I am just curious. Does anyone know of any KofC Councils or 4th Degree Assemblies that are established at SSPX parishes or chapels?

What are the views of the Traditionalists here on the Knights of Coloumbus? Good, “orthodox” orginization, or not?

Pure curiosity drives these questions. Nothing more.

My dh is a 3rd and 4th Degree Sir Knight. I have never heard of any council or assemblies in the SSPX–probably because the Knights have pledged allegiance to the Holy Father and to the priests in the parishes they serve. Whatever anyone with an agenda might say (not saying all Traditionalists have an agenda, but let’s face it, some do), the Knights are definitely orthodox. All their materials, meetings and activities are in line with the Magisterium and the teachings of the Church. They are probably the largest pro-life organization in the world.

Once when travelling I assisted at an FSSP chapel with it’s own KofC Council that had a “traditional charism,” if you will. It seemed to be thriving from what I could see.

I’m a (all but inactive due to work) 3rd degree knight myself, and I’m thinking of founding a council to support the traditional Catholics at my diocesan parish as soon as my situation improves.

I think the knights are great, and could be a great way to build community around a Latin Mass parish, just like any other parish.

The K of C iis a Catholic mens organization that staunchly supports the pope and Catholic Church and it’s mission.

Just to emphasize. See kofc.org/un/en/membership/join/join.html
Membership in the Knights of Columbus is open to men 18 years of age or older who are practical (that is, practicing) Catholics in union with the Holy See. This means that an applicant or member accepts the teaching authority of the Catholic Church on matters of faith and morals, aspires to live in accord with the precepts of the Catholic Church, and is in good standing in the Catholic Church.
in union with the Holy See
would be an issue for anyone in a SSPX community, along with

I think the KofC would be less likely to welcome the SSPX than the SSPX would be to welcome the KofC, but if the Society is regularized, there will be no grounds for objections.

The Knights were founded and lived two-thirds of their history when the old Mass was the norm. The two organizations could be great partners, God willing.

As a small technical point, a Knights of Columbus council is independently chartered by the KofC organization, and is not directly affiliated with its host parish. A council could theoretically exist without any particular parish, drawing from many, but this seems rare.

The requirement for being a member of the Knights is being a practicing Catholic, although any member of the clergy is welcome to observe the business of a council (which is generally kept confidential). Priests are also welcomed to join as members, and often do so as chaplains to local councils.

I suspect though the suspended state of the SSPX clergy would likely prevent such appointment. Thus it is unlikely there are any councils “attached” to SSPX communities, if simply due to the logistics of suspended clergy.

I am uncertain if there are any requirements set by the National Council of the KofC barring “attachment” to an SSPX chapel, although there would most certainly not be any bar to a council attached to an Priestly Society of Saint Peter chapel, diocesan Eclesia Dei parish or similar group.

Actually this issue is a non-issue. As far as I know, it is not remotely on the radar screen for the K of C and I really wish the K of C would not be dragged into a discussion it has no interest in.

Really? I had no idea that each council didn’t need an official chaplain. In that case, I guess an SSPX chapel could be involved since the laity aren’t member of the priestly society, and are presumably Catholics in good standing.

Yes, I am aware of this. I am personally a 3rd degree Knight, and am curious if there are any KofC Councils affiliated with SSPX chapels, and what the Traditionalist’s view is of this organization. That is all.

  1. There are 6 or 7 KoC councils around the country affiliated with traditional parishes. I don’t know if they are all FSSP parishes, so I just say “traditional.”
  2. I can’t see what would stop a man who regularly attends an SSPX chapel from being a member of any nearby council. As long as the membership chairman/committee is willing to vouch for him being a “practical Catholic”, he’d be admitted.

No Knights affiliated with SSPX chapels, period.

There is a recent movement to bring together Knights affiliated with traditional EF parishes and communties in good standing with their dioceses. The Grand Knight at our FSSP parish recenty participated in a phone conference with Grand Knights of other such EF venues, to discuss more interaction among such councils around the countries. 👍

If something comes of that, please post it here!

There is no anti-KofC culture within traddie groups. Most well-established ICRSS and FSSP parishes have very active KofC groups. Many times these are founded specifically to support the homeschooling cooperatives so popular with traddie parishes, and also to support the traddie seminaries.

When the SSPX is regularized, I have no reason to doubt that they will eventually propagate KofC groups.

Why? I am not sure what you are finding so offensive about the question.
It’s not about taking offense, although one could take offense. You start a thread linking an orthodox Catholic service organization with a not so orthodox society. There is no relationship, the topic is pointless and leads to this kind of thing:

…Pointless speculation (akin to gossip) about 2 organizations which have nothing to do with one another, one of which is out of favor with the Catholic Church.
Please save this kind of thing for the tavern, which is where it belongs.

I think it was a simple question. The OP may not have expected quite the reaction he got. I didn’t think he was trying to be offensive or gossip. I think he was curious as to whether KofC councils can or do exist in the SSPX communities.

As a knight with a lot of years under my belt, I am not offended by the question, asked out of honest curiosity.

The answer should quite simply have been "No, they can’t " and it should have been done. However, there are lots of people that hold out high hopes that SSPX will shortly be re-instated in the Church, it may, it may not. Honestly, I don’t really follow the whole argument for or against SSPX.

In any case, what happens at that point is purely speculative. Speculating is not necessarily gossip however, so I think you might be overreacting a little.

What’s wrong with a few hopeful expressions of unity on my part? Mr. Casey is the only moderator on this forum, why not just report this thread instead of de-railing it, and let him be the judge? Also, the only gossip here is calling the SSPX unorthodox.

With respect to the bolded part above, I didn’t see any offended posters. I’m a knight, and sometimes called a “trad” by others, and I’m not offended on either hand. Clem’s posts aside, it’s a nice, friendly discussion.
