Lack of Education is the Reason Catholicism in the US is Larger In Terms of Numbers

It is now definitive…the reason the RC’s and Mormons are larger than the Episcopal Church is that Episcopalians tend to be better educated and have fewer children (better stewards of the earth). This cracked me up when it was repeated at church on Sunday. Comes across as rather bigoted

squaringtheglobe.blogspot.com/2006/11/episcopoke-for-bishop-schori.html

This harkens back to the Episcopalian sense of superiority to ingornant and poor Catholics with large families (saw that on a PBS program once on how Catholics were perceived in England in the 1800’s by their fellow Englishmen).

Bishop Schori is making a name for herself. I wonder if she will be invited on Fr. Groeschel’s EWTN program anytime soon.

I really like this one.
  • Do you and your husband like it here?
He is actually in Nevada. He is a retired mathematician. He will be here in New York when it makes sense.

Maybe, her husband doesn’t want to live with another man. Oh, I am terrible. :rotfl:

whatever happened to turning the other cheek?

D’oh! I knew my school shouldn’t have granted me admission and full scholarship. They must not have known I am a Catholic, and am thus incapable of intelligent though.

Seems to me encouraging your followers to die out at the earliest opportunity is not all that smart. But then, I’m a dumb Catholic, so what do I know?
That was my first thought, too. But it must be a stupid thought, because I’m Catholic. I’m sure encouraging your followers to stop having kids is smart. It worked so well for the Shakers, after all.

I am glad you mentioned the Shakers as I was thinking about them myself. Although not known for education ( rather good furniture and singing) as I understand it they were celibate and yes that does (and did) create a problem in terms of keeping the numbers up.

I think in all honesty Shori’s “better educated” comment was a defenisve remark due to the criticsm by conservatives within and without the church about the decline in numbers being due to ECUSA’s liberal drift and standing for everthing (except much tolerance for conservative christianity). This hapened with most mainline denominations who in and after the 60’s became more theologically liberal. Rabbi Kushner once said that a woman who left her parents liberal denomination and joined a fundamentalist group said she wished that they (liberal denom) believed in what they preached as strongly as her fundamentalist group did. In other words standing for nothing and everything with little convication except to be open doe not give people any assurance that you really believe in anything worth believing in.

ECUSA has problems and these have been all over the media. The reunifcation of RC’s and Anglicans is probably nill due to many steps the Anglican’s have taken. The Anglican Communion is in crisis due to actions of ECUSA and the Canadian Anglican Church. The Archbishop of Canterbury is “First among equals” andhas no authority to impose solutions. Some US Bishops are already asking for alternative primatial oversight because Schori is unorthodox.

Statistically it is probably true that Episcopalians and Lutherans are better education than Roman Catholics. But all of this is changing. At one time the Episc Church was the home of the elite in the (the number of Presidents and others who came out of this church is out of proportion to its size). But at one time the Baptist Church was also made up of uneducated people and yet now their are signifcant number of educated and wealthy in the S. Baptist Convention. The local SO Baptist Church near me is a “whose who”.

All of that to say that I think Schori’s repsonse was defensive due to the heat she is taking in a number of sectors. She has Bishops here in the US who have expressed disdain for ECUSA and her unorthodox views and leadership.

I don’t think that this press will do any damage to the reputation of the Roman Catholic Church as it reflects more poorly on her. The RCC is having enough other press issues to deal with some of which such as priestly sexual abuse and ocver ups are of her own making and others are the result of anti catholicism. As Fr. Groeschel pointed out the sex abuse issues are a prevelant in all walks of society but the RCC makes a big target.

This may be off topic, but this reminds me of a debate I had with a Seventh Day Adventist, who claimed there was Catholic plot to make it illegal to go to church on Saturday.

Well, she had us dead to rights, so I 'fessed up, “When we take over, the Quakers won’t be allowed to quake, the Shakers won’t be allowed to shake and the 'Piscopalians are just gonna have to hold their water.”😃

Only if I let it insult me. This lady has insulted herself and her church. I need not trouble myself with anger because what she says is simply untrue. Just consider your choice of Catholic universities compared to the Episcopal equivalent and you see she is a house of cards.

I suppose she would argue that we need all these institutions of higher learning because there are so many of us?

Well, only months ago, I (a Catholic) was looking for Episcopalian colleges or universities which had good graduate programs for traditional sacred music, namely chant, polyphonic music and organ (which, of course, accepted non-Episcopalians). A Google search for ‘Epsicopal(ian) university’ did not turn up much. I guess this list explains everything.

That being said, if anybody knows where I can find DVDs of “Bless Me Father,” I would be much interested in hearing from you. I was way too young when it aired (about 8 years old)—I’m now 23.

Notre Dame has the longest LOSING streak in Bowl games in the history of college football. They got their butt’s kicked in the Sugar Bowl by LSU. 😃 😃 😃

Hello,

In order to address the OP’s question I will attempt to explain some things for him. As an Episcopalian I can choose to ignore her comments, as she is not “like” a Catholic Bishop. You see, our faith welcomes questions and a wide variety of viewpoints. We are “seeker” friendly. As far as trying to replinish our ranks, this is not a direct goal. We would rather just be good parents to 1 child. Big is not always better. When the Bishop makes a statement I do listen, but I can choose to agree or disagree without fear of condemnation. Our Church at the local level here gets about half of its growth from children and the other half from Southern Baptists, Lutherans, and yes Roman Catholics. The Bishop is controversial, yes but I feel this is part of her talents. If she offended any of my Roman Catholic brothers and sisters let me be the first to say I am sorry, but as the news tells us Anglicans are going through a “stage” Its difficult for those on the outside looking in to understand. Its a “Anglican thing” 😉

Peace,
Jokerz
