I try to look at what people do and not what they say. Fr. Jenkins is giving and honorary degree to someone that is opposed to the sanctity of life.
“How foolish and vain is the passion of this old man, who dishonors his age and his priesthood for an ephemeral title, and a power which will pass away from him! What an abominable crime to reopen by a schism the wound in our Saviour’s side, whence flowed that blood and water which united all nations in one faith. Can any man divide them without becoming an enemy of His cross, and the accomplice of His death? O fierce passion! I have already said it, and he does not deny that he had the impudence to endeavor to obtain the object of his ambition … And with that sacrilegious hand he holds a power which he now uses to pierce the Saviour’s side, and ravage the Church! But one day he shall look on Him whom he pierced …
"Be not deceived; However it may be, the oracle of the Holy Ghost shall be accomplished; it must be that scandals come, but nevertheless, woe to that man by whom the scandal cometh!” - St. Bernard of Clairvaux
Obama, a staunch, 100% genuine, NARAL-approved pro-deather, upholds the secular order? Also, “to honor” means “to regard with great respect,” something we must do to every human being, kings to peasants. I Pt. 2:17 says:As St. Peter wrote (I Pt. 2:17), we should honor the leader who upholds the secular order.
11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you, as strangers and pilgrims, to refrain yourselves from carnal desires which war against the soul, 12 Having your conversation good among the Gentiles: that whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by the good works which they shall behold in you, glorify God in the day of visitation. 13 Be ye subject therefore to every human creature for God’s sake: whether it be to the king as excelling, 14 Or to governors as sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of the good. 15 For so is the will of God, that by doing well you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: 16 As free and not as making liberty a cloak for malice, but as the servants of God. 17 Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.
St. Peter did not say “admire and celebrate” the king. There is much to admire and celebrate in the life and work of President Obama. His views and policies on immigration, expanding health care, alleviating poverty, and building peace through diplomacy have a deep resonance with Catholic social teaching. As the first African-American holder of this office, he has accelerated our country’s progress in overcoming the painful legacy of slavery and segregation. He is a remarkable figure in American history, and I look forward to welcoming him to Notre Dame.
