I was at a mass this morning where the cantor sang the invocation part of the penitential rite at the beginning of mass. The priest did do the last part of asking for forgiviness. Is that licit?
The introduction to the Penitential Act – the words like “Before we enter these sacred mysteries, let us first call to mind our sins” – belong to the priest alone.I was at a mass this morning where the cantor sang the invocation part of the penitential rite at the beginning of mass. Yup, form C is how it shook down. I just cannot ever remember a cantor doing this in the past. Thanks both of you for replying! The introduction to the Penitential Act – the words like “Before we enter these sacred mysteries, let us first call to mind our sins” – belong to the priest alone.
However, if you’re talking about Form C of the Penitential Act, then the cantor can sing those words. Form C is something like “Lord Jesus, you came to call sinners: Lord, have mercy. / Christ Jesus, you came to heal the sick: Christ, have mercy. / Lord Jesus, you came to give sight to the blind: Lord, have mercy.” The cantor can sing that. But the introduction to the Penitential Act is for the priest to say.
Wow! I did not even think about a cantor possibly singing the introduction I was just thinking of the Kyrie part. I guess that either I am naive or thanks to God my parish is quite orthodox. The introduction to the Penitential Act – the words like “Before we enter these sacred mysteries, let us first call to mind our sins” – belong to the priest alone.

And what comes after the cantor is finished is also for the priest to say.The introduction to the Penitential Act – the words like “Before we enter these sacred mysteries, let us first call to mind our sins” – belong to the priest alone.
