breaking with who I am. But I also really wanted to experience a kiss, and as much as I hate to admit it, I was 18 and wanted to be able to say that I had my first kiss. So in the end, we did kiss. Immediately, I knew that I had done wrong because I realized that I was not just living a lie, but that I was using someone else. Not to mention that I was very disappointed in myself for giving in to temptation. I ended up breaking it off with that guy the same night.

Sometime after that, I re-examined the idea of kissing and I came to see it in a new light. I decided to save my next kiss not for engagement, but for marriage. This time, my decision is more tied to religious considerations. I made this decision not only for the reason of not having that extra little temptation to fall into sin, but also because I think that it is a way to show that special someone that you’re willing to save everything and deny yourself something that you want - all because of that person. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against other people kissing before marriage or engagement!

My dilemma is that since I made that decision, though I still feel strongly about it, it’s 4 years later and I’ve met someone that I care about. We aren’t currently in a relationship because we’re in different parts of the country, but we will be living in the same city soon so I do anticipate a relationship to grow between us. The last time we were in the same city, he began to kiss me on the cheek to say hello and goodbye. I took that as something fairly innocent, so I didn’t bother to go into my long explanation of not kissing (on the lips), but I’m going to have to tell him if we do begin a relationship. I have no doubt that he’ll respect my decision and help me to hold to it (the temptation to kiss him is already strong enough while we’re living in different parts of the country!). The problem is that while I do feel strongly about not kissing before marriage, I’m trying to re-examine my feelings on it and try to figure out if I feel strongly because of the reasons I stated earlier or because I’m still subconsciously trying to punish myself/make up for my earlier mistake.

In re-thinking all of this, I started to wonder what other people think about the topic, so I guess my question to all of you is what your opinions are regarding kissing before marriage? The question isn’t directly related to my own story, but feel free to comment on that if you’d like.

God bless!

In my opinion, there has to be some chemistry - it’s a marriage not a friendship. Kissing is a way of exploring the passion.

I don’t see a problem with kissing before marriage.

Of course, there’s no problem with waiting either.🙂

Kissing on the lips is not a good idea, in my opinion. You’re on a slippery slope when you start kissing on the mouth and you have to be really careful not only to avoid sexually arousing yourself but the person you are with (and I do believe that guys have a much lower sexual arousal threshold then many women have).

Your principles are sound, stick with them! 🙂 You are very likely to date guys who are going to see “no kissing” as a deal-breaker, but just remember that marriage requires a special vocation from God and if you have this vocation then God has chosen a spouse that will be perfect for you. The question you should ask yourself is: would God ever call me to be with a man who would want me to put myself in an occasion of sin to be with him?

I greatly respect your commitment to chastity! I am a person with a sinful past and a mighty struggle at present with sexual sins. I am alone and single now, and part of me dreads dating, because I have resolved to remain a born-again virgin until marriage, and I do not know how I will react if my girlfriends wants to kiss or cuddle or otherwise be intimate in a way I will not be able to control or stop myself.

I do not feel there is a problem with chaste kissing in a relationship. Kisses on the cheek and kisses on the hand are playful and innocent, and do not normally lead to arousal or impure thoughts. Kissing on the lips can be dangerous because it is so romantic and personal. I think you have a good idea in trying to avoid it until marriage.

I will pray for you, and I wish you luck in your romantic journey. I can only hope that I meet someone who feels like you and I do for my future wife.

It’s your life, kiddo. If you think that’s what you should do, and it’s not morally wrong, then do it.

Just bear in mind that you are doing something beyond what is normally asked of us as Catholics, and that you say you are doing it as a romantic ideal instead of as a religious inspiration or for love of God. Romantic ideals can be helpful, or they can be a cruel idol.
Obviously it is not kind to try and get kissed just for the sake of getting kissed, so your ideals came in handy there. Just keep an eye on the nature of your ideals, that’s all I’m saying.

Giving good things up for God, or for prudence, makes one stronger. Giving good things up for reasons of the self… that can turn into false pride or other bad stuff if you’re not careful. I knew an atheist guy that lived a life of total self-control and virtue, but with no philosophical backing. One day, he up and moved to another town to live as part of a threesome, with people who didn’t respect any of his former tastes and habits. A lot of crazy had been building up, and he had no good reason not to turn on a dime because he had no foundational beliefs to stop him, beyond his own self. So there’s a cautionary tale for you.

And yes, you should be open about your pledge to your friend if you think things are heading that way.

You also need to be open to signs from God that you should change your mind. St. Therese’s parents originally married with the intention that they would remain virgins together. But they paid attention to God, and God told them he wanted them to try to have kids. So they ended up with a houseful of future saints, including a Doctor of the Church. What they planned was right at the time they did it; and when they changed their mind, that was also right for the time they did it.

I’m not saying that will happen, mind you. I’m certainly not saying you should reverse course and start partying like a crazy woman. I’m just saying, Keep alert to do the right thing.

Umm… seriously? Chastity is a very important virtue, however I think we are asking way too much of people dating with the intention of marriage to avoid a kiss on the lips. A “no-kissing-before-engagement and/or marriage policy” would be rightly seen as a deal breaker for most people. As a woman, if I were in the position to be discerning whether a young man was good marriage match for (being married, I’m not), I would take it as an alarm sign if he thought it would be sinful to kiss me on the lips while dating!

