I have a cousin who is same sex attracted and is getting “married” later this month to his partner. The rest of my family will be attending the ceremony and I will not. I had called him to rsvp and give him my regrets. The conversation was brief, awkward, but respectful. He knew I was a faithful Catholic and before I called him, I had already known through my sisters that he already suspected that I wouldn’t go.

I’m doing some last minute Christmas Cards, and of course I still want to send him one. My question pertains on how do I go about sending a Christmas Card to his partner? I don’t want to be rude or ignore him and not send him one, but questioning how. Do I:
  1. Send one card and address it to both of them, since they live at the same address? (I am Concerned that this would somehow appear that I am validating their relationship / “marriage”)
or
  1. Send two cards to the same address but 1 addressed to my cousin, and a separate 1 addressed to the partner? (Would this be considered offensive to them?)
I want to be loving and spread the Christmas Spirit and keep communication lines open with them and not have the door shut. I don’t want to condemn, nor condone them. What should I do?

I think it is reasonable to send the card to both parties, or simply one to your cousin, or one to each of them, all with a perfectly clear conscience.

We have a friend who lives with his partner, as well as friends who live together just as roommates. We send one card per address, and it’s consistent across the board, and address it to everyone who lives in the same residence.

I have friends who live together, but aren’t married. When I do their Christmas cards I do one card and address it to and . If they have kids together or are a blended family I also add “and Family”.

I don’t think they will mistake your kindness for approval. It seems they already know you don’t condone gay marriage. What they may not know is that you personally also care about them.

When I roomed with my best friend in the dorms, we used to get cards addressed to both of us. I don’t see how this is any different.
