1) I suspect that nothing will sway you if you feel that your need for God is being challenged.

Funny, I was about to say the contrary to you.

Guys, it’s page nine. If phantasm hasn’t proven by now he’s nothing but a troll, there’s no such thing as trolling. I’m still fairly new here, so maybe I’m about to step on an unwritten rule about backseat modding… but let’s stop feeding the troll. (With apologies to the mods.)

Same goes for all religions.

Just rephrase;

Nobody should just go along with what the religious leaders set forth just because the religious leaders are experts, if it goes against what one already knows.’

The difference, science is based upon evidence, religion is based upon faith due to the complete absence of evidence.
But Jesus wasn’t any old expert. He was and is and always will be the very Word of God. If you don’t believe the theologians who teach what Christ taught then at least still seek truth to your best ability, like I hope you still are. When Jesus died it was documented by historians. When Jesus was ressurected it was witnessed by masses of people and recorded in the Bible. If you choose not to accept the historians or the source of the Bible as testimony good enough that Jesus existed and rose from the dead, I don’t really know how to respond other than encourage you to still seek truth with as much openness to the possibility of a God of righeousness and self-giving. I’m not meaning to patronize you in the least by saying this, but I will pray that you will come to experience Jesus in a meaningful way before you die. I don’t think you are bad. You just don’t know God (yet)…so how are you to believe he exists!🙂 What do you think of Pascal’s Wager?

Instead of resorting to name calling, why not gracefully exit?

Amazing, and I’m the one who keeps getting reported to the mods?
🤷

How strong is this faith if I am such a threat around here?

I didn’t report you to the mods. I merely suggested that everyone stop feeding you, the clearest example of a troll I’ve seen since the TrekBBS was overrun with Shatner Worshippers after the new Star Trek movie was announced. I really hold you no ill will… but I think anyone carrying on any kind of serious conversation with you is, at this point, provably silly.

And I actually gracefully exited a while ago, but I’m sick of this thread leaping to the top of my subscription list over and over again long after useful conversation ended (which was around page two).

If you insist on continuing, and you find conversational partners willing to do so, I have no serious problem with that; it’s merely silly. I just hope the mods don’t warn me for backseat modding.

Then delete the thread from your subscriptions? 🤷

I created this thread and my main question, was actually adequately answered a while ago. I certainly do not agree with the answer, but I now know how the Catholic Church views this issue.

This thread has evolved into other, what I call interesting topics. If you do not want to partake, then make like a bee and buzz off.

Your worried about being reported?

You have nothing to worry about.

I an Atheist, if I admit around here that I do not believe in a specific thing ( notice how I am being very careful :D) I then have to look over my shoulder…

It’s odd that I have to look over my shoulder, as I am an Atheist, it kinda goes with the territory that I deny the circumstance of certain things that may be of interest to various people in the world?

So, even though it is obvious that I hold certain beliefs, I shall refrain from expressing them.

I shall tread carefully.

Know one yet knows conclusively how the universe came to be. There are several theories, but there is as of yet, no answer. There may never be an answer…time will tell.

I never said I knew how the universe began, but simply I find it easier to believe that there is something, instead of nothing and that something came about via natural means, over the existence of an eternal super God that had no beginning and has existed forever.

Basically, you all believe that God had no creator, yet you laugh at the idea that the universe does not need a creator.

Nice to see that your learning to communicate, rather than simply use emoticons and sharp little barbs directed at me.

The Catholic God is somewhat like the author of a book - the book is related to the author, but the author is not confined by the book; nor would he be, even if he wrote himself into it.

What Catholics believe about this God cannot be understood if one adopts a model or description of reality in which God is not able to be anything other than an item within the universe: for such a description or model starts by requiring Catholics to explain why they hold a doctrine about God that their vision of reality rules out from the start. Catholic doctrine allows for God to be immanent “in” the universe - & to that extent, it overlaps with what your question requires God to be; where it differs from what your question requires God to be, is in its insistence that the God Who is immanent in the universe is equally God Who transcends the universe. Catholic doctrine, like mainstream Christianity, holds both statements about God; & neither can be sacrificed to the other. God is not a phenomenon in the universe (universe = totality of all things that are created), but the Unique “trans-phenomenal” Reality “behind” all phenomena. There is no stepping-stone or ladder from creatures to God; so from a Christian POV, it is incoherent & meaningless to treat God as one phenomenon among others: it makes even less sense than to ask what sort of liquid granite is; it is a category error.

The author transcends his book - God transcends all created being, only far more so than any created author could: He is not a “giant in the sky”. God is “beyond” time & space - so if words about Him are pressed, “God lives forever” is inaccurate; it implies that eternity is a form of time; it’s not, any more than fire is a form of water.

Hope that makes some sense.

Yes, during my involvement with this thread this passage had come to my mind. You captured it with your post - that’s neat!🙂
