Liberal Catholics, why are you still members of The Church?

Not to be uncharitable, but if you don’t love it and what it stands for why stay? If you want a church that ordains women’s and accept gays and wants on demand abortion, go be a unitarian or a lutheran or what have you. Why do you stay? What keeps you catholic?
Not to be uncharitable, but I’d be willing to bet that God keeps them in the Church so that you can learn how to love them.

Here you are starting with a logical fallacy, you are implying that people that disagree with some of the Church teachings or disciplines do not love the Church. Just because I do not like someone I still love them, and a lot of people might have the same attitude toward the Church. Honestly, I think that people that truly do not love the Church already left her.
Did Judas love Christ? He stayed all the way to the betrayal.

What the Church teaches and what the Church IS cannot be divorced or separated.

Those who do not love the Church’s teachings do not love the Church. It’s not a logical fallacy to state this plain truth. One can’t kinda love Christ.

What you’re arguing for is akin to believing in Math but not 2+2=4, saying it’s 5. That’s not math, it’s just false.

Not all liberal Catholics want gay marriage, women priests or abortion on demand:eek:

On this forum you might be labelled a liberal Catholic if you go to Adoration in your sandals, hold hands during the Our Father, and like to shake hands at the kiss of peace!🤷

You might think me a liberal Catholic if I don’t believe in Biblical literalism in Genesis, believe in Evolution, like the OF, and take communion in the hand (all of which I do).

So why do I stay? 'Cos its my Church buddy! I belong to the Body of Christ: It’s my God, my Lord present in the Eucharist, my parish, and the place where I do my ministries, and where my family worships, and where my daughter serves on the altar:thumbsup:.
Ditto!! Exactamundo!😃

Papa disagrees…

lifesitenews.com/news/pope-suggests-its-best-to-be-honest-and-leave-the-church-if-you-dont-believ

It’s an honest question. Are they truly just struggling intellectually? Not really. Many have been told proper doctrine and just reject it in favor of their own brand.

In fact, I think many hope to change the Church. They inject heresy. Scripture ain’t touchy-feely on the subject of heresy and the heretics who espouse it. Neither are the Fathers.
Just as some are unwilling to change in the way you suggest, so to some are unwilling to change when the Church speaks on other subjects as well. I guess by your logic, if you can’t get behind VII, you also must leave the Church.

i have only been Catholic for 4 years, so i haven’t been around that long, but i was shocked to learn how many liberal Catholics there are that don’t support many of the teachings of the Catholic church. it was very disheartening. i believe as another poster said, Catholicism is all they know. they love being Catholic, and i feel they want to remain Catholic, but pick and choose what they like and don’t like about the teachings. i have met many that support gay marriage, homosexuality, are hoping someday to see female priests presiding over the Mass. others have told me that reason they stay is to try to change the church. i asked one of my friends once why she didn’t join another church if she believe in pro-choice, homosexuality, gay marriage, female priests. she looked shocked as though she would not even think of it. she even takes communion at the protestant churches her daughter attends when she goes to the services with her. she is in her 80’s and a cradle Catholic. very feisty. it is very confusing for me that they don’t seem to see a conflict in worshipping as a Catholic and at the same time in total disagreement with the Church on many, many issues.
We need to PRAY for them! I do.

Excellent representation of your point my friend. Once again, you hit the nail directly on the head!

For better and worse, catholicism is both a religion and a culture. Many people appreciate the culture even after they’ve abandoned the religion. It’s human nature, to a certain extent.

A better question is “Why are orthodox, believing catholics always trying to chase lukewarm, nominal catholics out of the church instead of sharing Christ with them?”

Here here!

Let’s not forget that some become so distracted with the culture/customs on both sides that they forget Tradition, Dogma, Doctrine, and ignore the authority of THE Church.

My sister in law has been a nun for about 45 years. She believes that women were/should be/will be ordained in the Catholic Church. She is pro-life and pro-marriage, but not noisily so. She votes Democrat, because well…all good Polish vote Democrat. At least that’s the best answer I can come up with.

So, she is less than obedient in areas of Church doctrine. She has been a teacher and principal. She has worked at a home for abandoned and abused children. She ran a foster home, taking in 3 troubled teenage boys at a time, -by herself-. The toughest of the tough, murdered parents, sexually abused, violent tendencies. She has made a huge difference in the lives of many many people. She has kept vows for 45 years.

Aside from her lack of assent to some Church doctrines and disciplines , she has lead a very charitable life of Christian service. I really don’t think it’s honest to question the motivations or dispositions of a person like this, when she has lived more charity and sacrifice than I could ever hope to.

Yes. This is true. Vatican II in line with Tradition or the erroneous and totally evil interpretation of Vatican II, leading to false religious practices (or approval of them)? If the latter, that’s not Catholic. If the former, that’s Catholic.

Such Sorry Protestant eXamples… they should leave and quit claiming the Church. Abp. Lefebvre would die twice and choke on vomit if he could see the chimera his society has become.

Wow - thanks for that.😛

I don’t actually remember saying that I don’t know and/or teach the faith - or that I don’t live the teachings of the Church either.

Carry on.👍
I apologise. I think I was still incensed with other posts and ended up “picking” on you. I do think we ought to encourage other members and pray for them. I am a revert and sometimes I get a little excited. I have been thru the hoops - revolutionary, progressive, secularist… then I came to my senses and became orthodox. :)😉

*So knowing the Faith so as to be able to defend it is arrogant, presumptuous and just rude?

“Get behind me Satan!”*

What does it mean to “know” the faith?
Keep in mind (you mentioned Satan) that the demons believe the truth. They are the first in the gospels to point out the truth of who Christ is. That doesn’t mean they “know” the faith.
