The orthodox Christian position is by revelation:

Isaiah 14:12-15
How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, who didst rise in the morning? how art thou fallen to the earth, that didst wound the nations? And thou saidst in thy heart: I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God, I will sit in the mountain of the covenant, in the sides of the north. I will ascend above the height of the clouds, I will be like the most High. But yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, into the depth of the pit.

Satan (Lucifer) believed he could be God himself, so God cast him down to hell, but not without a fight [cf. Rev 12:7-9].
The LDS position is that many of the spirits in Heaven followed Satans plan. (1/3 of the Hosts of Heaven as described in Revelations) and were cast to the earth. They were denied bodies and therefore seek to influence us to do bad and stray from God and Christs plan (They are one IN PURPOSE). The followers of Christs plan are those of us who come to the earth and receive bodies.

So does Mormonism teach that we were all angels (or spirits) before we received a body?

Yes the LDS faith teaches of a preexistence and an afterlife, and that where we end up in the next life is directly dependent on how we treat others in this life.

I think you misunderstood me, what I was calling hearsay was the doctrine as I heard it, I wasn’t saying the doctrine in itself was hearsay . . . even though I believe it to be false. 🙂
My apologies. I misread “hearsay” for “heresy”! :o

Agreed! Mormonism teaches the same thing, but with more detail (by revelation! :)):

D&C 29:

36 And it came to pass that Adam, being tempted of the devil—for, behold, the devil was before Adam, for he rebelled against me, saying, Give me thine honor, which is my power; and also a third part of the hosts of heaven turned he away from me because of their agency
37 And they were thrust down, and thus came the devil and his angels;
38 And, behold, there is a place prepared for them from the beginning, which place is hell.
39 And it must needs be that the devil should tempt the children of men, or they could not be agents unto themselves; for if they never should have bitter they could not know the sweet—

Moses 4:

1 And I, the Lord God, spake unto Moses, saying: That Satan, whom thou hast commanded in the name of mine Only Begotten, is the same which was from the beginning, and he came before me, saying—Behold, here am I, send me, I will be thy son, and I will redeem all mankind, that one soul shall not be lost, and surely I will do it; wherefore give me thine honor.
2 But, behold, my Beloved Son, which was my Beloved and Chosen from the beginning, said unto me—Father, thy will be done, and the glory be thine forever.
3 Wherefore, because that Satan rebelled against me, and sought to destroy the agency of man, which I, the Lord God, had given him, and also, that I should give unto him mine own power; by the power of mine Only Begotten, I caused that he should be cast down;
4 And he became Satan, yea, even the devil, the father of all lies, to deceive and to blind men, and to lead them captive at his will, even as many as would not hearken unto my voice.

Abraham 3:

27 And the Lord said: Whom shall I send? And one answered like unto the Son of Man: Here am I, send me. And another answered and said: Here am I, send me. And the Lord said: I will send the first.
28 And the second was angry, and kept not his first estate; and, at that day, many followed after him.

Is there any biblical basis for this belief? I don’t mind of you quote from your other scriptures as well, but I’d like an emphasis on the Bible, thanks.

And I’m sure you know I don’t consider these other revelations as valid . . . so do you care to show us where to Bible teaches your doctrine of continued revelation? Thank you! 🙂

So does Mormonism teach that we were all angels (or spirits) before we received a body?
Yes, Mormonism teaches that our spirits were created before we were born, and had a long association with God in the preexistent state before we came to earth. Satan and those who followed him were denied the opportunity to be born into mortality, and progress through death and resurrection to eternal life through the atonement of Jesus Christ.

We think that there is, but you may not agree. For example, here is a quote from Jeremiah:

Jeremiah 1:

5 Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

Here is an interesting quote from the New Testament:

John 9:

1 And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.
2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?
3 Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.

Both the question that the disciples ask, as well as the answer that Jesus gives, would be odd of you discount the preexistence. How could the disciples conclude that the man had sinned to be born blind, unless he could do so before he was born? And why does Jesus answer them in the way that He does, unless He concurs with them about the same thing?

