Greetings!
I’ve been practicing Wicca/Goddess Spirituality and using Tarot and astrology for the past few years. I won’t go into a lot of specifics but only to stay that I’ve been very active in that community.
However, I have decided to return to the Church. I’m not sure why. I just feel a pull. It’s like I feel that I need to choose good over evil, if that makes any sense. And it’s strange because I always thought I was a good person. But it seems like you only ever hear about the Catholics or Christians doing good out in the world, never Muslims or Buddhists or Wiccans.
Now I’m wondering what I should do. I want to order a bible from amazon but I’m not sure which one, there are so so many? What’s The Little Rock Bible??!! The RSV Ignatius? Should I talk to a priest before I go back?
Lastly, I was wondering if anyone can recommend any good books for people either returning to the faith? Are there any good websites I can use?
Believe me, any help would be so gratefully appreciated.
Thank you so much!!
Jen

Awesome! I’d recommend you speak to the pastor at your local parish who can best advise you on how to resume practicing 🙂

I recommend the New American Bible. This Catholic Answers tract will likely help you.

Should I talk to a priest before I go back?
Yes, you should 🙂 find a parish near you

Catholicscomehome.org is great

Welcome back home. A good beginning as well as what you’ve suggested is to start attending mass too, just go and listen until you feel ready to go to confession and take part, that is assuming you are able as you did say return to the church. A priest can guide you on that. Be comforted by the fact that many people wander away from the church and return again so you will not be the only one the priest has seen. God bless you.

Congratulations on finding your new path. I recommend a book called ‘Mere Christianity’ by C.S. Lewis. It will help you understand why Christ’s atonement is necessary and it will speak to your spiritual heart.

If I were buying a Bible today it would be the Great Adventure Study Bible.

“Little Rock Scripture Study” is simply another sort of Study Bible. I know one of the contributors, it is fine, but GA is better 🙂

Yes, I’d make an appointment with your pastor and have a nice visit, lunch maybe?

If your parish offers Formed.org, set up an account today (it will be on their website likely). If not, it costs about the same as a Netflix or other VOD service.

For reading? Strange Notions blog, anything by Peter Kreeft or Frank Sheed is good.

On the other hand, I was very disappointed in the Didache Bible. I’d not buy it again.

Welcome home! The pull is no coincidence. 😉 As others have said, please speak to a Catholic priest! I use a NABRE Bible. Make sure the Bible is Catholic, because it has more books than the Protestant Bible.

I used to dabble in Paganism in my teens. Looking back on it now I see that there was a part of me that longed for something “ritualistic”. There was a void in me that I was trying to fill with the empty rituals of witchcraft. Yet something about Protestant denominations seemed empty as well. I found the fullness of faith and ritual in Catholicism.

This makes sense. We yearn for ritual and mysticism. I dabbled in New Age and Eastern religion trying to satisfy that call in my heart, but all of those ideas and practices left me empty, no matter how hard I tried to embrace them. Catholicism makes sense intellectually, ontologically, spiritually and fulfills our desire for ritual, mysticism, history and culture. That longing was put there by God.

The most important thing is to go to Confession. Call a local parish and set an appointment with the priest.

Tell him you’d like to confess, you’ve been away for a long time and became involved in pantheism.

If he doesn’t give you a Bible, PM me and I will send one to you.

Welcome back to where you belong,
Deacon Christopher

I second all of that. Morning and Evening prayer too, if you have time. DivinumOfficium.com is a great site for that. I use Celtiic Daily Prayer too, if pressed for time because it’s short and I almost have the Midday Prayer memorized (basically Catholic prayer with more attention to the Irish saints). And the Angelus at noon and bedtime!

Confession. You will have opened the door to the enemy. Ask the Priest for help to close it.

Thank you for all the kind words and suggestions! I have made a folder and saved the websites suggested. I’m excited to tour all of them.😊
Right now I am looking at bibles you have all suggested. So I think instead of ordering one off of amazon, I will go to the Catholic bookstore in my area and look at them for myself. Jeff Cavins Great Adventures Bible is very elusive, hard to get so that one might be out.
I will call my Parish this week and explain my situation to them (oh goodness, that’ll be so embarrassing) and see what they suggest. I’m actually really excited now after reading all these replies. Thank you so much for all the positivity and encouragement!
Also, I know I’ve got some dark energy around me and I want to get rid of that…I think maybe I should get some holy water and sprinkle it around my house?! I don’t know. All I know is that part of my decision to get back to the Church and quickly was because I needed to be safe from this dark stuff.
Anyway, thank you again!!! So so much appreciated!!

As other have said, welcome home! It sounds as though you might already have enough Bible recommendations but I’ll still add my two cents 😎

If you like modern English, I’d recommend the Ignatius RSV - a very solid translation.

If the lilt and cadence of Elizabethan English doesn’t distract you or put you off, the Douay Rheims version really is worth a look. It has a majesty all its own. Baronius Press has some lovely editions.

I would strongly urge you to get rid of any wiccan items that might be around your home - they are tools of an enemy who is, alas, very real. Holy water is an excellent idea! You might also ask your priest is he could come round and bless your home - homes can “acquire strange vibes” after being used for some of these things - it’s a lovely thing to do for all of us, and a chance to get to better know your priest at the same time!

Oh, and go to confession! You won’t believe how good it will make you feel. 😀

May God bless you in your path, dear sister, as he leads you back into his loving harms. Praying for you!

Others are better at discussing holy water and such for the “dark” around you, and the best course of action is of course to talk to your priest, but you may want to say a prayer to Saint Michael for protection in the meantime.

St. Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do thou,
O Prince of the heavenly hosts,
by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan,
and all the evil spirits,
who prowl about the world
seeking the ruin of souls. Amen…

Also, don’t be embarrassed about contacting the church. They’ll be thinking well of you for coming home rather than poorly of you for where you’ve been.

Welcome home.

When you talk to your pastor, ask him over to bless your house.

Get your house blessed by a Priest and be guided by him.
And get your new Bible blessed.
You are in my prayers