Just to make sure there’s no confusion, I don’t believe it’s a sin to kiss before engagement/marriage. I feel like it’s more of a person decision. Hope I didn’t send out the wrong message earlier!

I agree with that answer.

I would just add that some “forms” of kissing can be so arousing that they are essentially foreplay for sex. The so-called “French kissing” falls into that category. Also, a long, protracted period of passionate kissing while on a couch is essentially foreplay for sex. But, brief, close-mouthed kisses, especially when greeting and departing, seem perfectly good and healthy and holy for a couple who’ve gotten serious in their relationship.

To me, the key thing for you is not to be so rule oriented, necessarily. The key is for you to MAKE SURE you are dating someone who is marriage-minded, and to MAKE SURE you are dating some with a STRONG CHRISTIAN CHARACTER, and a STRONG CHRISTIAN CONSCIENCE. To me, that means someone who would rather be tortured with hot irons rather break his marriage VOWS. In an age of widespread self-centeredness and immaturity, that is not so easy to find. You have to remember that people don’t generally show their true selves during the courtship phase. So you must be like a detective, at least in your mind.

Oh no. I totally got what you were saying. 🙂 I was just responding to that particular post.

God bless you too! :signofcross:

It wasn’t a deal breaker for generations of Catholics who came before us. A 1904 guide to matrimony (cited here) states: “Things which are not lawful for single people are also unlawful for engaged people, e.g. kisses, embraces, etc, except in cases where this is in line with custom and all danger of pollution and sexual pleasure is absent…” Realistically, it is very, very hard for a man to kiss a woman he is attracted to and NOT become aroused as a result.
As a woman, if I were in the position to be discerning whether a young man was good marriage match for (being married, I’m not), I would take it as an alarm sign if he thought it would be sinful to kiss me on the lips while dating!
It’s not that he thinks it would be sinful. That isn’t the point. The problem is that by asking for a kiss, a woman puts a man into a position where he could lose control of himself and THEN do something that is sinful for both of them. He doesn’t want to kiss the woman until they’re engaged because he respects her chastity and wants to protect her.

The problem is that this culture of death we live in has thrown around words like “chemistry” and “attraction” like they are means to an end when in reality they are ends that follow a means. If a man and woman truly love each other, they WILL develop chemistry and attraction to one another. By keeping those things out of play until engagement they can find out if they truly love one another before passions become dominant.

Come on… guys don’t “lose control” unless they choose too!

I agree. I don’t understand why it’s sometimes alluded that men burst into flames at the mere touch of a woman!

Just as one can have a beer without getting stinking drunk, a man and woman can enjoy a kiss without attacking each other.

If that were true, there wouldn’t be a paragraph in the Catechism addressing it.
CCC 2391:
Self-mastery is a long and exacting work. **One can never consider it acquired once and for all. It presupposes renewed effort at all stages of life.**The effort required can be more intense in certain periods, such as when the personality is being formed during childhood and adolescence.

Just as one can have a beer without getting stinking drunk, a man and woman can enjoy a kiss without attacking each other.
That misses the point. It’s not the kiss that is the problem, but rather, the passion that can result. It is very easy for one person to use passion to manipulate the other and that can destroy the relationship. Elevating “chemistry” i.e. attraction to such a prerequisite also puts enormous pressure on women to fit the societal mold as to what is considered “attractive.” It’s not fair to either the man or the woman.

I have pondered this question since I have decided to lead a chaste life. Personally, I have always felt that kissing is basically free. If I were to meet someone special, kissing might become part of it if we both feel like there might be a future. Of course, there can be big differences in types of kisses and some are definitely like ‘gateway drugs’ to harder things. Men don’t necessarily lose control or burst into flames but they can be very persistent and focused.

Your sense of abstinence is admirable but this is quite a thing to hold out on especially if you are going to date and hope for marriage. Yes, you should be very clear about this with whomever you date to make sure you can both be on the same page about it. You could also decide to allow a quick, closed mouth kiss on the lips and agree to draw the line at that. After all, this is something that some parents even do regularly with their kids. To me, that seems reasonable, safe and honorable. But if you decide to continue abstinence from kissing, be strong and let no one dissuade you. I wish good things for you.

God bless you too!

I love it that you want to save your kisses for your husband!

What a precious gift it will be to know that your lips have been chaste along with the rest of your body! (OK, so you slipped once, but that’s not like you had a make-out session!)

What a change from my generation, when we were told sex is no big deal and we could just “do it in the road!” There really was no support for saying “no,” it was a time to just give yourself away to any and all takers. Sad, so many of us have been deeply damaged from our promiscuity…

I am glad that your generation sees purity and chastity as desirable goals!

👍

Out of curiosity, what do you feel would be an appropriate amount of intimacy before marriage?

Very sweet post. From a guy’s point of view, that would be a pretty incredible thing to hear from my future wife. Also, I couldn’t agree more with what you said about our generation.

I think friendly hugs and kisses (not deep kissing) are most certainly appropriate. What one would do with non-romantic friends and relatives should not be considered sinful when done with someone one would like to marry!!!

And, referring to another poster, I’m not sure how a kiss on the (gasp!) lips should be linked to a phrase “culture of death”.;)🙂

In any case, I think it is lovely that the OP has raised this question and I don’t think it should be the start of a bunch of arguments.

Peace be with you…
