Laymen involved in the celebration of the Mass

This might be easily done if there are about 100 people at Mass (like there are at our local EF Mass), but no when there are 1000 people receiving the Eucharist.
That seems to be a problem in itself. With many Catholics believing it’s okay to practice ABC, missing Mass, spreading gossip, committing sins of the flesh, not doing penance on Friday, not believing in the Real Presence, etc. how do so many justify receiving communion? This is not a judgemental issue. Look at the confession lines and do the math; they are not 1000 people receiving worthily. And why is this continued to be tolerated in the Church?

“We have never listened to Rome on this and we’re not about to start now!”
Wow. Says it all. The practice itself was born of liberty taken with the Liturgy by those who had no authority to do so. Right from the get go.

I found this wonderful explanation, a sermon really, of why we should not even be receiving in the hand to start with.

Of course there is a role for the laity on Sundays: ushers for instance. But EMHCs are usually not an emergency and against what the Church instructs. Priests should know better and their bishops should be enforcing the law. Unfortunately, the past forty years have been highlighted by the “we don’t listen to Rome” attitude.

Very astute observation. Most NO parishes in my area have Confessions on Saturdays and maybe one night a week. There are not many people receiving the sacrament when I go. Contrast that with the two TLMs that have lineups outside the confessionals prior to Mass on Sunday.

Sadly you are CORRECT:(

The Novus Ordo is a stage production, more that a Sacrifice of Worship. It seems that the more players one has the greater the production. How every sad! How very un -Godly!
unfortunately I do not go to my local parish for mass often because it looks like a stage show with everyone always clapping after the recessional. I go to a parish that is still predominantly Italian and traditional with their N.O. They do the rosary every Sunday before it and have a devotion to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel on the first Sunday. Also they have the EF latin mass there which attend mostly.

Not sure why, but today at the EF I attend on Sunday, I watched as a 94 old priest gave Communion to hundreds by himself. There is usually a Deacon or another priest there to help. He seemed exhausted by the time all had received, and for the last few minutes of Communion I prayed for him.

On weekdays, the OF I attend has EMHC’s for a group of 45-60 🤷 I really find that to be excessive.
It seems that the people think its their “right” to be a Eucharistic minister. I wonder how many of them actually believe in the real presence of what they are distributing?

Either you are mistaken or just plain dishonest because ChurchTorch did not call anyone stupid.

I wonder what you would think if some service that you performed for the Church was said to not “accomplish anything productive.”
I don’t perform any service for my Church. I only attend. Eucharistic Ministers really don’t accomplish anything, anything good that is. EMs aren’t supposed to give out Communion, only the priest is.

Your words, not mine.

What I do find HIGHLY OFFENSIVE are people who reject what the Catholic Church actually directs for what they personally feel is correct UNDER THE GUISE of “traditional Catholicism.” High-jacking traditionalism like that is exceedingly offensive.

I still wonder how widespread it is?
You clearly don’t understand what Traditional Catholicism is all about. It’s not about what we “feel” is right. It’s about what we know is right. Traditional Catholics don’t go by how they feel about something, they go by what they know about something. All we are trying to do is uphold tradition.

And you did say that. Look on the thread about girl altar servers and find your post. What I find HIGHLY OFFENSIVE is that you continue to attack either Traditional Catholics, Traditional Catholicism, or both on the traditional section. Just like that thread you started yesterday that was clearly to start a fight with the traditionals. You’re free to post here but all we ask is to be treated fairly and in return we shall treat you fairly as well.

I don’t perform any service for my Church. I only attend.
That’s fine, but as I said, I do what I do because I was asked. I never asked for a pat on the back from anyone though both father and monsignor have both been thankful for my efforts. Both of them celebrate the EF, too, so I’m sure they would pass your stringent standards.
Eucharistic Ministers really don’t accomplish anything, anything good that is. EMs aren’t supposed to give out Communion, only the priest is.
That’s just ignorant. While you may not agree with it Eucharistic Ministers have a defined place in the Church and provide a service. Are you also opposed to them serving in nursing homes and to the home bound? I would say that there are times when Eucharistic Ministers accomplish a lot.

The priest is the Eucharistic Minister. The Church has taught for centuries that his hand alone touches the Blessed Sacrament. If we had more priests there wouldn’t be a need for laity going to retirement homes.

=Onegin;6541826]I thought there was a reason for the “E” on the EMHC.
After all, some people call the TLM the “extraordinary form” and, sadly, its use is more the exception than the rule. On the other hand, lay Eucharistic ministers are the rule in most parishes rather than the exception.
And yet both are called “Extraordinary.” Right. 😛
***The Church call’s the TLM, “Extrodinary” meaning by defination “NOT THE NORM, but the exception.”

The “E” for ministers more rightly fits EXTRA than Extrodinary [intended to have the same NOT THE NORM MEANING].

The difference it seems to me is that the TLM is indeed EXTRODINARY when compared to he Horozional Novus Ordo Mass. While EMC’s are simply and sadly very Ordinary.***

EMHCs are only supposed to be used in ‘emergencies’ not regularly scheduled like most parishes do.

Tim, I believe you know the difference between priests and deacons so I’m guessing you are trying to break this discussion down to petty points rather than the actual subject.

=ChurchTorch;6541910]What a horribly harsh, ignorant and erroneous viewpoint you hold. 😦
To suggest that laypersons “don’t accomplish anything productive” when they serve as ushers/greeters, gift bearers or especially readers or EMsHC at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is profoundly wrong and sad.
The office of reading the OT, psalm and NT epistles at the Mass is correctly the office of the layperson, NOT the ordained. I think this is supported by the encyclical Divino Efflante Spiritu. You’ve studied Divino, right? To suggest that lay readers “don’t accomplish anything productive” in reading the word of God is unfathomable. It actually seems mean-spirited also.
To suggest the licit use of EMsHC “don’t accomplish anything productive” in distributing the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ is doubly unfathomable. I won’t dignify your misplaced comment about the Rosary with a comment.
I would hope you would speak to your spiritual adviser as soon as possible on your confusion. If you don’t have a SA, you need to locate a good one.
I’m curious – do you mean to offend others?
Point 1: Is this a response Christ would give?

Point 2 As the abuse of Ministers has become so common to deserve the name of ORDINARY, because certainly everyday, nearly every mass cannot and is not according to Pope John Paul II “extrodinary.”

The Indult granted WAS NOT for every Mass and everyday!

Point 3 From the current Code of Canon Law:

Can. 230 §1 Lay men whose age and talents meet the requirements prescribed by decree of the Episcopal Conference, can be given the stable ministry of lector and of acolyte, through the prescribed liturgical rite. This conferral of ministry does not, however, give them a right to sustenance or remuneration from the Church.

To Christ through Mary,

Yes, it’s the same source, Gloria TV.

Yet Rome is ultimately given the bad press on all the abuses which they failed to control. Hopefully, the Vatican will start cracking some whips after the current crisis subsides.

Well, we can’t see into their hearts. But I have to wonder how many of the EMHC’s know the origin and history of the practice itself, and of CITH as well.

Most would say, “it’s approved by Rome”, when in fact it only became tolerated by Rome after it was clear the abuse was going to continue regardless. And before the indult, it was an abuse. Now the conditions of the indult itself are ignored in most parishes.

I don’t go as far as judging the intention of a EMHC. Some are asked to do it, some ask to do it. I’ve never noticed any prancing by a EMHC.

But touching the Host is wrong imo . There is nothing to be gained by using EMHC’s or receiving CITH. Both practices save time and that’s about it. Imo, that is selfishness.
