Any baptized Christian may offer a blessing; anointing with oil is but one form of blessing.

The Roman Emperors had no blessing from the Church, they were in fact pagan rulers. Yet, we are told to obey the just authority of the rulers of countries. The early Christians did so, eve to the point of martyrdom, which was unjust.

“Be ye subject, therefore, to every human creature for God’s sake; whether it be to the king as excelling, or to governors as sent by him.” I Peter 2:13
From Constantine the Great onwards they weren’t pagan.

I’ve been asked by Americans on ore than one occasion, “Have you met the Queen?” No, of course not - she doesn’t meet people, except in a completely stage-managed way. It’s not like she pops down to her local Tescos to do the shopping!
I can’t believe anybody would be so idiotic as to ask you this; that’s like asking me if I’ve met Neil Armstrong!

To a point it is for show,
Indeed, to a point it is, and, as you say, nothing wrong with a show of tradition and patriotism. But I think our understanding is that for the Queen it was not just show. That the promises she made before her God were real promises, and that she believes the ceremony conferred on her real responsibilities.
I meant the pomp and circumstance. :woman_facepalming:t3:

The queen would have ascended the Throne without the grandeur of a Coronation, which was the statement my post responded to - that even without all the finery, she still would have received the throne. Just like her non-coronated uncle was STILL King Edward VIII.

🤣 Everything’s in London, didn’t you know? People in the rest of the country are still covered in woad (particularly us in the North).

You’re Irish, aren’t you? I always think Irish accents are easy to understand. I live very near Liverpool, they’d struggle with the Scouse accent.

I can’t imagine how many silly mistakes I made when we lived in California (despite most of my relatives living nearby who helped deal with my incomprehension).

The best stories are about dealing with Americans (or Brits who are equally bad) are when you’re in a country where you speak the language and they don’t.

Well, there you go.

I, my wife/sister/BIL and daughter met Bob Dole, while we were walking in the area around the WWII memorial on the Mall in DC. Had a nice chat. And got a pic.

Outside of that, most famous folk I’ve met are SF writers or comic professionals.

I’ve never met the Queen. Any Queen.

I must remember to ask my sister what circumstances she “met” the Queen under. I do think she got to do a little curtsy. But it was all long ago.
