Let me know in which case did she ALONE make a decision which affected the whole legislative process , without allowing the rest of the House even to discuss it on the floor? The way McConnell acted was a perfect example of autocratic behavior, exactly like any king, despot or dictator would act. Why do you try to deny it? Is it embarrassing? It should be!
she has stopped a lot of legislation don’t kid yourself. she is holding up the stimulus bailout now since it doesn’t contain what she wants
Then don’t tell me it’s correcting a mistake when it’s really a power grab.
power-grab? what is expanding the court to suit your agenda as the Dems threaten to do? Mcconnell is just playing the game as it is allowed. like the Dems…

why are so many on this board upset with a pro-life catholic judge?

Biden is pro-abortion
“If they ruled it to be unconstitutional, I will send to the United States Congress, and it will pass I believe, a bill that legislates Roe v. Wade adjusted by Casey,” Biden said, referring to a later Supreme Court case that prohibited undue burdens on abortion rights. “It’s a woman’s right to do that. Period.”

why are so many on this board upset with a pro-life catholic judge?
Just my theory…
It proves that the president can and does have a great deal of influence as to whether or not abortion stays legal.
And with that, people can no longer claim the republican side is just paying lip service and are not serious about doing anything.

Then they lose any excuse at all for voting against a pro life candidate.

Playing by the rules allowed by the Constitution, a position I wouldn’t advocate…
Do you advocate non-constitutional activity then?
but when a Republican Senate won’t look at a Supreme Court nominee in the last year of Obama’s presidency but will push through a Trump nominee, then you do what you have to do.
Very short sighted.
As this circumstance proves so well, turnabout can and will happen.
Do you really want to establish a precedent of packing the court when things don’t go your way?
I assure you the court would end up packed in the other direction the next time power sways.

What are you asking about?
Sorry, I thought I was clearer.
See the quote below…
Playing by the rules allowed by the Constitution, a position I wouldn’t advocate
Sounds to me like you do not advocate following the rules allowed by the constitution.
I am uncertain what rules should be followed if that is the case.
No, but I think that both sides will need to reach a compromise that actually works at some point and it’s clear a Senate held by Republcians will play games, so it probably will be necessary for a Democratic Senate to push things to get a compromise in place.
I agree. But I need to qualify that.
Both sides need to reach a compromise in most cases. Usually there is a deadlock one way or the other and there needs to be give and take (compromise) just to get the vote done.
However, in this case no compromise is necessary to get the job done.

It really falls on the fault of the voters that voted in the majority of the senate to be Republican.
Further, after that majority was established in 2016 it was further increased in 2018.

Having a majority in place and then having it increased seems to be a clear message from the voters that they think the senate is doing a good job…and that the voting public wants more of the same from the senate.

One can readily see why the Republicans in the senate would feel they need no compromise with the Democrats.

Good job voters…or bad job. depending on the political bent of the observer. . . .

The Constitution does not say how many Supreme Court justices should be on the court, so, if the Democrats in Congress decided to change that, it would be allowed by the Constitution.
Correct.
But they would likely receive some push back from the voting public as well as the supreme court itself. RBG spoke against this…they would have a tough time advocating her “dying wish” on one hand but ignoring her wisdom on the other.
Actually, it wasn’t the majority of voters that voted for a Republican Senate. Remember, the Senate is not representative.
How else does a senator get in place if not elected by the voters in his state?
You are correct that the senate is not representative of the people…they represent the states.
But they are still voted for by the people in the states.
Oh, I agree, unless there is a threat that the Democrats will expand the Court when they are in power, there is no reason for the Republicans to compromise. Furthermore, that goes both ways as I expect you won’t be seeing attempts to find common ground with Republicans going forward.
Perhaps not.
There have been many years of a one sided push from Democrats that the Republican side may well consider time for payback.
Remember the Affordable Care Act? That the house actually altered procedural rules to push it through since they couldn’t get the votes. No semblance of compromise there…just a ruthless push.
I do not believe the Republicans will forget that treatment.
So nice. And I thought we were having a fruitful conversation, but you couldn’t help yourself.
Come on…you can’t get a laugh from it?
It’s hysterical. It embodies everything wrong with the opposition in politics.
And best part is, it doesn’t matter what side you are on.

The State is not truly represented in the Senate. At least not in my State. We have a 60/40 split of Republican/Democrat registered voters. The entire state votes for both Senators. The State puts 2 Republicans into the Senate. The 40% are not represented in the Senate at all. The 40% are disenfranchised.

The minority of my State is not represented in the Senate. Maybe Senate seats should be broken up like the Representatives. Split my State somewhere along a north and south boundary based on the last census. Northern counties vote on one Senate seat and the Southern counties vote on the other Senate seat.

what do you call packing the court, that the Dems threaten? isn’t this playing games…

what compromise do we see in the house? why would the senate be different?
The Constitution does not say how many Supreme Court justices should be on the court, so, if the Democrats in Congress decided to change that, it would be allowed by the Constitution.
for Catholics, the issue would be the reason, they will pack the court to secure abortion. this is what they are fighting for, is it acceptable to the church?

actually it was, the majority in their states.

The primary function of the Senate is to represent the interest of the state in the political process as opposed to the House of Representatives which represents the interest of the people. In the Congress, there are 100 senators at any given time and each state has two senators. The senator serves for a term of six years…

The State is comprised of people.

As a noun, a people permanently occupying a fixed territory bound together by common habits and custom into one body politic exercising, through the medium of an organized government, independent sovereignty and control over all persons and things within its boundaries, capable of making war and peace and of entering into international relations with other states. The section of territory occupied by one of the United States. The people of a state, in their collective capacity, considered as the party wronged by a criminal deed; the public; as in the title of a case, “The State v. A. B.” The circumstances or condition of a being or thing at a given time.

Correct.
So one should not be looking to the senate to represent the people.
One should look to the house instead.

To claim that a block of voters is disenfranchised for lack of representation is to lose sight of what exactly the senate represents.

The Senate represents the State which comprises the People by legal definition.

Well, I don’t know what to tell you.
You even quoted the pertinent information yourself.
Here it is again…
"The primary function of the Senate is to represent the interest of the state in the political process as opposed to the House of Representatives which represents the interest of the people. "

And you ignore this:

Too bad they don’t make an example of “the people v A.B.”
It would make more sense then.

Nevertheless I see what you mean.

However, one still cannot claim they are disenfranchised if their pick for state senator didn’t make it.
They still have a state senator.
The senator still represents the state.

If you wish to claim that as a member of the state that directly represents you, go ahead.
But you are mistaken if you believe they are to represent your interests. They do not. And the definition you supplied specifically states that.
