Labour Votes to Dissolve Britain

The funny thing is Britain continues to allow Commonwealth Citizens to vote in the UK despite the fact it’s not reciprocated. So I (a Canadian) could move to Britain on a 2 yr or 5 yr visa and I would instantly be allowed to vote. But someone from the UK wouldn’t be allowed to do that in Canada. It was allowed in the past in many parts of Canada but then it was done away with over time after Canada gained full independence in the 1980’s.
It wouldn’t be a problem if the arrangement was reciprocal along with the fact we share the same monarch.

Diane Abbott has continuously pledged to do stuff like increase the number of border guards, and Labour have continued to project a “tough on border control” attitude, inherited from Ed Miliband. They’re hardly going to open the borders.

Foreigners living in Britain would have the right to vote for members of Parliament, which is to say, for who governs Great Britain.
It would be useful if the author of this article knew that the country is called the United Kingdom, not Great Britain. Unless Rod Dreher has been given advance notice that the reunification of Ireland is set to be accomplished sooner than expected.

Seriously, this article is ridiculously alarmist. This news has provoked very little interest in the UK. If people are permanently resident here there’s a good case for giving them the right to vote. EU citizens already have the right to vote in all elections other than elections to the Westminster parliament. I see the sense in allowing Irish citizens full voting rights: British citizens are given the same voting rights in Ireland. I just about see the sense in giving full voting rights to Commonwealth citizens who are also subjects of the British monarch. I fail to understand why a citizen of Bangladesh would enjoy any greater entitlement to vote in the UK than a citizen of our oldest ally, Portugal. In the case of Mozambique and Rwanda, the justification seems even more tenuous, as these countries, although members of the Commonwealth, have never had any constitutional relationship with the UK. It would make sense to offer full voting rights to UK, Irish, Commonwealth, and EU citizens and to citizens of other countries who have been permanently resident in the UK for a minimum period of time. If people choose to make their home here and contribute to our country I don’t think it’s a big deal to let them vote here, especially as most of them are already eligible to vote in most of our elections anyway.

As an aside, it’s an interesting curiosity that Cypriots and Maltese are qualified electors in two ways: as Commonwealth citizens and as EU citizens.

I fear the real force threatening the dissolution of the United Kingdom is Brexit.
