Leviticus 19:28 "you shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor tattoo any marks on you: I am the Lord

That prohibition is associated with pagan worship, which is why it was forbidden. From a Christian point of view, it is OT discipline, which has passed away and been replaced by the disciplines of the Church.

From the commentary on this verse in the New American Bible, Revised Edition:
This prohibition probably refers only to the common ancient Near Eastern practice of branding a slave with its owner’s name as well as branding the devotees of a god with its name. (source)
If that is the case, then there would not necessarily be anything sinful with getting other kinds of tattoos.

Some Old Testament laws were only made for Israel for a certain period of time when God made a covenant with Israel. We as Catholics aren’t bound by the OT ceremonial laws.👍

So they changed the bible??
And even so, to follow up on @michael-kaw the law doesn’t apply the way you think it does.

Although self-harm is still a sin, if that’s what you’re wondering about.

The Bible must always be read within the context of the Church’s living tradition.

Oops, I have pierced ears…must be the mark of the devil…begone wicked one!

Was tattooing technology already known in the Middle East in Moses’ day? Or is this just yet another instance of “dynamic equivalence” dreamed up by our present-day Bible translators?

In any case, I’m grateful to @Teacher for this post. At long last, here’s one sin I’ve never committed! Who’d a thunk it.

What’s the point of bringing this up? Is it to try and trap us Catholics and prove we’re sinners?

Because we will all heartily agree to that. Thank God, we have a Redeemer in Jesus Christ and a Church to bring us back into communion with Him!

Your name - that you chose - is " Teacher " - ah haha ah ohhh that’s a good one 😁

What are your qualifications for the seemingly presumptuous username of “Teacher”? Possession of a bible does not a teacher make.

It seems to me that a truly sharp, well informed teacher would know that Christians are not under the Levitical law…
