The founder of the Legionaries of Christ passed away recently and I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts about the Vatican’s decision to invite the founder to a life of private prayer (due to allegations of sexual abuse).
I have always been impressed with the seminary formation of the Legionaries. The Legion did not change there seminary formation at all after the second Vatican Council. While almost every other order did just that–(other than the mass of course—shhh)
Does anyone have opinions on whether the Vatican’s decision implies guilt??
Does anyone have strong opinions either way?🙂

The Vatican invited Maciel to a “reserved life of prayer and penance, renouncing all public ministry.” They took into account his advanced age and ill health. I think the decision did make him look guilty. I have done quite a bit of research on the Legionaries and I, personally, would not get involved with them.

I would kind of like to keep the thread on the vatican ruling, but what is your problem with the Legion? The Holy Father seems to be (as well as John Paul II) vehemently behind them…Their formation seems to be as traditional as anyone’s.

There are some people who would describe the Legion as cult-like. I’ve read several stories of former members and what I read was enough for me. RegainNetwork (online) has a lot of info. While I know some would say that there’s always the possibility of some disgruntled former members with any organization, what I read was disturbing.
And, while it is wonderful that they are ordaining so many priests, we need parish priests. The Legion does not provide parishes with priests.
I am familiar with the fact that they seem to have Vatican support. Pope Benedict did, however, abolish their private vows - members were not allowed to criticize their superiors in any way (and that included Maciel).
