Last Catholic adoption agency in England and Wales threatened by gay equality laws [CNA]

London, England, Mar 6, 2010 / 10:38 am (CNA).- Church leaders are defending the last remaining Catholic adoption agency in England and Wales against homosexual equality laws that will force it to close. They say children in the agency’s care will suffer, charging that the government is trying to force the agency to disregard Church teaching.

Last Sunday, three bishops said that they were taking the case of the Catholic Care adoption agency to the High Court, the Catholic Herald reports. The agency finds homes for about 20 hard-to-place children each year.

Bishop Arthur Roche of Leeds, Bishop John Rawsthorne of Hallam and Bishop Terry Drainey of Middlesbrough, said in a letter read at Masses that the government is trying to force the agency to operate “with disregard to the Church’s teaching on marriage and family life.”

Presumeably, they would be gradually (or not so gradually) sued into bankruptcy by every same-sex couple that they turned away.

I believe it comes down to money. If an adoption agency defied the new regulation, they would lose their status as a Registered Charity, be taxed and get no government funding. The people who run the Catholic adoption agencies decided they can’t survive without the financial support of the government.

Will the above excuses satisfy our Lord when the individual bishops and the people who run (ran) these Church agencies stand before Him to explain their compromising and spinelessness? I DONT THINK SO! Its better to suffer, and even die, for the cause of Right, than to stay afloat by surrendering. Or selling out your principles.
Unless this spiritually bankrupt “Government” (along with all of the others that are tarred with the same brush in the corrupt and decadent West), is defied, the Juggernaut will keep rolling. It happened in NAZI Germany…Haven`t they learned anything from history???

For the Church, tax-free status was an asset in the days of good and basically Christian Government. These days, its a liability. CS Lewis said: "When you sup with the Devil, use a long spoon.". Itd be better if “The State” had no monetary hold over the Church.
Father Corapi points out that his Apostolate is fully taxed: that way, he can say what he has to say, and no one can do anything about it! But he has courage…thats a greater asset than tax-free status. Plus, of course, hes totally orthodox.
