Letting children walk away from the faith, like Jesus

I have the same problem, I have 3 adult kids (all went to Catholic schools) who lapsed… but I went through the same journey. I lapsed sometime in college and returned about 10 or 15 years later.

Encourage them to continue searching for God. Be a good Catholic yourself. Get them some books on the lives of the saints, get a couple of green scapulars and pray for them, as St. Monica did for St. Augustine.

God will lead them home. We have to place our trust in Him. He knows what He is doing… we don’t. It took 55 years for my oldest sister to convert… she did this past Holy Saturday.

There’s a quote from G. K. Chesterton (himself a convert to Catholicism after a very roundabout journey) which I’m fond of: it’s something like:

“There are two ways to find one’s way home. One is never to leave it; the other is to walk all the way around the world till one comes back to one’s home.”

Some people, it seems, just need to take that long walk around the world.
