Talk to any teen who has been to a Franciscan University Youth Conference (I have), and he/she will tell you that the MUSIC is awesome, the Gospel MESSAGE is relevant, and the MASS is exciting! Contemporary spirit-filled music has produced much fruit already, as you can see in the thousands of young people who go to these conferences and other similar events. These young people are in love with Christ and the Catholic Church! Isn’t that GREAT? You got to have the MUSIC, the MESSAGE, and the MASS.

I’m glad that you have witnessed that, but not all teen masses are like that. I went to one in my parish for a few weeks and was greatly disturbed. I hope that the masses for teens change and produce real Catholics with a love for Christ, but the one at my parish is not that way at all.
I am sorry that your parish is dry. But that is not the fault of life teen. That is a problem with the people in your parish.

The ultratraditionalistss wouldn’t want young people to actually be in love with Christ, now would they. 😦

It is a powerful, unforgetable experience to see and hear a thousand young people singing and praising God at Mass. There are smiles and tears, and arms lifted up. There are several young people in the “choir” singing their hearts out, accompanied by guitars, piano, drums, and other instruments.

It’s time (long overdue) to bring that wonderful experience of worshipping God into our parishes.

As long as the music is truly catholic and not just christian. and as long as mass is respected. Remember, that is the true precense of God before us, and i think drawing attention to oneself during mass is kind of innapropriate. God is the focus, not ones friend sitting in the pew two rows back. How come everyone is stuck on the music? No one really seems to reply to what I have to say about the sign of peace, or changing mass to make it fun or “cool”. Try talking about those.

Show me a Teen mass with CATHOLIC MUSIC, (after all, Catholics are Christian, but not all Christians are Catholic), where the Sermons are honest adn not just “cool”, where teens aren’t danicing around like they are at some kind of club, and not running around shaking hands with someone sitting on the opposite end of the Church and maybe I’ll feel a little better about having Teen masses.
If you’re ever in Rancho Cucamonga, CA, stop by my parish, and I’ll show you one like you describe. It truly IS awesome to see how God works in the young people when the Life Teen Mass is done right.

Michael Welter:
That’s not entirely true. Jesus healed on the Sabath, in violation of the law. He harvested food with His apostles on the Sabath, in violation of the law. And He reminded us that the law was made for us, not us for the law.
Yes and further in the paragraph that you quoted I brought that out.

While I have no doubt as to the sincerity of the youth in the program, you can see the exact same charismatic, revival style shows just about every day from any number of Protestant Churches. Awesome contemporary music, arms swaying, voices lifted up in praise, strong rhythmatic preaching . Yep, the Protestant churches pioneered al of it and mastered the techniques.

It is really funny though that the Catholic Church and the faithful never really needed it before. I wonder why that is, and why it’s needed now…

Actually, we have needed (and have had) good contemporary liturgies over the past 40 years or more. Some parishes have them, and have been able to keep youth interested in participating at Mass. Other parishes have ignored the needs of our youth, and those parishes sadly have very few young people at Mass, or if they are there, they don’t talk or sing or smile at all. When I talk with youth in those parishes, they say that Mass is boring. When I talk with youth after a good Youth Mass, they find the Mass uplifting and exciting.

The Youth Mass that I experienced was not a charismatic Mass (there was no speaking in tongues, …etc, but that’s a different topic), but a spirit-filled one with GREAT music. It’s about time that we get over the idea that good worship music must be a Protestant thing. It’s time to look to the future of the Catholic Church, and not worry about the naysayers and negative thinkers. We have the gospel MESSAGE, the Eucharistic Mass, and we must also have the great MUSIC. Our Protestant brethren might have only one or two, but never all three.

Even a loyal, orthodox, 50-year-old Roman Catholic like myself can appreciate the benefits of good music for our youth (and people of other ages)!

By the way, a Catholic Mass with good contemporary music is not the “exact same” as the “charismatic” Protestant “show” with “rythmatic” preaching.

Far from it. We have the real presence of Christ. We have worship and prayer. We have a priest. We have the sacrament. We have respect and reverence for a God who loves the children.

…And yet, we don’t act like we do

You have acknowledged that the Mass is infinitely superior to a Protestant “service”. So, we should use the music to proclaim that to the world.

Exactly. And that is what life teen does, proclaims it to world and not just to upper class senior citizens.

Being the mother of two school age children in a very traditional parish, I can tell you that the children expect what we give them.

If we do a “Sunday School” like Children’s Liturgy of the Word and treat them like kiddies who need to be entertained that is what they will expect. They will not look at us and strive to be adults in our church but rather as perpetual children.

That being said, if you could hear my five year old sing “O Sanctissima” with her choir, it would bring tears to your eyes.

Much better than “We all need a little Salt, need a little light.” with hand motions.

I’ve seen several of you state that the style of music played at a Life Teen Mass is fine outside of Mass, but wrong at Mass. I can’t help but wonder, what is it about the Mass that takes something that is otherwise fine, and makes it wrong?

I am totally against the idea that the purpose of mass is for entertainment but it seems like you ultra traditionalists are on the entire opposite end of the specturm. You make it sound as if the purpose of mass is to be borring and only then will it be pleasing to our Lord Jesus Christ :rotfl: .The more borring the better. . I really think that if some one happens to enjoy the mucis at mass, then great. That may not be the purpose but we don’t have to aim at making the mass as unenjoyable as possible.

Whoa!
Were did you get that I’m an Ultra-Traditionalist?

Our Holy Mass is far from boring but it is not a Jesus party either. We play hard and pray hard. Our kids know the difference.
We sing the “Historically Catholic” songs. We leave the “Happy Catholic” songs for our Kids for Jesus program.

With participation, Latin songs are wonderful.
My daughters can sing songs in Slovak, Latin, Polish, Japanese and English. They are 5 & 7.
And the problem is?

The problem is… we need to remember (or learn if you never knew) that the liturgy is all supposed to be about Him. When we think it is about us… the music changes, the postures change, the entertainment is emphasized…etc.

Community is great… for the coffee and donuts afterwards.

Church (Luther’s definition) is the place where the sacraments are duly administered, and where we (WE) worship God (GOD).

I think from God’s perspective, it’s all about us. He instituted the Eucharist for our benefit. If not for us, there would be no need for the Eucharist.

I would have to ask you to define “new”.
How about anything written in the last 5 years.
