“Pacific Rim” the movie. Aliens create monsters which enter earth through an inter-dimensional rift on the ocean floor in the Pacific, humans respond by building giant robots piloted by people to fight the monsters. Think recently made version of the old-time Godzilla type movies and you’re not far off. (Better than the recent Godzilla movie which was awful…)

Doubtful, the hole was created by an explosion and not an implosion, or some kind of giant Laser.

Let’s just say that I am doubtful. Very poor quality photos (notice how good the other photos are from the area) and what looks to me to be a poor Photoshop effort.
IF it is real, it was either an explosion or an excavation. Look at the photo and notice the debris around the rim of the “hole”. A collapsed cavern or sinkhole (basically the same thing) would not have debris around the rim as all the material would fall into the “hole”. Also, notice that the debris is very evenly distributed around the perimeter of the “hole” and doesn’t extend far from the edge. If it was an explosion, it was a fairly small explosion and, looking at the video, that doesn’t seem consistent with the apparent depth to the cavern.

Joking aside, Judging by how the ground is burned around the hole, I’m going to go with it’s a Methane explosion.
I guess this is why experts are stumped.
