I’m signed up as a Legion of Mary Auxiliary (have been for nearly two years) and I am supposed to pray the rosary for the work of the Legion and the active members every day, as well as the rest of the Tessera (Legion prayers). In my years of being an auxiliary member, I have not managed to do this. I have trouble saying the rosary (can’t really meditate, takes me a long time to get through the 5 decades…): in all this time, I believe I have said it once for the Legion-- maybe twice --and that one time was because I was at the Acies and it was being prayed by the whole group. When I first changed from being an active member to an auxiliary member, I did not realize my duty was to say the rosary; I simply thought we were to say the catena every day.

Now, I need to make a choice: call the Legion and tell them I cannot continue being an auxiliary, or continue and try to pray one decade a day. I cannot be unreasonable and think that I will pray an entire rosary a day, but perhaps I can manage one decade. But do you think this last choice is really fair to the Legion? Is it acceptable, even? Would it be better to stop pretending and just call it quits?

I am sure you will have time to complete a whole rosary. Here is what I do daily -
  • My daily praying the rosary starts at a parking lot - 😃
  • walking from the parking lot to my workplace building: complete almost 1st mystery.
  • walking from my office to church for mass at noon and back to office: finished 2nd mystery and 3rd mystery.
  • lunch time: walking from my office to dining room and waiting to heat up my food: complete 4th mystery
  • leaving work: walking from office to parking lot: finish the 5th mystery.
You can pray any time anywhere. It helps you think of the Lord throughout your day.

Try that and you will find no problem in finishing a rosary per day.

Please, you don’t understand. I really can’t do a whole one. I can’t even do what you do. It really is unreasonable for me to think I will pray an entire rosary a day; trust me, I will not do it. 😦

I am a Legion of Mary Auxilliary myself. So, is there some way you can ask to be removed? I don’t think it is binding under sin, just something we want to do if we can

I pray the TESSARA daily myself, with the time at work spent in walking from parking lot to time clock to work station. My work hours at the Post Office are 3 PM to 11:30 PM. I finish off the TESSARA at my 1st coffee break (at 5 PM). Lunch is spent on spiritual reading. I do the Divine Mercy chaplet walking from work station to time clock. And walking to the car is a string of OFs to atone for slips of the tongue.

Yes, I think if I call and ask they would remove me from auxiliaries list. When I was an active member, I remember it being mentioned in meetings that so and so couldn’t be an auxiliary anymore. Do you think that is what I should do? Maybe I could do that, but still do a decade a day and pray for the Legion “unofficially”?

It’s wonderful that you can pray those things throughout your day. Keep at it, it’s a blessing in itself! 👍

Unfortunately for me, I don’t think it’s just a matter of not finding the time but of my brain having trouble with the meditation inherent in the rosary… Let’s say it is September, and school is back in session; I could not pray it on the bus, I could not pray it in the 10 mins or so it would take to get to class, I could not pray it on the way back home, both because trying to meditate would take up all my attention and it would take an hour or so, and also because, being in public, it would gather attention and I don’t want to look “holier-than-thou” or whatever. 😊

So I really think the question comes down to whether I should quit the Legion or not.

Try praying the Tessera Prayers and the Rosary with some event. For example, when driving or while taking a showers.

I noticed something here. The continued use of the word can’t.

It isn’t that you can’t do it. It is that it is hard for you to do and maybe something that you do not wish to fight though doing.

If you do it, it will get easier. I have found this out myself.

The thing is doing it.

You do not have to do this though and if you do not wish to do it then I think the right thing to do would be to stop being an auxiliary, but that should have happened sometime ago.

Thanks, ByzCath. You’ve pushed me to do it. I called and told them.

Well, at least that’s done.

I really shouldnt post, but here goes. I looked up “The Legion of Mary” and Tessara.
What a great organization!
Quote:
The Legion of Mary is the largest Apostolic organization of
laity in the Catholic Church, with over 6 million members.

Active members strive to visit the sick, lonely, the old, in the hospitals or in their own homes; visit lapsed Catholics who want to return but are afraid of taking that step; visit every house in the Parish in the hope of bringing Christ’s message to everyone.

This really touched my heart.
