this is horrible, but thank God she did not steal it, lest her hand would have been hacked off and then thrown into tar to cauterize the bleeding.

still waiting to hear about the poor widow in her 70’s that is is to receive a high number of lashings for having two young men bring bread to her home. makes me want to cry thinking about what they are going to endure.

I think lashing a 13 year old with a cane for any reason constitutes child abuse.

I don’t think that this was excessive at all. If we had such strict laws in the USA, maybe the result would be less crime overall.
You have got to be kidding! Cruelty to the inth degree… Where is Jesus in all of this? Teenagers notoriously make bad choices. Didn’t you? I know I did!

*Horrible is an understatement. This type of ‘‘punishment’’ only creates fear…which is largely how Saudi Arabia is governed. Yes, the child won’t make the same mistake twice, but no lesson was really learned…just makes people terrified to do anything wrong. Fear doesn’t rehabilitate people. It only makes them frightened to do wrong, not an understanding of why they should do right.

She should not have assaulted her teacher, but this punishment is excessive. *

This kind of thing is not a Saudi Arabian issue. This is an islamic law issue. If you like this sort of attitude toward people and justice and almost every other aspect of life in the west…be aware that when immigration of muslims reaches critical mass…as in France just for one example, your life is going to change dramatically. Whether a muslim wears western clothes or not, they bring this sharia approach to social and personal life with them…no matter the values and laws of the host country. This is not cute…it is not pleasingly muli-cultural…it is the death of the judeo-christian world.

*Yes, so true! (bold for emphasis by me)

I don’t believe it will ever happen, (Islamic law governing the U.S.), but we legally sanction the killing of babies here, which is mind boggling, so, I guess anything is possible. :(*

This is a very good point. Teenagers have a prefrontal cortex that is not fully developed. This is the area of the brain responsible for risk assessment, judgment, etc. You would think that they could understand simple cause and effect consequences but they don’t have the anatomy to make it that simple. Your point about the teenager’s ability to make choices is really the central point here.

I don’t think it is cruel at all. The caning was pretty mild considering the severity of the crime.

Teenagers know right from wrong and are responsible for their actions.

Perhaps we will see a lot less crime as the Muslim population increases.

Saudi sounds like a rich field in which to practice the art of teenage rebellion.

We don’t subscribe in America, to how Saudi Arabia governs and carries out ‘‘justice.’’ Their justice system is not one in which I wish to mimic. 😦

*Yeah, I like that idea. :hmmm: To me, that’s rehabilitative. Jail in the U.S. in some cases, CAN be rehabilitative, but in many cases, it isn’t. Often times, people are released worse than when they went into prison. I think that all justice systems should look to help rehabilitate (if possible) those who commit crimes, from minor to very heinous. There are some who are not able to be rehabilitated, but many are, and sometimes jail is their last opportunity to get things ‘‘right,’’ because they have never been given a chance by their parents, etc…It behooves us as a society, plus it’s humane, to try to rehabilitate someone.

Beating people in the public square for minor infractions, only creates a fearful society…not rehabilitated or humane. Violence will always beget violence. Just my two cents.*

Maybe that’s a mistake and is why there is so much crime in the USA as contrasted to the low crime rate in Saudi Arabia.

*What we must realize, is that societies like this don’t contain themselves. Americans don’t live in a vacuum. Eventually, that type of a violent society will wish to exercise its violent ways into other societies…ie: 9/11, etc…

Violent societies who hurt themselves, will eventually hurt those outside of their societies…that is the problem with violence…it never stays contained. Regardless of the reasons why behind their justice system.

What we also must realize is that life in other countries that carry out these types of punishments, lack the freedoms we do. *

*Ghandi was such an amazing man. I think he said…’‘if we pay back eye for an eye, the whole world will eventually be blind.’’ I love that quote.

Societies do not grow and succeed, that control their people with fear and intimidation. (and violence) God doesn’t control us with fear and intimidation, why should we control others as such?

I agree with what you say here…especially that L of the R snippit. *

the USA has too much freedom. Take for example the freedom to abort an unborn child. And the punishment for crimes is too lax in the USA. That is why there is so much crime in the USA as contrasted with other countries, such as Singapore, which has one of the lowest crime rates in the world. People in the USA are living in fear as they demand the right to carry guns to protect themselves against the rampant crime all around them.

I don’t disagree…we have ABUSED some of our freedoms, or stretched those freedoms to mean something else. And relativism has taken over, yes that’s true. But, Singapore…and this situation in SA, it is too over the top. It’s barbaric, actually…we are not animals. Yes, we need to get back to morality, but you don’t become truly free by whipping people.

In Singapore, the boy was punished by very mild caning. People need to learn to respect property rights of others.
