I’m left handed, but luckily I’m young enough that I wasn’t born in the times when the left hand was viewed as the evil hand (I was born in the early 80’s). 🙂

However, I do know that from the earliest times the left hand was considered the “sinister” or evil hand. Why? I’m really not sure, other than maybe because left handers where and still are rare as opposed the the population as a whole. If somebody knows of another historical/theological reason, fill me in. I’d love to know if there was ever any reasonable thinking behind the thought of the left hand being evil.

LEFTIES will not be LEFT BEHIND (kidding … just thought of it!)

Peace be with you All,

I am a lefty and have never experienced any negative connotations regarding my left-hand use but I grew up Baptist not Catholic.

Peace, Love and Blessings,

Hi Lefties!
Ugh, the teacher in first grade never tired to switch me, but she was very particular on how to hold a pencil.
There was hardly ever left handed scissors so nowadays I cut better right handed.

I’ve always had this fantasy: Just for 1 day all of the righties trying to function in a left-handed world! Wouldn’t that be a HOOT!

Left on! 👍

BTW, if I do the sign of the cross forehead-chest-right shoulder-leftshoulder am I crossing myself like a lefty?

I am left-handed and went to Catholic school in the late 70s in Minnesota. I was never encouraged to write with my right hand, and they even had left-handed scissors for me. But another friend of mine from Texas who is the same age was forced to change and still writes right-handed today.

No, but it makes you Orthodox. 😉

My step-dad is left handed. he told me all kinds of stories about school and what they would do…he was born in the 30’s. i can’t remember them but some were bad. His writing is awful but mostly because his hand drags across the wet ink and smudges it!!

Welcome Home!

Grew up going to public school in Texas in the 70’s.

Don’t remember anyone ever giving me grief for being a lefty. I just know I had to learn to use scissors with my right hand.

Weird thing is I do things that require manuel dexterity (write, eat, shave, …) lefty. I do things that require more mass muscle coordination (throw, golf, …) righty. I play guitar righty (fingering chord with my left hand). I can bat from either side. I shoot righty but that is becuase I am right eyed dominate. I also favor my right leg in soccer. So I guess I’m partly abidextrous, but most of the the things I can do lefty I can’t do righty and vice-versa.

My dad is a righty, but his handwriting is so bad I wonder if he really is a lefty.

Not that my handwriting is good.

Another lefty here and I went to Catholic schools from 1965,
nobody ever made a problem out of it.

I do am creative and found lot of my creative friends
lefthanded. Coincedence?

I’m a lefty who grew up in public schools in the '40s and '50s. I wasn’t forced to change to my right hand - just taught to write Palmer method with my left hand. I now have beautiful hand-writing that you would swear was done by a righty.

Now for a little whining about the plight of lefties - the world is still not set up for us in any way. There is never a measuring cup made for us, nor a keyboard - not without special order - nor a thousand other things. We’re still too much of a minority.

But, has anyone ever noticed that lefties are usually smarter than other folks???

I’m completely left-handed too. I do everything lefty, and I’m lucky to be growing up in a time where that’s still somewhat acceptable 😛

Actually, I remeber reading an article, but can’t recall where, that said lefties were over represented at both the top and bottom of IQ tests. BTW, I am a lefty and no, they did not try to change me in Catholic, and no, they did not try to change me in Catholic school (70s-80s).

Yikes

When I first read the title of this thread…I thought you were talking about Episcopalians 😃

Or were they called back handed catholics 😃

We just need to form a corporation that will make these items, if no one else will. That would be unique.

go with God!

I’m a left handed Catholic. I did three years in a Catholic school, but I was not forced to use my right hand, I just had to turn my hand so that my writing slanted the “right” way.

Most things I do left handed, but there are exceptions. I throw a football left handed, but I throw a baseball right handed since the gloves we had growing up were on my left hand.

It’s definitely a right handed person’s world, but I don’t feel discriminated against. Just the way things are. I deal with it.

My wife is also left handed. Fortunately for my kids, they’re all right handed.
