Regarding the supposed need for a “restoration”, you might find this article from THIS ROCK of interest (along with the other links I’ve included):

catholic.com/thisrock/1992/9203fea.asp

catholic.com/library/problems_with_the_book_of_mormon.asp

I’ve read them all. Thanks. Hasn’t changed my perspective, and its hard to addres the numberous points in each -

(1) I thought the first arthicle was fairly accurate in summary of what we teach, it looses itself in interpretation of intent. My sadness would be is if it disuaded any from reading the Book of Mormon. The buring in the bosom is part of my testimony of Christ - a confirmation of the Spirit in answer to my query. Mocking, belittling or undermining the feeling is a sign of spiritual imaturity. Before you bit into your first pear how would you describe its taste and even afterwards to someone who felt no such thing. A personal revelation in this manner may not happen in every case to every person, but one of many ways in which God reveals himself to us.

The Rock is the Rock of revelation - the vibrant communication from God to man. Yes Peter is recognized as the head of the ancient church, we believe that… but as the church became more corrupt and teh mechanism to adjudicate failed, the Spirit withdrew and the authority was taken away. The Apostled wrestled with it in their day continuously, without them as the lead authoitarians, things fell apart over time… I am not here to convince you otherwise, nor will I deal in proof on spiritual knowledge - can’t be done. All I know is how hard it is for families to keep a four gneration genealogy of their family tree much less a complete set of God’s word for thousands of years. Thank you for what we do have.

Finally - the letter of the Mromon turned Catholic is a sad commentary on one note and perhaps a good thing in a way (he came to his own peace of mind - it is very hard to be a Mormon without a testimony). I found Christ in the Mormon church and remember my first prayer as a Catholic boy of eight. But I have certain knowledge that whether Catholic or Mormon, that God is mindful of us and works with us grace for grace with the same and eternal objective to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man. Christ died so that we might live, eternally with him.

So if you can’t trust your faith filled feelings and confirmations of truth from the Holy Ghost, what do you trust?

Well, infant baptism is neither wrong nor does it deny the mercies of a just God - quite the opposite! But to discuss this it would be helpful to know what your understanding of Original Sin is.
Not contrary to God’s mercy - Tell that to all of the mothers who could not bury their children in a Catholic cemetary who died before baptism. I believe what the Book of Mormon has to say on the matter.

Original sin as I understood it was that we inherited Adam’s sin for partaking fo the forbidden fruit. We became fallen in our nature and that is why you have baptism near birth to absolve the child from the sin.

We believe that man will be punished for his own sins and not for Adam’s transgression. transgression because though he broke the law, he had no knowledge of good and evil yet - that’s what this whole human experience is about.

And perhaps Vinny is not a bad person, but keep in mind he converted to Mormonism. He rejected the Truth. He rejected Christ.
I don’t think that is a very accurate statement my friend. You may believe whatever you may, but God as my witness, I know that Jesus is the Christ. If that is rejection to you and me be damned… then happily I go. Nuthin you can say will change that view.

I am seeking understanding and quite frankly, your position is okay with me to a degree of brotherly tolerance. My faith is in tack and I must say you do not necessarily fit the norm for Catholic debate, but do add a certain amount of color.

If Joseph Smith taught me anything - he taught me how to ask to know for myself. The formula works, and I know a thing or two borne of the Spirit just as you perhaps do.

So how can all of these various Christian religions be having glorious religious experiences and be wrong, deceived, against the true church or at least outside of it. Let me offer a suggestion on what really takes place in all of these various denominations…

It is the practice of true principles that yields the promised blessings… I will go to my grave on that one. There are entire chapters in the OT that support this notion… but Joseph, my heretical friend provided us with this revelation from God…

“There is a law, irrevocably decreed in heaven before the foundations of this world, upon which all blessings are predicated— And when we obtain any blessing from God, it is by obedience to that law upon which it is predicated.” D&C 130:20-21

That is the principle my entire Principles with Promise series is built on www.celestinepublishing.com.

So - as you my friend practice correct principles associated with faith and 1,800 other topics, you will reap the rewards of your faith.

Vinny in post 100 paragraph 2, if I am understanding you correctly are you saying that the RCC has indeed failed, and Peter’s successors have had their authority taken away. I don’t want to jump to conclusions, and alot of times we misread eachother. But is that what you are saying that the gate of hell have indeed prevailed?

Vinny,
you and I have had no ill words, only what I believed to be some honest dialect. I have a couple of questions myself that I would like to ask you with no disrespect intended. I do ask your respect in return by responding to the posts that I have presented to you which you have not as of yet. If you truly believe your faith is correct, you must believe Catholicism wrong as you did convert as you said and have somewhat defended your conversion. In this case, you should be able to offer rebuttal to the posts you have not responded to being #67, 68, 70, 84, 85, 86, 96, and 99. I feel it is important only because if you can not refute these things, you are living a blind faith that has no basis for claiming itself the true faith over the Catholic Church which you previously left. It may be an indication that you need to consider things more deeply. Especially if you intend on writing books that support a religion at the expense of any other religion but can not attest to its credibility.

