Sorry, my phrasing was too broad in using the terms “not up for discussion.” The issue has been discussed and will no doubt continue to be discussed. And women certainly could have an official title. But as an ordained ministry, I’m sure that it will simply never happen. My reasons are better summarized at this link.
Don’t be so sure!😛 We’ve got altar girls now! There is biblical evidence for and against women in the Bible. Remember “in those days your sons & daughters will prophecy!” Or in “we are all one in Christ Jesus?” Don’t worry women won’t take jobs away from the priest but deaconess may well become open to them. So don’t sweat it so much guys!

The Bible also says “Slaves obey your masters.” Does that mean we should allow slavery?

Yes, we have altar girls now. In my parish there are servers who are brothers and sisters and get to serve together. I will not hold my breath, however, waiting for women deacons.

Hmm well I don’t lose hope! I am 45 and still believe I will see it in my lifetime! Whenever it does open to women I will be the first one in line even if I am in my 70’s!😃

Hmmm, a 70 year old female deacon?! I’m still not holding my breath, but I’m confident there will be a role for you in the Church. There seems to be a lot of despair nationwide over the lack of vocations, and yet in my own diocese we are seeing great numbers of happy young seminarians and new orders of sisters, such that I can’t help but be encouraged.

I don’t see why not Jim. Not sure I want to take a vow like a sister would take so I like the deacon role at the present time. The Bible is really sort of ambiguous on women in the Church. And I’d bet anything that if it didn’t say Phoebe but Fred then no one would say diakonos meant servant!😃

All I can say for sure about Phoebe is that she ranked #310 among names for newborn baby girls in 2011. And the other thing I can say for sure is that we have derailed fhis thread from a discussion of LCWR! Which seems to be a non-issue in my own diocese.

Why is it a non-issue in your diocese? If we could be only told what is it that these nuns are advocating for? Are they saying for instance that homosexuality should be accepted or that abortion should be as well? Why doesn’t anyone release what is so scandalous about their positions and make them known to the general public? I mean I have read that some people are supporting the nuns. I would too if I knew what they want. But how can anyone support if they don’t know exactly what they are supporting? I’ve looked at some documents but it seems so vague.

Well, I’ve read a lot about the LCWR in some threads in these Forums, but I still don’t quite get it. I’ve heard for many years about some LCWR leaders holding rather heterodox or new age views, but haven’t paid much attention.

It doesn’t seem to be an issue in my diocese, although some of the nuns here do belong to orders which are under the LCWR. I recall seeing an article in the diocesan newspaper about an order which received a “visitation” in connection with the current review of the LCWR. But there didn’t seem to be any controversy about it; one of the nuns wrote the article and she was happy about the whole visit.

And some of the orders here are not under the jurisdiction of the LCWR, but of the CMSWR. I guess we’re a rather peaceful diocese compared to many places in the nation.

In my lifetime a community of women who were a powerful force in both the medical and education field have been reduced to the brink of existance.
The power they held was immense
Much greater than that of Deacon.

their demise has been detramental to the US
in two areas that are bankrupting this country

I can’t member the last time I even have seen a sister.

The review is 30 years too late. Their death is iminate.
Shame on everyone that allowed this to happen.

In my area, we are fortunate have the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist. They have been growing by leaps and bounds. I believe that the average age of thier congregation is 27.

2 young women from our parish have entered that convent in recent years, and a third one is joining the Trinitarians of Mary in West Michigan, which is also young and expanding.

But neither of those orders are affiliated with the LCWR, but with CMSWR instead.

It seems to me, Michelle, that there are literally DOZENS of different kinds of jobs/positions/roles/responsibilities that laymen need to handle to make the church go.

Why so fixed on the “deacon” hat? There are plenty of others, and others which do much, much practical good.

Having women deacons will not pose a threat to the priesthood. Most male deacons remain deacons mostly because they are married. Women are involved in a lot of the Mass anyway why shouldn’t they have an official title if they are already there anyway?
Women “Deacons” were never ordained as such. They “Deaconed” = “Served” during a woman’s baptism.

The Church never had the authority to “Ordain” women.

Wisconsin bishop bars retreats by 2 women religious:
Bishop Robert Morlino of Madison, Wisconsin, has banned retreats and workshops led by two women religious, saying that they “may not share an authentic view of the Catholic Church’s approach to inter-religious dialogue.”…

…Bishop Morlino said that he has “grave concerns” about the group’s approach, citing the influence of “New Ageism” and “indifferentism.” In a memo to the priests of Madison, he said that the group’s activities should not be promoted in the diocese.
Interesting. Bishop Morlino continues to impress with his strong support of orthodoxy, particularly in a diocese which has a reputation for the opposite.

Peace,

My understanding from previous discussions on this is that the LCWR is a super-organization that was formed to allow several orders work together. If the leadership council itself is chastized or dissolved, that doesn’t necessarily mean the women no longer have an order/society/congregation/etc. Certainly specific ones of those organizations could also be censored, and individual sisters may be told to be silent.

It also seems that part of the “lifestyle” question has to do with sisters not living in community and not keeping to the charism of the founder, which usually didin’t involve sisters having their own apartments and cars, regularly going out to eat, etc.

Obviously plenty of those religious sisters running hospitals, colleges, and other institutions had dinner with donors, needed transportation to meetings, etc. but they also made sure that the rules of their constitutions were followed.

A search for posts on this topic by Br JR will yield many wonderful insights into how religious life changed after Vactican I and what Vatican II did to restore religious life to what the various founders were inspired to do.

Diocese comments on misleading Wisconsin State Journal article
Unfortunately, it is neither surprising that the information was leaked after being handled confidentially by the Bishop nor that the story was spun in the manner that it was. Bishop Morlino has had a tough go of it in Madison in recent years and, from everything I can tell from the outside, has been swimming up stream pretty much the entire duration of his tenure as Bishop.

We need more good men like him in the Episcopate, I pray that the Holy Spirit grants him the strength to keep doing what he is doing, for the good of the Church and of her faithful.
