I have kept my spiritual life alive, I say my morning prayers, meditate, etc. but I don’t **want **to do any of it.
(Emphasis mine.)
I keep a quote by C.S. Lewis taped up on the inside of my door, which is part of the narrative of the
Screwtape Letters. This is said by Screwtape, a demon, writing to his “nephew” who is in charge of tempting a human man:
“Our cause is never more in danger than when a human, no longer desiring, but still intending, to do the Enemy’s will, looks round upon a universe from which every trace of Him seems to have vanished, and asks why he has been forsaken, and still obeys.”
I think we all have some “dry spells”, when we don’t have the enthusiasm we used to have, or nothing seems to be moving along. Just keep up the prayers - often the “demotivation” is temporary. Don’t disregard the possibility of PhilotheaZ’s suggestion (visiting a doctor) if it gets too bad.
Speaking of reading

)) sometimes when I find myself in a bout of emotional lethargy, I think of Bilbo in
The Hobbit. Have you ever read it? At one point, Bilbo struggles through a dark wood (Mirkwood) that he believes can’t possibly have an end. Even climbing to the top of a tree and looking above the canopy gives him no hope. But, as the reader, you always know he’s
almost there, and that if he keeps going like he always has, he’ll be free before he knows it. I try to distance myself and grasp at the “hope” of the reader. That maybe, even though I don’t know it, I’m closer to the sunlight than I think.
I’ll remember you in my prayers. God always knows where you are in *your *story.
