This has always been a struggle for me. I want to live the gospel values out, caring for others and wanting to put others first. Yet at the same time it seems I struggle with having a basic healthy selfishness. I feel like I don’t know what I’m doing. I can’t tell the difference between things I need and things I want. I can’t trust anyone to tell me what I actually need, because it seems like I’ve gotten bad advice so many times. I feel like I have to be horribly selfish and demanding just to survive, especially with mental health problems that spill over into the physical realm. And with depression and anxiety it seems so often that I have no knowledge of my own capabilities. I’m on welfare, I feel like I’m lazy not working and using other people’s money, but I also am not sure if I can work or if it would be a good idea long-term even if I could.
I just don’t feel like I know what I’m doing anymore. I feel like I have to be selfish and bad just to take care of myself. I’m constantly second-guessing everything, did I really need that, could I have done just a bit more for others, am I just being selfish and taking things I don’t really need.
How do you find balance when it seems like what you have to do to survive is what you’ve always been taught is wrong?
