Los Angeles mayor-elect Antonio Villaraigosa said Wednesday that Mexico will play an important role in shaping his policies, reports Mexico’s EL UNIVERSAL Online.??“We are starting a new era. Instead of closing the borders, as stated by Schwarzenegger, we should look at our border as an opportunity,” Villaraigosa said.

“This is a time of great importance, not just for us to rediscover our roots, but looking to create a mutually beneficial relationship,” added the city’s first Latino mayor since 1872.

The top L.A. Democrat lamented that the recent passage by Congress of The Real ID Act would prevent illegal aliens from getting driver’s licenses if signed into law.

It’s fear & stereotyping that has the KKK & nazi vigilanties watching the borders in Arizona & California. These same people are descended from immigrants that crossed AN OCEAN hundreds of years ago to find a better life. Sadly, it’s these same people that would deny others the same privilages that thier great grandparents were allowed to have.

I live 15 minutes from the U.S./Mexico border & have yet to see a flood of “illegal immigrants” carrying drugs across the border or acting out as terrorists.

Illegals DO pay taxes and they DO pay medical bills because they’re using false documentation to get work. They even pay in to Social Security with no real hope of getting it back.
They also buy merchandise in the local community.
They open new small businesses which benefit the community.
They also take care of their own while they’re here.

The real crime isn’t committed by the illegals.
It is committed by the Mexican government - rich with money, land, and natural resources - but too greedy to take care of their own.
We need to put pressure on Fox to step up to the plate by offering real jobs/wages to Mexican citizens so they don’t need to cross over.

The secondary crime committed is by our government for looking the other way from all the businesses who knowingly hire illegals.
The people call for laws, the legislature passes the laws, but the government does not enforce the laws already on the books.

Greed on the part of American business contributes the most to the problem of illegal immigration in this country. If they wouldn’t seek out the low-wage workers the workers wouldn’t risk their lives to earn here what they could earn at home.

Actually, that’s not true.
I’ve known several illegals NOT in the system, in Illinois and California, who pay cash for all services provided - medical, housing, education, etc. They are NOT getting a FREE ride.

Uhhh…you are very misguided. I work in healthcare, and MOST illegals DO NOT pay for their health care. They present to an ER. The ER must treat them by law, and they vanish. The Hospital and to a smaller extent the US taxpayer is holding the bill. I will support guest worker programs etc when Mexico pays for their citizens hospital and schooling bills.

Mexico is a poor country. where is the tax base to pay for the improvements? it is slowly getting better, but it can’t happen overnight.

Then the group of people I’ve worked with have been the exception.

From your experience, then, working in health care, aren’t there plenty of U.S. citizens (non hispanic) who also present to ER and do not pay the bills? Also, regions make a difference…CA, IL, TX I would expect have higher percentages of illegals draining the system than in Arkansas or Tennessee, perhaps…where I suspect the system is still being drained but not by illegals as much as just those who are in the poverty range.

I just hate the overgeneralization of ALL our medical cost woes being placed only on illegal immigrants. I just don’t buy it.