The whole of the Bible does! 🙂 The Bible is the history of God’s communication with man through His chosen prophets, Apostles, and patriarchs from almost creation until the Revelation of John. Can you show me one verse out of the Bible that says that that communication should suddenly stop with John? Don’t mankind need His communication with them now as much as they did back then? Is there any scriptural reason why the centuries old pattern from creation should be broken? Is God changeable? Has he ceased to be God? Has He forgotten about us? doesn’t He love us any more? Why should He stop talking to us now after the established pattern of so many centuries past?

Simple…

Jesus Christ was the fulfillment of all Revelation. All the Prophets before Christ prophesied about the Messiah. Once Jesus came and fulfilled the prophecy, that part was done. All the Revelation we need was given to us by Jesus Himself during His public ministry. Any further “revelation” is just clarification for the Christian Faithful, not new Doctrine.

What about the angels having children with women and having “giants”?

There is no basis for this.

So what do Mormons think of Genesis 6:1? Who are those sons of God?
Mormonism does not have an “official” explanation as to who those “sons of God” were, so Mormons are free to interpret it as they like; but I have never met a Mormon who thought that it refers to “angels”. If you want my opinion, I think that the context (verses 1 to 8) suggests that it refers to the people, the men, who lived at that time. Nothing to do with angels.

I kindly disagree 🙂

This is a semi-loaded question, at least it seems that way to me. The Holy Spirit continues to communicate with us through the Church Christ has established for mankind, and there are still private revelations that occur to this very day; Catholics simply believe that there will be no more public revelation, that is, there will be no more revelation that is binding on all Christians (see here). But anyway, I’ll give you two verses to answer your question:

Hebrews 1:1-2
In times past, God spoke in partial and various ways to our ancestors through the prophets; in these last days, he spoke to us through a son, whom he made heir of all things and through whom he created the universe.

To many people, it seems evident that there is a change here. The verses indicate that he used to reveal little bits of His Truth at a time, but verse 2 suggests that it has changed; in these last days, he has spoken to us by a Son . . . this was definitive revelation which is demonstrated by the next verse:

Jude 3
Beloved, although I was making every effort to write to you about our common salvation, I now feel a need to write to encourage you to contend for the faith that was once for all handed down to the holy ones.

This faith was handed down once for all to the saints, once for all. This means the faith will not be revealed in small increments as it was in the past, all that God has chosen to reveal to man has been revealed through His perfect Son, our God.
Don’t mankind need His communication with them now as much as they did back then?
As I said previously, He communicates through the Church.
Is there any scriptural reason why the centuries old pattern from creation should be broken?
Yes, see above.
Is God changeable?
Nope.

Malachi 3:6
Surely I, the LORD, do not change, nor do you cease to be sons of Jacob.

Let me ask you something, does God introducing a new covenant constitute “change”?
Has he ceased to be God? Has He forgotten about us? doesn’t He love us any more? Why should He stop talking to us now after the established pattern of so many centuries past?
The position you take is rather peculiar . . . you say that if He is not constantly communicating with us He must have ceased to be God, or He has forgotten about us, or He doesn’t love us anymore . . . what happen in the 1700 years between John dying and the “revelations” to Joseph Smith? Did He cease to be God in that time? Did He forget about us? Did He stop loving us then? Even if you believe the Book of Mormon to be true, you have to believe God did the previous three things for 1400 years; never before in history had God left that long and not communicated with us, so this argument basically amounts to not much.

And I’m sure you know I don’t consider these other revelations as valid . . . so do you care to show us where to Bible teaches your doctrine of continued revelation? Thank you! 🙂

Israel shall inherit the land in the resurrection—The stick of Judah (Bible) and the stick of Joseph (Book of Mormon) become one in the Lord’s hand—Israel shall be gathered and cleansed—The Messiah shall reign over them—They shall receive the everlasting gospel covenant.

16 Moreover, thou son of man, take thee one stick, and write upon it, For Judah, and for the children of Israel his companions: then take another stick, and write upon it, For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and for all the house of Israel his companions:
17 And join them one to another into one stick; and they shall become one in thine hand.

19 Say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I will take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel his fellows, and will put them with him, even with the stick of Judah, and make them one stick, and they shall be one in mine hand.
20 ¶ And the sticks whereon thou writest shall be in thine hand before their eyes.
