Lack of Abortion Restrictions News to Canadians

Written by Neil McCarthy An Angus Reid poll released in the last week provides some disturbing observations about Canadians with respect to the issue of abortion. Politically, the issue is seen by most as taboo, so divisive that it will tear apart the country. In social circles, it’s not something that often gets discussed - no one really wants to rock the boat. Well maybe it needs some rocking…

The reality is that in our country we have no law on abortion. In short, a woman can have an abortion at any time during her pregnancy, with no restrictions whatsoever. The fact that only 21% of Canadians are aware of this is cause for real concern. 41% of Canadians believe that abortions are only restricted to the first trimester of a pregnancy.

What the poll shows us is that there is a lack of understanding around the issue. The perception is not reality for most whether they support abortion or are against it. To have an informed discussion on the topic, one would think that an understanding of the current law be an appropriate starting point.

It is estimated that there are close to 120,000 abortions in Canada each year. That’s a statistic everyone should be aware of. To put things in perspective that’s about the population (according to 2006 census records) of Barrie, Ontario (128,000), Kingston (117,000), Whitby (111,000) or St. John’s, Newfoundland (100,000). Consider any of these communities literally wiped out. That’s the gravity of the situation. Every year, just that many lives are lost

I heard these from a friend the other day. The only problem is that 99.9% of our politicians would rather stick their fingers in their ear and go “lah lah lah I’m not listening lah lah lah”

They are cowards who do not wish to stir up the abotion debate but as Cardinal Oullett said the debate is just beginning. It started with prisoners of conscience and the exposure of the totalitarian Ontario legal system that has (name removed by moderator)risoned a pto-life advocate for 8 years,Red China,Burma, anyone?; and the March for Life in Ottawa with 15,000 participants,90%under thirty. Please come next year it is a celebration of life to behold and it made the media from coast to coast.Don’t forget Life Chain this October.

This is not an exaggeration, sadly.

The government’s official position on the abortion issues is,
CDN Gov. Position:
*[Harper] has never had more than one position on this issue. The debate is over. It’s done.

I was shocked.

I was in favour of Harper up and until I read that rubbish, that out-right sweeping of issues under the rug and promoting a fantasy-world as official policy for the welfare of the nation.

Thus the Conservative government’s policy on this issue is, in my opinion, the single-most dangerous, destructive and reckless approach to an issue I have ever heard of. It is so contrary to the nature of an open, free, and democratic society. It’s like wrapping your first around a firecracker and expecting it to cause you less harm if it goes off than by throwing it up in the air.

It’s madness on a national scale, and what right-minded person could possibly believe that wont have long-term reprecussions on the nation, and our society ?

There’s nothing preventing the government from officially holding that it prefers life, that it recommends life, that it will work to ensure mothers and families in Canada will have the services they need to nurture their families. Our government isn’t even -]able/-] willing to state something as defendable and noble as that.

Pax,
Tim
