Hello, I work in HR at medical company and one of my duties is coming up with training about cultural sensitivity and non-discrimination.

Someone on my staff recommended I include transgender people in non-discrimination policies, because there are several trans-gendered people working there.

Although I am certainly not for being uncharitable towards transgendered people, I feel like I am supporting what I see to be a confusion of how the person was made by God. I don’t think transgendered people should actually try and change their gender, because that is one of the few things fixed biologically and in our chromosomes, and we can’t change God’s creation in that way.

I feel kind of going against my conscience drawing up and teaching a policy that includes accepting transgender behavior. What should I do morally and what is right, in light of the Catholic faith?

Sincerely,
Tim

Why would you have to endorse changing (or attempting to change) gender in the policy you draft?

The thrust of the policy would presumably be “don’t be a jerk to transgender people you work with” not “people with gender dysphoria should get surgery to mutiliate their genitals.”

I’m confused about whether you are developing training materials or whether you are developing policies.

If your job is to develop training materials, then familiarize yourself with the policies in force and create materials to educate people about them. My interpretation of most of the HR-type training I receive comes down to “don’t be a jerk” and “don’t do anything you’d be ashamed to see reported in the news.”

If your job is to develop policies, you have a much bigger job in front of you. At the very least you need to be aware of federal, state, and local laws and regulations to ensure that you are in compliance with them. I assume you’re working with lawyers as well as HR people.

What is the point of this training? I think everyone by now realizes that if there is even a hint of discrimination against most groups there will be lawyers lined up with paperwork in hand ready to file a lawsuit. And any employee with even the slightest awareness of how things work these days will realize that even looking at people from most groups the wrong way will result in being fired swiftly on demand.

It’s to preempt the employee from being able to say “no one told me I couldn’t do that…” you’re right that most people know just by common sense, but this just makes the firing that much easier because the company can say “and we specificially warned you not to harass so and so…”

While all non discrimination policies say don’t harrass, “be a jerk” , spelling out what what actions constitute that is another issue. For example my work wants me to help build policy and training to make sure no nurse or clinician can refuse to call coworkers by their chosen gender pronoun etc.

Federal law , Title VIiI doesn’t cover this and Trump is looking at making sure it coincides with biological gender.

This policy is in response to a nurse saying, according to my faith, I don’t consider it proper to call a man a women and vice versa. Even if they wish to be called that.

If someone wanted to be called King of the world when they weren’t,you probably wouldn’t oblige, but if someone had misidentified their own gender, you would have to play along. That is what gets me, and I guess makes my conscience rub when I am tasked with this.

Ah, I see. Yeah, that’s a little stickier. I suppose you could say something about how in a clinical setting it’s policy to use whatever gender pronoun the patient wants in order to facilitate care or something. Like you could direct it as a prudential matter while not requiring people to actually endorse the new gender.

You can believe that and still produce training on being respectful and what the company policies are. I manage the training dept at my company and we added transgender (complying with CA law) to our diversity and respect training.

Making statements such as “at XYZ company people may use the restroom of their choice” simply states a fact. Being respectful and non discriminatory to coworkers and customers in no way implies support of their choices.

It’s not about respecting Transgender people in the broad sense, it is about recognizing their right to be called whatever they want, whether that is legally their name or biologically their gender.

If I wanted to be called the CEO, but was only a manager, I couldn’t demand the right to be called the CEO of my department, could I?

Saying a man is a woman or that Eve is actually now Steve (another gender) is indeed not a statement of fact. Adding or removing sexual organs, lipstick, clothing etc does not change the sexual meaning of the body God gave. We can’t change our chromosomes or our biology. Any biologist who said we could would be laughed out of their department, because it just isn’t so.

So if they told you to do something against your deeply held religious beliefs, you should do it or quit? That would be a hostile work environment, which is illegal.

The point of this training is to force all Christians to call trans-gendered people by their preferred names.

Isn’t the policy basically “treat everyone fairly, no matter what their race, gender, religion, age . . .” ? How does that conflict with the Catholic faith?
No, that’s not the policy, from the comments I’ve heard from those mandating it, it is about how can we fire Christians who don’t agree with Transgender-ism.

I’d assume this company is secular, and, as such, any attempt to insert religion wouldn’t go well.
I’m not inserting religion, I am trying to be true to my conscience and religious beliefs about man and woman. An employer can’t force someone to violate their beliefs.

I’ve worked in corporate HR for literally decades. There’s no such policy.
I would think that the policy would be, “Create a non-hostile work environment for everyone,” not, “Let’s punish Christians.”
