As I have posted numerous times, I have been struggling with unemployment. I have been trying hard to turn it over to God and trust His plan while doing what I can to secure a job. I have a 3 months contract that will be ending in 5 weeks. Part of me hopes to be kept on (which I don’t see happening) because it is a good company. The other part can’t wait for it to end because I just don’t know how to take my manager.

A client asked to have a report redone with a couple of changes. My boss sent me the email and asked me to do one of the changes. I ended up doing both. The whole time I was shaking in my boots. No matter how much she tells me to ask when I don’t understand, every time I ask a question she acts SO annoyed that I hate asking questions. I was petrified that if I only made one of the changes, my manager would get mad that I did not do both the changes the client asked for. If I made both changes, she would get mad that she only asked for one. So, I made both changes and it went over well.

Then, the client emailed us back with a few more changes they wanted that were not previously mentioned. My manager’s blood pressure seriously increased. I can’t help but take her personally. Just the way she acts makes me feel like she is taking it out on me.

Well, then, a customer whose report we changed 2 weeks ago did not like the changes. She told me to first look in the database and make sure the numbers matched what the client wanted before changing the report. So I looked in the system and the numbers did not balance. I figured out what happened and sent it to her in an email. My manager then came to my desk saying ‘We need to figure out what happened with the numbers’. As I was trying to explain, she was so busy snapping at me, she did not understand my explanations. She kept barking at me ‘Bring up this screen’. She could NOT for the world of her comprehend what happened with the numbers. She told me to start making a list of things. As she said that someone interrupted us to speak with her. After she finished talking to this person, she went back to her desk. I said ‘I finished the report would you like me to send it to you?’ To which she snapped ‘No, I don’t need it I know the numbers are right I want to know what the client is asking’

This woman makes absolutely no sense. I am convinced I am her punching bag. I just don’t know how to handle it. I have refrained from asserting myself because I want to be kept on and can’t help but think if I assert myself she will take it the wrong way.

I just don’t know what to do. This woman will never change and I don’t know what approach to take with her

Maybe your explanation wasn’t clear. Or maybe she’s bad with numbers. Or maybe she was to stressed to take it all in.

I know you’ve been worried about losing this job, but as you can see, there would definitely be a silver lining to moving on from this office. Not to be Pollyanish, but this is a win-win situation. Either they keep you (in which case you’ll have a job) or they’ll let you go (in which case you won’t have to deal with this anymore).

Best wishes!

Angie, I think many of us have had to deal with difficult supervisors, at the time it seems that they have such power over our feelings and stability, but “this too shall pass”, are true words. You have your health, you hopefully have a loving family and friends, you have God. Pray for inner peace, take a deep breath and try not to let her have such control over you. Believe me, one day you’ll look back and wonder why you let any of this bother you. Do the best job you can, stay positive, don’t react to her unprofessional behaviour. Even if you don’t get a permanent job now, you hopefully will receive a good recommendation at the end of this placement. I pray that God will give you peace and strength.

I think it is because not only is she too stressed, she is not in the mood to even think about it. And I agree, I am in a win-win situation which is why I am turning it over to God and wanting to do His will

Well, I think my trying to be humble actually worked today. I went in to the office and decided to not say a word about it. Today we finally got to the bottom of it. She was in a much better mood (still hard to be around but not as unbearable as yesterday). And FINALLY she told me how she wanted to handle it so I was able to actually do what she wanted

I suspect that if I had told her I felt bullied yesterday, it just would have put fuel on her fire