Also, Do you believe in the words of the Church Fathers and if not, how are these discredited?

You proclaim your love of Jesus as the savior, who’s very blood became the salvation of man, so how do you justify being devoted to Jesus while discrediting or discarding every word in the gospel that He spoke warning of the false shepherds and so on, warning that His church would in fact be attacked from within at times but that it would not fail and it would continue to His return, attesting that those who persevere in her would be saved. And that this is His covenant backed by the blood He shed.

How do you find credibility in this man you consider a prophet who came virtually from no where and admittedly had no beliefs in any faith, self proclaimed himself to be a prophet, someone who fits the warnings in the gospel to a “t” and the very type of man that Jesus himself described in His own testament?

These are honest questions and not intended to insult you, only to determine the credence of your conversion and desire to assert your faith true and the Catholic Faith, lets say “inadequate”.

Again Vinny all I am asking you is to please be truthfull with me, is this indeed what you are saying and is this what your Church teaches about the RCC. I appreciate your honesty, and can promise you one thing, I will indeed answer you to the best of my knowledge any question you ask me about what my faith teaches. The truth is all we have left in this world, and I am not ashamed to tell the truth about my faith either. So please be honest with me. Thats all I ask. You can PM me is you wish.

Hi Tom - I haven’t been avoiding your questions intentionally. You have done a massive amount of work here, so I need some time to digest and find your questions.

I don’t want the dialog to end with statements about what I believe and/or don’t believe. Don’t excommunicate me from the site because I disagree - please.

My personal feelings may not be held by the Mormon church or discussed publically by them either. We do not spend time bashing churches or their beliefs. I am as familiar with the scriptures as any one of you and I love them, they are my rock, sail and anchor. They are the true word of God. I have found more than 30 interpretations of the same and from the threads in these forums there is opinion, dialog, bias and positions.

I do not believe the Roman Catholic church is the true church not because I think my church is true(topic for another discussion)… , it is because I believe there is too much pomp and circumstance, ornament and grandeur for me to consider it authentic in its services.

Christ is meek and lowly in heart and I do not envision a God that would welcome such a scene of showy irreverence. I feel people have the wrong idea about God if this is okay with them. Just as I have attended some Protestant churches with microphones, multiple big screen TVs, a brass band and hell fire and brimstone sermons… they are more like Naval Academy pep-rallies then a place where you can even hear or feel the spirit. They have replaced spiritual things with the enthusiasm of the emotional response. Get rid of the Wow factor and I will listen.

“Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” Matt. 11: 29 (D-R has meek and humble - similar difference to me) God is meek and lowly in heart. This I know. And our worship of him through prayer, song, thoughts and behavior should likewise be.

“And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.” 1 Kings 19:11-12 (D-R 3 Kings 19:11-12 slightly different words but you will get the gist)

This is the voice of the Spirit I am used to, one which is as gentle and quiet as the wind - not all of the noise and/or rituals that to me put the mind into a comatose state and cause people to watch their clocks.

Yes God looks inward on the heart of His children and the sincerity of their intents (all people generally have good intents), but the ceremony in the name of tradition does not settle well with me in the least, and perhaps is the reason I looked elsewhere. It is not something I believe is pleasing to Him and it certainly never stimulated any desire within me to want to know Him in this way.

I am sorry if this offends anyone. This is not something Latter-day Saints dwell on or teach. The gospel of Jesus Christ is participatory and how many people of your faith come and go and never read the scriptures, never consider their own mortality until faced with crisis, think about the ‘deeper’ things of life, even eternal life. (rhetorical questions – they exist in all churches)

My experiences, those that are sacred and those published, have confirmed to me the Plan of Salvation taught only in one place, in one church. That is what we call a testimony, a witness that the doctrine taught by Latter-day Saints is true.

There is some common ground between our religions… yes, I even wrote a book about it… but there are stark differences in theology that will continue regardless of our dialog. The twelve tribes of Israel, central to our collective beliefs were not born of the same wife. How do you recon that one? I heard that Catholics once taught of a pre-mortal life but that was squashed by someone along the way. There are now more revisions of the Bible than I can count on both hands and feet but all claim theirs is the infallible one and their interpretation the correct one.

No - I do not believe the Catholic church is the true church for the simple reasons sited above and much, much more that I know from my own personal experience living the principles taught only by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Its really that simple for me.

