In highschool in the 1980’s I volunteered in a handicapped P.E. class. Out of the 17 students in there ranging from celbral palsey to downs syndrome, only two were right handed. The two right handers had been injured after birth. I have always wondered if that is part of the prejudice that people used to have against lefties?
I really think it has to do with the Middle Ages and that people who were lefty were evil

We had the sisters of Notre Dame … great ladies … just some of them thought that lefty = evil!
Now they probably smack the righties! Rightwing=evil! 😉

Yeah, but were they evil because they were left-handed or because they were born left-handed and with a birth defect showing God’s displeasure with them? And looking for left handedness just became another way to find people with the “hidden” defects.

I know that my personal experience might be a statistical anomaly, but still, 15 lefties out of 15 birth defects. Have there ever been any studies on birth defects and left handness?

BTW, my dad is a forced rightie, my husband and son a leftie, and I and another son are both. I am not saying left handedness is a birth defect, but how often are those who do have birth defects left handed?

Sorry, ignore my posts. I should start a new thread and not highjack yours! I just was caught by the title, and as my husband can attest, I tend to just jump to the next thought that comes to my mind!

I am left handed and my twin brother is right handed…go figure! (for twins, we are NOT identical, in many respects).

I never had my hand smacked with a ruler by a nun in grade schoold (1968-1975), However I hated writing with those Laddie thick pencils and your underside of the left pinky had more lead on it than what was in the pencil!

go with God!

P.S. However something happened…I throw right handed, what a disgrace :o

Not a problem!

A true-blue lefty, here. I do everything left handed, and always have. I did not attend Catholic schools growing up, so I don’t have any experience in that regard. I do vividly remember being in the 1st grade in public school and learning to write. My teacher never tried to make me write right-handed, but she did not know how to teach a left to write, either. The gist of my “instruction” was to watch what everyone else was doing and just do it in reverse! LOL! She tried to help, but she really did not know the mechanics of left-handedness, I suppose. I essentially ended up teaching myself penmanship. I practiced long and hard, and I must say I have beautiful handwriting. People are often shocked to realize that I am left-handed because I don’t have the typical lefty “scrawl”. I guess I look at penmanship as an art form, and as with all my artistic endeavors, I want it to be as beautiful as I can make it.

Have a great day!

Good for you Judy … my handwriting is horrible … I think it has to do with the ruler hitting

Both my husband and I are lefties. Also, in my family, my sister and I are lefties, but our 5 brothers are all right- handed. Just kind a weird fact. My daughter is too young to be able to determine her “hand” (14 months).

I never had any problems with teachers, but I do hate that I smear everything as I write.

My mother is Catholic and she is left handed, growing up going to a Catholic school in the 50’s the nuns would tie her left hand behind her back and try to make her use her right hand, yikes, her dad finally came in and said “no disrespect sister but I don’t want my daughter put through this anymore, God gave her the ability to write with her left hand and that is that” my mom has the most beautiful handwriting I have ever seen. 😃

   JUST LIKE MY MOM DID IN THE LATE 60’S

Anyone out there left handed? And did you attend parochial schools and get hit on the hand with a ruler for being lefty?

Back in the early 70’s, I used to get hit in parochial school. I got bruised one time (i bruise easily) my mother had to finally go down and tell Sister … I wasn’t going to change my writing hand and PLEASE stop hitting me

One of my sons is lefthanded and my father-in-law tried to make him use his right hand.

He’s since seen the light.

Lefthandedness is a sign of true genius. (A mother’s unbiased opinion.)

My paternal grandfather was left handed…so was my oldest brother…my younger brother’s oldest daughter and my oldest son is almost but not quite an ambie. I have no idea why its always the oldest! (Must ask my niece if her firstborn daughter is a lefty!)

My son is the type who can be playing a guitar and flip and it play it upside down without missing a note. He throws with his left hand for accuracy and his right for distance. He is also right eye dominant.

One thing is kind of funny…it took him forever to learn to tie his shoe laces. It didn’t dawn on me that we were teaching him the right handed technique…we got his left handed cousin to show him how to do it the lefty way…he picked up it immediately. 🙂

Hehe, I’m more or less righthanded, except for how I tie my shoes. My older sister is lefthanded and she taught me how, so I’ve always done it the lefthanded way 😛

Left-handed and proud of it!

I was spared the rod. It was already becoming more acceptable for those going to school in the late 70’s early 80’s.

If the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body, does that mean that lefties are the only ones in their right minds? 🙂 BTW, I am a rightie, and my dh is a leftie.

Peace,
Linda
