Does anyone else ever run into the problem of lack of motivation to do anything? I have kept my spiritula life alive, I say my morning prayers, meditate, etc. but I don’t want to do any of it. It is not just in my spiritual life, it is also in my entire life. I don’t feel like eating, I normally love to read, but I lack the motivation, etc. Help!!!🤷

I think a lot of people have brief periods like this. But if it is prolonged, or interferes with normal functioning, I would recommend a visit to your doctor to rule out depression or a medical cause.

(Emphasis mine.)

I keep a quote by C.S. Lewis taped up on the inside of my door, which is part of the narrative of the Screwtape Letters. This is said by Screwtape, a demon, writing to his “nephew” who is in charge of tempting a human man:

“Our cause is never more in danger than when a human, no longer desiring, but still intending, to do the Enemy’s will, looks round upon a universe from which every trace of Him seems to have vanished, and asks why he has been forsaken, and still obeys.”

I think we all have some “dry spells”, when we don’t have the enthusiasm we used to have, or nothing seems to be moving along. Just keep up the prayers - often the “demotivation” is temporary. Don’t disregard the possibility of PhilotheaZ’s suggestion (visiting a doctor) if it gets too bad.

Speaking of reading (:)) sometimes when I find myself in a bout of emotional lethargy, I think of Bilbo in The Hobbit. Have you ever read it? At one point, Bilbo struggles through a dark wood (Mirkwood) that he believes can’t possibly have an end. Even climbing to the top of a tree and looking above the canopy gives him no hope. But, as the reader, you always know he’s almost there, and that if he keeps going like he always has, he’ll be free before he knows it. I try to distance myself and grasp at the “hope” of the reader. That maybe, even though I don’t know it, I’m closer to the sunlight than I think.

I’ll remember you in my prayers. God always knows where you are in *your *story.

I really would go see a doctor if I were you~:)

Hate to go see a doctor… costs my parents money! I do not have low iron levels (give blood regularly etc.). I am facing a few major changes in my life, which I know can be a cause of depression and I do have a couple of the symptoms. Is there any way to figure this out and fix it without going to a doctor?

I would agree with Philothea’s comment that it is normal every so often. There is a spiritual term for it, “acedia”–it is the “noonday demon” referred to in one of the Psalms, according to something-or-other I read once. Here is a really helpful article:

This happens to me when I don’t want to get up for Mass, I just walk right past the chapel even if I have time to go and pray, etc. The solution for me, in terms of Mass-going at least, is not to argue with myself, since I’m a pretty good arguer (“It’s so early!.. Maybe I’ll go to the later one… I need the sleep or I’ll be dead at work…”) but just to get up, mechanically; I know it’s the best thing. “Yes, yes, it’s early. I’m getting up now.”

Oh right, but if there is a GOOD chance of medical depression you’d better have it checked out, you don’t want to mess that up. I think.

blues,
If this will cost your parents money I am guessing you are young, so perhaps you should tell them how you are feeling. I am not a doctor so I am not in position to tell you how to fix it. However I do know about depression and you do sound like that maybe what you are suffering from.

If you are young and this is depression is could get worse. Do you have a mental health clinic near where you live you can go to?

I would underscore what others have written and suggest a visit to a doctor outlining your symptoms which do sound like depression, which is an illness asking treatment if it is prolonged. We all can have down day or a patch of depression due to something or other and these just pass. I’d advise seeing a doctor as well as praying specifically about it all and asking God’s help. Doctors are God’s Gift to us in times of illness.

Blessings - Barb:)

Or maybe speak to a counsellor or trusted teacher at school?

I know how you feel.Nothing in life interests you at that time. For me though, it happens when I take my eyes off God, and then everything goes wrong…Will pray for you.

Thank you all for your prayers. Funny thing, posted this yesterday, prayed more specifically about it, and something occured to me… I have been neglecting my multi-vitamin for about the period of the lethargy. Started taking it again immediately (and put it somewhere so that I can’t forget to take it again) and I already feel a lot better. :o We’ll see if it lasts!!! Thank you so much, everyone!!! I am also going to go to confession today and really focus on re-firing my spiritual life!

Sounds good to me! God’s Blessings…
May The Lord keep you close.

Interesting that the effect was that instantaneous.

Maybe get blood tests for levels of B-vitamins (often associated with energy) and various minerals. That way you’d know exactly what the culprit is.
