There isn’t much to say except to wait to see how the remaining cases can be resolved. I don’t know how they picked those that were settled. It is a mess.

All the cases that happened after Cardinal Mahony assumed the Bishopric there were settled. All the ones that predate his arrival will be contested further.

Interesting isn’t it? I wonder why Cardinal Mahony used that as the criteria to settle the cases out of court?
I think they weren’t covered by insurance.

The earlier cases are still stalled over how much liability the insurance companies have in them.

The Cardinal has indicated that there will be a reduction of services and ministry. It will be interesteing to see what transpires.

Where does this kind of “settlement” money come from? Yes, I know, “insurance” but I also know their rates have to soar if not already soared. So where do they get the money to pay the insurance? Do they take it from local dioceses?

In Church, collections usually are for, the building fund, the nuns and priests retirement funds, etc. I wish to make sure not one dime of my donations ever go accidently to supporting insurance companies, lawyers, etc.

What a mess. You can bet some of your money goes to this. where else would it come from? The hierarchy of the church has no accountability until things blow up. that is teh problem and the reason there is so much corruption. Bishoprics are political appointments

So then is it possible that when donations are asked for something or someone, the archdiocese can come in and take a portion we the laity dont know about? If so, I will withhold funds and only donate to something specific like St Jude Hospital if thats what it takes to ensure I dont support any of this mess - its a shame people are gonna hurt from it, but until the laity have more of a say as to where these funds go.

Sadly, I think that is a reasonable approach in many diocese right now. These sex-abuse victims must be somehow compensated. Child sex-abuse leaves scars that are lifelong. How do you compensate for that?

I truly believe that what these sick priests have done, as well as the bishops who failed to allow the civil law to deal with them should be penalized. Unfortunately that does not seem to be happening.

Even more, there seems to be a feeding frenzy among attorneys who stand to get a big financial windfall from the misery of these victims and the crimes of the priests and bishops. The real victims are victimized again by their attorneys and the bishops who still do not seem to, well, behave like we would expect a servent of God to behave.

There is not a single good thing here. It sickens me.

Even with all that, can money really compensate these vitims. Imagine (though some do not have to) some trusted, “kindly” man doing things to you when were 9 or 12 or 16. Arghh!! I can’t write anymore.

I think I will contact my Archdiocese and specifically ask them where thesee type of funds originate from and if these are appropriated from local Churches. I may even contact my Church and ask the same question and not let either side know I am asking them and see if I get similar or differing replies.

This is sick, and better never happen again. But, I am so tired of people acting like the Catholic Church is so rare in how they handled things back then. I just read on another forum a womens story about how her mom was part of her towns welcoming commity and that they knew not to bring children with them because the Catholic Church would send the “priest that did bad things with children” there… I asked her, why did they send a welcoming commity to them back then, now there would be protestors with signs saying that he needed to leave. My point, people looked at things differintly, and, this has long been a probelm in society. We have all let our children down. These children have been let down the most by there families.

Today I received a letter from a company called “Food for the poor”, In the letter they claim that they can feed a family of four in Africa for a month for $10. Just think the good the church could have done with the money that is being payed out in these abuse claims. This is terrible, in my book.
