Then please comment on the quote I gave from Jeremiah.
God himself promised that the priesthood would never be loosed:
Steven, This scripture relates to the Davidic Covenant found in 2 Samuel wherin the Lord says, “Thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established forever” (2 Samuel 7:16). The covenant promises that kingship will remain with David and his seed forever and ultimately that the Messiah (Branch of righteousness) will come through David’s lineage.
In this specific scripture the Lord promises:
- David and his seed will remain on the throne of Israel.
- Priests and Levites will always have a man to offer burnt offering before the Lord.
The Lord then promises that he will never break this covenant with David.
While the Lord will never break a covenant, the people may. In this case they clearly did. For although the promise was that the seed of David would always rule Israel, in 587 BC King Zedekiah, the last of the Davidic kings, ceased to rule when his eyes were put out and he was carried captive into Babylon. From that day to the present a king from the lineage of David has never ruled in Israel. Additionally after the Messiah came the priesthood was removed from the earth.
However this prophecy will yet be fulfilled in the last days when an heir of David shall again rule and the sons of Levi offer again an offering in righteousness unto the Lord.
