My money is on Malachi
That brings to mind something else I was curious about. Do Jews today believe there will be (or could be) any more prophets between Malachi and the coming of the Messiah?

Hebrews 1
1God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,

2Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

Jesus is the final revelaiton, anything after that is simply private revelation, not for the whole church, universal.

We believe that prophecy still occurs on a much more subdued or lesser level. Like having GOd reveal Himself to you while studying Torah. But fundamentally, true prophecy no longer exists today, although it will return in a big way when the Moshiach gets here.

🙂 This is not true. The Church teaches the Last and Greatest prophet was John the Baptist.

Catechism [523](javascript:openWindow(‘cr/523.htm’)😉 St. John the Baptist is the Lord’s immediate precursor or forerunner, sent to prepare his way.196 “Prophet of the Most High”, John surpasses all the prophets, of whom he is the last.197 He inaugurates the Gospel, already from his mother’s womb welcomes the coming of Christ, and rejoices in being “the friend of the bridegroom”, whom he points out as “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world”.198 Going before Jesus “in the spirit and power of Elijah”, John bears witness to Christ in his preaching, by his Baptism of conversion, and through his martyrdom.199

Luke 7:26 Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
27 This is the one about whom scripture says: ‘Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, he will prepare your way before you.’ 28 I tell you, among those born of women, no one is greater than John; yet the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he."

But what about John the Apostle?

Isn’t Revelation or the Apocalypse a book of prophecy?

Who was the last prophet? Do we need a living prophet with temples and the like as Mormons claim to be necessary? What is the position of the Catholic Church? Thanks, any comments?

John the Baptist was the last of the O.T. prophets:Matt. 11:13 "For all the prophets and the Law prophesied until John.Of course Jesus was THE Prophet Moses spoke about in Deu. 18:15-19. In the Church there are no divinely appointed “prophets” as in O.T. times. But there is the “gift” of prophecy bestowed by the Holy Spirit Himself (Rom. 12:6), but this is not in the same category as a divinely appointed “prophet.”

Of course there were other prophets that followed John the Baptist (Christ fulfills all 3 offices: Perfect Prophet, Perfect Priest and Perfect King) as stated in the scriptures:
  • Acts 11:27-28 “At that time some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch, and one of them named Agabus stood up and predicted by the Spirit that there would be a severe famine all over the world, and it happened under Claudius.”
  • Acts 21:10-11 “We had been there several days when a prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. He came up to us, took Paul’s belt, bound his own feet and hands with it, and said, “Thus says the holy Spirit: This is the way the Jews will bind the owner of this belt in Jerusalem, and they will hand him over to the Gentiles.”
  • Rom 12:6 “Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us exercise them: if prophecy, in proportion to the faith;”
  • 1Cor 12:28 “Some people God has designated in the church to be, first, apostles; second, prophets; third, teachers; then, mighty deeds; then, gifts of healing, assistance, administration, and varieties of tongues.”
  • 1Timothy 4:14 informs us of the same regarding Paul’s gift of prophecy: God told him that Timothy was to receive his gift by the laying on of hands; it was direct revelation.
The key here is the kind of revelation that is given to the person as there is Public Revelation and as well as Private Revelation. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church clearly states that (CCC 67) “…Christian faith cannot accept “(Public) revelations” that claim to surpass or correct the Revelation of which Christ is the fulfillment, as is the case in certain non-Christian religions and also in certain recent sects which base themselves on such “(Public) revelations”. The last Public Revelation was given to John the Baptist.

There is a prophecy regarding the last prophets who have not yet come:
Rev 11:3 And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.
4 These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth.
5 And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed.
6 These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will.
7 And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.
8 And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.
9 And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves.
10 And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth.
11 And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them.
Even though their ministry is to Jerusalem, hopefully Catholics will listen to them too, even if they believe that there can be no more prophecy.

How will you know him when he comes?

How will you know him when he comes?
When you see a woman who is 8 months pregnant, you don’t need to ask her “did you have the baby yet?”

Some things are completely self evident. We believe that when the Messiah comes, there will be no doubt. This is not to say that huge mistakes in this area haven’t been made before, with disasterous results for the jewish community.
