Believe it or not God works through knowledge, physicians and psychologists…
Is it better to follow the word of a man, or is it better to follow the Holy Word of God as we find it in the Sacred Scriptures?
23:14 Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.

How many blows with the rod does sacred scripture call for? Since your quote is from proverbs 23:14 do you think 23 lashes is correct, 14 or do we add them together and 37 is the correct number? Or perhaps we are to multiply them in which case 322 lashes should be required?. It really would be helpful if you can sort this out for us-although my children are grown and living on theri own i will have grandchildren to consider. Also could you tell me where to get a good “rod”. Should it be oak or willow or are we allowed to use fiberglass now?. i am sure you can discern this from sacred scripture for us. Thank you in advance.

Contrary to popular belief, the fact that the Nazis did something does not mean that it is necessarily bad. Hitler was a vegetarian. Does that mean we should worry about vegetarians trying to exterminate an ethnic minority?
More importantly…because Nazis did a few good things…very few…like clean the streets of criminals by throwing people in prison without just cause…does not make them good either. My point was not addressed by you…you think that islam will be a good thing for the USA if by embracing islam the crime picture improved? That was the thrust of your early post…sorry I ain’t buying it:rolleyes:

I doubt that nuns were the only ones who smacked kids with a ruler

Every time you post your anti catholic bias shows…
They most certainly weren’t. Corporal punishment was still present in public schools when I started teaching 35 years ago! I think most states have outlawed it now, but it was not all that long ago it was acceptable as a form of classroom control.

Man there are some posts on here that is unbelievable coming from Catholics!

If you ever been to some countries that the government abuses its power I think you would back up and regroup!

I seen stuff like this live and you if did you would not be doing Monday quarterbacking in front of your computer screen.

I’ve been to places that the military will just walk into a home search warrant give me break and if you complain they will rape your wife if she’s too old they will take your daughter.

How can anyone suggest this is a righteous punishment?

Some of you people need to get down on your knees and thank the Lord you’re born in a country that don’t abuse their power like this.

You’ve hit the nail on the head. The OT can be used to justify a wide range of disgusting behavior because people try to take every passage literally. Last time I looked, Catholics are not literalistic in regards to sacred scripture.

Phariseeism is supposed to be a thing of the past. I thought Christ put a fork in it. There are ways of dealing with infractions compassionately but effectively.

People in places like that should pray for an end to such oppression and, in the meantime, know the rules.

Maybe that’s a mistake and is why there is so much crime in the USA as contrasted to the low crime rate in Saudi Arabia.
It is only an apparently low crime rate. Ordinary people are relatively law abiding due to draconian punishments but people with money and power can get away with just about anything.

Rapists usually walk free, and the woman is killed for dishonoring her family. Is this justice? Does this prevent rape?

Some Saudis believe that women are inherently evil, that they are born that way and need ‘firm discipline’ to beat the evil out of them and make them behave. I think this judge is one of those.

90 lashes with a juraid stick for a 13 year old girl is excessive when a lesser number of strokes is prescribed to men for assault.

The Singaporean rattan cane is not a mild punishment. The strokes are on bare flesh and usually cut the skin. The locals will tell you that you really don’t want to do anything that would result in caning. This kid thought he could get away with it because he was American. The ironic thing is, he had a partner in his crime who did get away with it because his dad was a diplomat.

I don;t follow what these whimpy psychologists recommend. They are the ones who have gotten us into trouble. I follow the Holy Bible which is the word of God. And what does the Bible recommend here:
PROVERBS

13:24 He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.
19:18 Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.

22:15 Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

23:13 Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.
23:14 Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.

29:15 The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.
Jesus is the new covenant and He is all about love and forgiveness. Sounds possibly like you are trying to justify something?

I don;t think it is up to you to determine what is or what is not excessive according to the law of Saudi Arabia.

Of course. I am trying to justify the words of Holy Scripture as they have been handed down to us from ages to ages and from centuries to centuries. The proverbs have been a cherished source of wisdom for all of us who study what the Holy Scriptures teaches us.
Now all of a sudden we are supposed to throw out the Book of Proverbs because it does not accord with your liberalist modernist viewpoint which has been seriously influenced by the decadent materialist culture of the USA:

these comments are extremely disturbing.

so do you have a problem with saudi arabia’s law here?

CAIRO - A 75-year-old widow in Saudi Arabia has been sentenced to 40 lashes and four months in jail for mingling with two young men who are not close relatives, drawing new criticism for the kingdom’s ultraconservative religious police and judiciary.

The newspaper Al-Watan said the woman met with the two 24-year-old men last April after she asked them to bring her five loaves of bread at her home in al-Chamil, a city north of the capital, Riyadh.

taken from here

oh, but wait, who are we to speak out against saudi arabia’s islamic rule!!!

all your OT quoting can’t change the fact that Christ calls us to be merciful. perhaps you should speak to a Priest about your flawed understanding of Scripture.

We may not be have the authority to determine what is excessive according to the law of Saudi Arabia, but the world community does have the right to critique the law of Saudi Arabia if it appears to codone behavior which is an affront to human dignity and which is an abuse of authority.

So where does it tell us how many lashes should be given?

*sidbrown;

The laws in Saudi Arabia are based on the Qu’ran, not the Bible. I’m not sure why you are quoting OT, as though we in America should follow it, and have it intertwine law like Muslims do in the middle east, with the Qu’ran.*

Unbalanced and Unfair. why did foxnews distort the story ?

note, this is all-girl school,
The teacher took the cellphone from the girl during the class (since it has a camera , thus violate the school rules). But after that, the girl came to the teacher’s office the next day and threw a glass bottle on her head that resulted a serious head injury. The court judged that 90 lashes (on the hands , in the classroom) and 2 months in rehabilitation facility.

To strike someone 90 times seems sociopathic. That a so-called government endorses such a thing only legitimizes such perverse behavior. Why would any person support such an action?
