It is now definitive…the reason the RC’s and Mormons are larger than the Episcopal Church is that Episcopalians tend to be better educated and have fewer children (better stewards of the earth). This cracked me up when it was repeated at church on Sunday. Comes across as rather bigoted

squaringtheglobe.blogspot.com/2006/11/episcopoke-for-bishop-schori.html

This harkens back to the Episcopalian sense of superiority to ingornant and poor Catholics with large families (saw that on a PBS program once on how Catholics were perceived in England in the 1800’s by their fellow Englishmen).

Bishop Schori is making a name for herself. I wonder if she will be invited on Fr. Groeschel’s EWTN program anytime soon.

whaaaa?

I don’t understand, I’m Catholic.

(I think Amy Welborn blogged on this, thanks for the heads up I wanted to share this comment with a friend of mine in church who didn’t believe this happened)

There used to be a terrific program on BBC (?) called Bless me Father. If I recall it was the true story (anecdotes) of a young RC curate in England assigned to a tough wiley Irish priest. Wonderful cast of characters from a scary Mother Superior to a young Church of England priest who used to visit. The Church of England Priest and the older RC Priest used to get into it (theological arguments). The Cof E priest was smug about their intellectual superiority.

In all seriousness if Schori said this she really ought to apologize. This reminds me of another liberal Bishop Spong who insulted conservative African Bishops once by implying that the reason they did not have his liberal theological bent was that they were a backwater culture and therefore ignorant (implication) and still in the process of emerging. His pride would not allow him to apologize when the press pressed him on the issue.

1 Corinthians 1:25
"For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. "

The more educated I have become in human wisdom, the more I have come to realise that those who follow the wisdom of God are deemed foolish in the eyes of the world.

The more I trust in the Providence of Almighty God, the Creator of the Universe, the more my contempories tell me I am crazy. Actually, the word they use to describe me is “Nuts”.

“What does it merit a man if he win the whole world but lose his soul?”

This really dates you. 🙂 I also remember that program, and it has to have been 15 or more years ago that it was shown regularly on PBS. It was really very good and most worthwhile.

Peter De Rosa wrote four books about life at St Jude’s: Bless Me, Father, Father In A Fix, A Father Before Christmas and Father Under Fire.
Sounds like a good read too.

It sounds to me like she’s getting very close to the “insult” homosexuals hurl at heterosexuals, calling us “breeders.”

I wonder if the above mentioned program is available on DVD?

I am sure Bless Me Father must be on DVD somewhere. Thanks for the name of the book (whoever posted that). The series was great. Yes Richardols it does date me:D I am a Gen Xer.

Yes Vern, it is amazing how intolerant the tolerant are. That sense of arrogance pervaded the very liberal Bishop Spong as well. To imply that members of another denomination are less intelligent and frankly animalistic in their breeding compared to the brighter and more socially responsible Episcopalians is rather strange.

Seems to me encouraging your followers to die out at the earliest opportunity is not all that smart. But then, I’m a dumb Catholic, so what do I know?

Hmm. I didn’t read that from the article. While the Bishop did declare that Episcopaleans are better educated (whatever that has to do with birth rate) She didn’t necessarily imply that Catholics are stupid.

From the story:
Roman Catholics and Mormons both have theological reasons for producing lots of children.
On this, I would have to agree with the Bishop.

“It used to be larger percentagewise[sic], but Episcopalians tend to be better-educated and tend to reproduce at lower rates than some other denominations.”

"Episcopalians aren’t interested in replenishing their ranks by having children?

No. It’s probably the opposite. We encourage people to pay attention to the stewardship of the earth and not use more than their portion."

Ummm??? You don’t realize you have been insulted?

Only if I let it insult me. This lady has insulted herself and her church. I need not trouble myself with anger because what she says is simply untrue. Just consider your choice of Catholic universities compared to the Episcopal equivalent and you see she is a house of cards.

I suppose she would argue that we need all these institutions of higher learning because there are so many of us?

So that’s why I converted to Catholicism? I’m uneducated? Cool. That makes me feel humble. Blessed are the poor in spirit… 👍
