Now THAT was a well written character!
Zhaan was amazing, so complicated. I think that’s why Jool stood out - all the characters were deeply unpleasant people as well. All had massive character and personality flaws, in one way or another. With the exceptions of John and Pilot, I don’t think any of them would be considered a “nice person” by random people they encountered. And John was a drama queen and Pilot defined passive-aggression.
And yet they were also
wonderful people at the same time, when you knew them. Even D’Argo
So richly layered and
real, with so many facets to their personalities.
Except for Jool. It never seemed like she made it past the intial stage, never more to her. Plus, I hated her look. The outfits, hair, the stupid screaming. Her abs were killer though.
My favorite Sikozu ep was the very next one, “Prayer”
I agree, those are marvelous scenes. I cry every time - the looks on John and Starkozu’s faces are gutwrenching. I watched
Prayer a few days ago, since I found out that the same actor was used for Jennick and Lechna. How brilliantly perverse. I also love the choice of blended characters on Bizarro Moya - so not random.
Raelee Hill was an excellent find. The “everything lives and everything dies” speech is delivered with such strength and conviction, while at the same time you can tell she is terrified of John - but she will say what he needs to hear, even if it means he shoots her. And Ben Browder does some of his best acting in that scene as well. It’s so
raw. Another thing Farscape excells at - the visceral emotions. They aren’t afraid to be ugly when they cry, or die, there is snot and slobber and everything you won’t see elsewhere because it isn’t pretty.
To see how the character grew from a very young, immature Luxan with virtually no self-control into a “man” of self-mastery and ultimately self-sacrifice was a very rare TV experience.
I agree that he did grow - I just wish he had honestly looked at his relationship with Chiana. I never felt like he wanted to acknowledge what really happened and since Chi is my favorite character (tied with John, though I don’t ship them) it was hard for me to forgive him. It frustrated me to no end that when he tried to shoulder some of the blame, it was for the wrong reasons! Chiana didn’t sleep with Jothee (a hideous little troll, another one for the hate list) because D’Argo wasn’t paying attention to her.
Chiana slept with Jothee because she was panicking at the thought of D’Argo’s increasing control over her - assuming she’d go live on a farm, assuming she’d marry him - if you watch the eps closely, he never proposes, and does not know she saw the DRD recording. One scene John’s telling him she could say no, which D’Argo dismisses outright, the next D’Argo discovers her and Jothee.
He never asked her to marry him. And yet for the rest of the series, he refers to her as his fiancee who slept with his son. She had no problem with him looking for his son - she did everything she could to find Jothee too! She pulled away from D’Argo because he began treating her harshly. He was becoming someone different than the noble man who treated her with respect, honor, tenderness.
Chiana was
absolutely wrong to sleep with Jothee, but I understand why she did it - D’Argo wouldn’t take no for an answer, unless she did something unforgiveable. I think Chi and D’Argo were in love with an idealized version of the other that didn’t really exist, and in D’Argo’s case, in love with the idea of love. I don’t think it ever stood a chance of working out, and was upset by their reunion, even though I was liking D’Argo by that point.
While I enjoyed the Peacekeeper Wars, I would have LOVED to see the whole series play out to its natural conclusion
We’ll have to disgree again - I LOATHED the PKW for endless reasons (bad script, rushed, incomprehensible characterization for Aeryn regarding the baby - watch Prayer and then PKW where she confesses to Stark that she hopes she someday wants the baby for a reason other than John wanting it - and Chiana, who delivered Talyn, who would do anything for John and who loves Aeryn as well, who has never been “squicked” by ANYTHING, balking at helping deliver the baby
I keep toying with the idea of writing out season 5 in fanfic. I’d rewrite the end of 4 slightly, go with the baby being successfully transferred from Aeryn to Chiana temporarily, have Scorpius trapped on earth, alone, after the wormhole popped. Harvey could stick around. Deal with Rygel’s return to power, the Nebari taking advantage of the Scarran/PK threat to unleash the contagion, and figure out what the heck is up with Noranti.

One thing I’m trying to do while rewatching Farscape again, is to see D’Argo with more objective eyes, and say something nice about him every episode. Sometimes it’s as simple as ‘he didn’t yell for as long as I expected’, but other times I have a whole list
