This is from one of the two major newspapers here in St. Paul-Minneapolis.

Summary snippets:
  • It’s the fourth time [attorney Jeff] Anderson has been involved in a lawsuit against the Vatican, but he said Tuesday this one has the sharpest teeth.
  • Anderson told the Associated Press he believes the new lawsuit has a better chance of succeeding because he’s made a more complete effort to document Vatican authority over Catholic clerics and to portray the church as a commercial enterprise.
  • Because it has the status of a foreign nation, the Vatican is generally exempt from civil lawsuits filed in the United States. Exceptions to the U.S. Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act include wrongful acts committed against U.S. citizens and commercial activities undertaken by foreign nations.
One of the most common CAF replies in these abuse/coverup news threads is to note that the abuse/coverup took place mostly prior to 2002 and was theoretically “solved” with the 2002 Dallas Charter. Alas, not in my diocese. Our reckoning came after. The abuse and coverup in this case took place 2009-2015.

For those following all things Archbishop Viganò, it’s also worth noting that he is also implicated in this lawsuit.

Tagging @Limoncello4021 due to your posting in a prior thread about this topic here in our local church.
