In the Capitol basement yesterday, long-suffering House Democrats took a trip to the land of make-believe.

They pretended a small conference room was the Judiciary Committee hearing room, draping white linens over folding tables to make them look like witness tables and bringing in cardboard name tags and extra flags to make the whole thing look official.

Rep. John Conyers Jr., center, and other Democrats held a mock Judiciary Committee hearing as a protest against the war in Iraq.

Rep. John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.) banged a large wooden gavel and got the other lawmakers to call him “Mr. Chairman.” He liked that so much that he started calling himself “the chairman” and spouted other chairmanly phrases, such as “unanimous consent” and “without objection so ordered.” The dress-up game looked realistic enough on C-SPAN, so two dozen more Democrats came downstairs to play along.

The session was a mock impeachment inquiry over the Iraq war. As luck would have it, all four of the witnesses agreed that President Bush lied to the nation and was guilty of high crimes – and that a British memo on “fixed” intelligence that surfaced last month was the smoking gun equivalent to the Watergate tapes. Conyers was having so much fun that he ignored aides’ entreaties to end the session.

“At the next hearing,” he told his colleagues, “we could use a little subpoena power.” That brought the house down.

One can only hope the make believe turns into reality very soon.

The Democratic Party has accomplished only two things in the last 6 years:

Killing Terri Schaivo and sending Elian back to Cuba.

The party puts on these dog and pony shows to convince its base they are relevant.

They seek a victory over Bush, couldn’t win an election so they’d like to nullify the vote — even if it is pyrrhic — so far to the left, they’re falling off the map.

When John Conyers is your last hope, you are terminal.

Has he introduced his bill this year seeking reparations for slavery as he has done every year for over a decade?

Aren’t they so cute playing “congressman” and such? Maybe one day the liberals will all grow up and actually be real representatives and senators.

They say “practice makes perfect”…
😃

The Democratic Party (the party in general, certainly not all the well-intentioned voters who often side with it) is as shameless as it is immature.

This is what they get paid the big bucks for?
Ironically, I think we’d have a better Congress if we paid them more. The best, brightest, and most capable often don’t run because they dont’ want to take a huge paycut. 🙂

WHOA, did any of you see this?

*The session took an awkward turn when witness Ray McGovern, a former intelligence analyst, declared that the United States went to war in Iraq for oil, Israel and military bases craved by administration “neocons” so “the United States and Israel could dominate that part of the world.” He said that Israel should not be considered an ally and that Bush was doing the bidding of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. *

*“Israel is not allowed to be brought up in polite conversation,” McGovern said. “The last time I did this, the previous director of Central Intelligence called me anti-Semitic.” *

*Rep. James P. Moran Jr. (D-Va.), who prompted the question by wondering whether the true war motive was Iraq’s threat to Israel, thanked McGovern for his “candid answer.” *

*At Democratic headquarters, where an overflow crowd watched the hearing on television, activists handed out documents repeating two accusations — that an Israeli company had warning of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and that there was an “insider trading scam” on 9/11 — that previously has been used to suggest Israel was behind the attacks. *

Judge Greer is a conservative Republican.

Uniting a father and son is a good thing if you believe in maintaining families, even in undemocratic countries.

So what has the Democratic Party to do with those two?

You’re half right. He’s a Republican. I don’t consider him conservative (or liberal for that matter). I consider him a tyrant. Fortunately, his pastor had the good sense to kick him out of his church.

I don’t know enough about Elian to comment. I do know both sides have good points, but I’ll refrain from commenting on things I don’t know anything about.

You have a point. only dissenter was a Bill Clinton appointee. One of our biggest problems is our out of control judiciary.

If democratic judges vote wrong 95% of the time, and republican judges vote wrong 75% of the time, it’s hard to see how republican judges are the solution. It’s my hope (though I’m not too optimistic) that we can survive the fillibuster and appoint conservative judges (not just republican ones).

We’ll disagree on my last sentence. But good post, Richard.

It was Democrats who were pushing for her death in Congress, going so far as to tell the President he had no business interferring in a “family matter”. As if the killing of an innocent human being is merely a “family matter”.

Uniting a father and son is a good thing if you believe in maintaining families, even in undemocratic countries.

By using guns against an unarmed family trying to keep a young boy here where his mother gave her life to bring him. You seem to forget who ordered the raid on their home–Clinton.

So what has the Democratic Party to do with those two?

If you haven’t figured it out by now I truly pity you.

Wow, so the Democratic party now has enough power to hold mock trials, they are really starting to pick up speed…

If all they can do is whine and complain then they truly do represent the average American.