I am an experiential author and probably don’t make a very good apologetic. If you want to know something is true, simply live the doctrine. If you learn one doctrine to be true, don’t assume all the rest of your beliefs are true… try them all.

I will go back and read your posts Tom this week, sorry for the delay. I have posted a numebr of unanswered questions too.

Thank you all for your patience, dialog, testimony, and even dogma.

Respectfully - Vinny

Vinny, understand, I am not asking you to return to the Catholic Church. What I am asking you to do is seriously consider all the information you receive here from those who wish to offer it. I can see you are sincere in your devotion and love of Christ regardless aside from specifics. For that reason it will (and I say will) benefit you to look into all that you are offered here. For whatever reason you are under certain misconceptions and I don’t pretend to know how or who led you to them. Perhaps from a bad experience in the past as a Catholic, I don’t know, but they are misconceived. The way you describe the practices of the Church is in no way as they are perceived by others, regardless of the debates. That concerns me for you. No one wants to take away the devotion you have for our Lord, but you may not realize how much fuller, more intense that relationship may be in the fullness of Christian Faith and the sacraments. Step outside of the box and look deeper, thats all I would ask of you. I have no doubt the Holy Spirit will guide you in the right direction in time. Let Him help you sort it all out.
Read over the information in your time and get back to me or any of us you choose with your thoughts and we will be glad to continue our dialog. You couldn’t publish a completely truthful book by ignoring the substance or without knowing the truth but thats up to you to find out about.

Hey Vinny,

Have you started a comparative analysis with the KJV and Douay-Rheims since you bought a copy of the D-R the other night??

Yes - I worked on it for several hours this morning before Bible study. I had the KJV, D-B and Apocrypha laid side by side until I got it put together (googled some too.) I put together a page I have drafted of the index for OT/NT/Apoc…etc.

I would like to provide that to you so you can tell me if I have it right or am on the right track. How can I do that?

You have been most helpful. If I haven’t responded to folks, I have been busy with things like this.

Thanks Tom - I understand, no fear. I will consider your light because you took the time to write me. Be mindful that I have stood in Holy Places and learned by the Spirit things that have cemented my heart and soul in the faith I have chosen… and with all the love I could muster in this mortal frame, invite you to experience the same. So I do understand.

Please be patient with me, I am sure you sent me some jewels to consider, and I will.

I have a book deadline that beckons me, a house full of kids (7 out of 11) and two Muslim families tomorrow for Turkey. So I will be in and out and all about. Always Something (the name of our homestead).

Have a GREAT Thanksgiving!

It seems to be going well for you. The books that are considered Apocrypha by non-Catholic are all part of the OT canon. I do believe that the apocrypha for Catholics, if it is the Bible is placed at the end. Non-Catholics place there apocrypha in between the OT and NT. I am assuming when you mentioned OT/NT/Apoc. That you refer to the Old Testament, New Testament books then the Apocalypse which Revelation. I hope the comparative analysis is giving you some benefit.

It is more than that… can I attach a PDF file to my posts - anyone know? Ooops - I see we can not post attachments.

Thanks for your email address. I sent you mind. You can attach the PDF file and send to me anytime. I hope you have found the Douay beneficial. Most that are familiar the KJV do well with the Douay

Vinny, you can post an attachment once you have qualified with enough posts. Its because you are still considered a new member based on the number of posts you have.

Vinny, might I suggest seeing as how you are using the KJV and the D-R version, you should also refer to the Latin Vulgate which is the oldest source so when you come into differences in text, you can use it as a “third vote” reference if you will. After all, the two you are currently using are suppose to be from that.

Yes I also do recommend referring to the Latin Vulgate. I do forewarn you that there are different Vulgates out there. I would pick up a copy of the Clementine Edition of the Vulgate. It was in use from 1592-1979. The Douay OT used this edition. The original Rheims NT would have used an older edition. I am not sure which edition the Sixto-Clementine superseded. Baronius Press just released a parallel Clementine/Douay-Rheims Bible and is priced at 89 dollars. Also is a one volume edition released in 2005 by Michael Tweedale. It is a Clementine Edition. You can by a paperback for 20 dollars at lulu.com. You can also d/l this version onto your computer through lulu.com or its homepage vulsearch on sourceforge. The Vulgate that is used by the Vatican and replaced the Clementine edition is the Nova Vulgata. It is not in book form, but you can d/l from the Vatican’s website. It is significantly different than the Clementine. There is a 3rd Vulgate out there and I wouldn’t recommend it because it isn’t approved by the Church. It is called the Biblia Sacra Vulgata and it is published by Struggart, it is a Protestant company. Also the website www.latinvulgate.com shows a parallel of the KJV, D-R Challoner and the Biblia Sacra Vulgata. The website www.drbo.org also has the D-R Challoner and the Biblia Sacra Vulgata, but not as parallel.
