Jon , the vast majority of the refugees are in fact , refugees , fleeing suffering, death , rape etc , not jihadists, no they wouldn’t go to near by lands , because western lands are better able to help them.
But Jon’s first sentence is right on target that we shouldn’t have to dilute our Christian identity and Culture to help those in need. I find it very troubling that these churches feel they have to dilute their message and identity to help those in need.
As I said, it sends the wrong message at the very least.
And it tells secular humanists" go ahead and mow over us we’ll bend to whatever you want"
What about the Catholic churches and missions that have helped the poor while displaying the beautiful crucifixes and art they have in their churches?
Jon is absolutely right we shouldn’t have to give up our culture, traditions and art to help the suffering and those in need.

I wasn’t disagreeing with him on that point , just his other point .

Keep the faith Vanny , Starwars 🙂

This bishop seems like a deeply disturbed and confused individual.

The wealth of the oil-rich gulf states, etc., speaks differently. But more importantly, the fact that the vast majority are not themselves complicit in a Hijrah doesn’t make it any less one.

While the wealth of the guld states does indeed make them well prepared to help, it does fall on Christians to do so. We are called to do so, but we need to do so with our eyes wide open, clear that we are “people of the book”, followers of Messiah, the second person of the Trinity.

Jon

Well if you live long enough you will probably see it all! Yuk.

A Hijra is an intentional invasion, a refugee crisis is people fleeing for their lives , this falls in the latter , but I agree with you that we should give the gospel and help them with their urgent needs .

I don’t know if she’s confused and disturbed. Probably more likely she’s just far too zealous and accommodating in her desire to help the incoming refugee wave. I mean the base idea of helping a displaced people feel welcome in a land far from the home they’ve been forced to flee (because it is being systematically destroyed by one of the most evil organizations to mar the face of the Earth in ISIL) is not a bad one. The error was more in the execution than the base intent.

“Lift High the Cross, the love of Christ proclaim…”

The lady would have us change it to
“Tear down the cross, the love of Christ obscure”
Exactly!

Re: Lesbian bishop: 'Remove crosses from church’

Never!

Bishop Eva Brunne of Sweden made headlines when she was ordained a bishop in 2009. Installed as the bishop of the Diocese of Stockholm, she was the first lesbian to be elevated to such a post in a mainstream church. Brunne is in a same-sex partnership with another ordained cleric, and is reported to be “a vocal opponent of racism and xenophobia.”

She also has an interesting view of the role and purpose of the church. Christianity has typically seen it as the point of the church to teach the message of Jesus Christ and worship him as savior. Thus, the iconic symbol of Jesus — the cross — is always prominently displayed in a church building.

But Bishop Brunne reportedly wants to change that at the Seamen’s Church in Stockholm. She wants to remove the crosses from the church and provide direction markings for Mecca, to assist Muslims in praying there.

I can see why she would remove a physical reminder of Christ. I can’t imagine any Christian would enter into that building to pray or worship. I can’t even imagine any Muslims even praying there.

Just another thing in the news I came across.

I view her removing the crosses from the building to be totally appropriate and the symbolism is right on. I doubt any Christian or Muslim would pray there. I will pray for her to repent and return to the gospel of Christ.

An interesting POV. One to ponder.

Maybe we should hope she removed all copies of the Augsburg Confession and Small Catechism, as well.

Hopefully she would keep and read those things to reminder her of the gospel and repent.

The Bishops sexual orientation is beside the point here and …
Her sexual orientation is besides the point. That is not her choice. The title of the thread is unfortunate.

But her actions are not beside the point. If she chooses to maintain a relationship that is not compatible with Christianity, and publicly defends the right for her, or anyone, to do that, that calls into question at least her prudence and credibility, and probably more serious concerns. If she is willing to publicly influence others towards what could be for them sinful behavior in one part of her life, how can you trust her Christian insight and counsel in another part of her life?

We can’t judge her, personally, as to whether she is good or bad. We can judge her public role, as credible or not.

To add my five cents:

Eastern Orthodox hold the belief that once you attempt to “ordain women”, you are no longer Christian in the first place. There is a difference in how we see, say, Uniate Catholics or Traditional Anglican Communion, i.e. Christians misunderstanding Orthodoxy, and how we see all the sects ordaining women and offering “divine blessing” to gay couples, or outright claiming they perform/assist at the sacrament of marriage (i.e. claim the Holy Spirit descends upon the same-sex couple as He would upon a couple of a man and a woman).

These are all non-Christians by definition. That is why we are not so much concerned with all these news like “a lesbian bishop suggests removing crosses from churches” or “methodist female bishops parading in a pro-choice procession fighting for the right of every woman to choose whether or not to undergo abortion”. See, the Enemy is very powerful and very cunning, really very smart, he has had thousands of years of experience in this world, and he simply tempts and seduces and twists. This is the result. I am quite sure everyone who starts praying, say, two hours a day in contemplative prayer, surrounded by icons and incense, will very quickly arrive at the vision that these things are non-Christian.

Though, I am hopeful! I pray daily for all the misguided souls to see the truth. I pray daily, with my head bowed down, that Archangel Michael protects all unborn babies and keep them safe with his powerfull wings. In humility I daily ask the Most Holy Theotokos that people find more thankfulness in them for the gift of life, that they appreciate the fact they are only around out of the will of the Holy Spirit, who alone is the Lifegiver.

May the peace of Our Lord be with you, dear brothers and sisters.

Interesting observation. There is so much to admire in the EO church. I plan to attend a Divine Liturgy someday when I get the chance.
I left the ELCA in 1991 for the very reasons you mention above.

Oh, please do. I most cordially invite all who ever plan on visiting Prague, to message me, I shall be most happy to have you. When you experience that, the chants, the icons, the incense, the peace, and, honestly, love and friendship and caring, you will like it. Do that twice a week for a couple months and you will see how much it is changing you. You gain a sense of clarity and lightness. Believe me when I say the Divine Liturgy is a mystery an has powerful effect. --A bit off topic, sorry about that. But to take it back to track: try it out on your own, I dare you. Participate (I mean it, it is not “going there”, it is “participating in the Dicine Liturgy”) in Orthodox Divine Liturgy a few times in row, and you will develop a taste for it. Like many, I sing the whole liturgy (except readings, and believe me I would sing that too if I knew what tune to apply to it). Once you have developed the taste, news articles such as “lesbian bishops calling for removal of crosses from churches” will no longer bother you. After all, one of the many desired effects of everything the Enemy does is to bother Christians.

Do not wait up!

In brotherly love,

Why not, ( There is a little saying that if they take your tunic then Offer them your cloak as well, I`M NOT SURE HOW MANY WEAR TUNICS ANYMORE BUT AS A MODERN DAY scenario, on hindsight that is a not a bad opportunity the unconfirmed priestess has taken.
Be kind too those that mock you, Mmmmmm
