Tom:
So this says Elizabeth was a Levite, where does it mention Mary? Simply says they are kin, doesn’t say they are both Levite does it?
Pure speculation, and contrary to Scripture as has already been addressed.
There are so very many possibilities here I won’t even speculate as you are.
O.K. olive branch time, it really makes little difference, it shouldn’t make or break anyone’s faith.
You’re making my point.Elizabeth is a Levite. Mary is Elizabeth’s relative. Therefore Mary is a Levite. As far as where is Mary mentioned. I have no Idea what your talking about unless you excise her name from the text to prove your point, which is the act of a true isolationist, versewise that is.
As far as Jesus priestly and kingly lineage, I’ve given you solid biblical evidence, but you can’t respond in kind. All you can do is cross your arms and say no. De Nile ain’t just a river in Egypt.

Tom:
My speculation was simply to point out that your interpretation lacked merit.

the seed of David , “ACCORDING TO THE FLESH” is fairly clear we’re not talking by adoption. You and I of course are adopted into His brotherhood, He was of the house of David, but not by adoption.
Romans 1.3 Is stressing the incarnation, not that Christ was related to David biologically,See also Rom.9.5. “According to the flesh” doesn’t translate into, 'According to the seed of the flesh of David".

You really lost me there! You are speculating on Mary being a Levite. Are you saying anyone who disagrees with your view must be Protestant?
No, I didn’t ignore it, I simply don’t see your “proof”. You make a lot of claims and logic but no Church teaching to back it up.
Joseph did not take Mary as wife until after she was found to be with child, she was not of the house of David by Joseph until after the Spirit had overshadowed her. See also the note on Mt1, 16 from the DR Bible Those darned Protestant writers… oh wait they are Catholic… BTW since this is an approved Catholic Bible I think I’ll agree with my Church, but I’m open to view your official Church documents which say she must be Levite.
I didn’t say you were protestant. I just said you interpret scripture like a protestant. You isolate verses and ignore scripture that conflict with your pre-conceived notions.
You’ve just proved my point again. “…she WAS NOT OF THE HOUSE OF DAVID by Joseph until after the Spirit had overshadowed her”.
By the way I love the Douay-Rheims bible. As a matter of fact, I’ve read it from cover to cover and continue to read it almost daily, but it’s footnotes are not official Church documents.

Just found this, thought it was interesting.

Mary’s Davidic ancestry
St. Luke (2:4) says that St. Joseph went from Nazareth to Bethlehem to be enrolled, “because he was of the house and family of David”. As if to exclude all doubt concerning the Davidic descent of Mary, the Evangelist (1:32, 69) states that the child born of Mary without the intervention of man shall be given “the throne of David His father”, and that the Lord God has “raised up a horn of salvation to us in the house of David his servant”. [21] St. Paul too testifies that Jesus Christ “was made to him [God] of the seed of David, according to the flesh” (Romans 1:3). If Mary were not of Davidic descent, her Son conceived by the Holy Ghost could not be said to be “of the seed of David”. Hence commentators tell us that in the text “in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God. . .to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David” (Luke 1:26-27); the last clause “of the house of David” does not refer to Joseph, but to the virgin who is the principal person in the narrative; thus we have a direct inspired testimony to Mary’s Davidic descent. [22]
While commentators generally agree that the genealogy found at the beginning of the first Gospel is that of St. Joseph, Annius of Viterbo proposes the opinion, already alluded to by St. Augustine, that St. Luke’s genealogy gives the pedigree of Mary. The text of the third Gospel (3:23) may be explained so as to make Heli the father of Mary: “Jesus. . .being the son (as it was supposed of Joseph) of Heli”, or “Jesus. . .being the son of Joseph, as it was supposed, the son of Heli” (Lightfoot, Bengel, etc.), or again “Jesus. . .being as it was supposed the son of Joseph, who was [the son-in-law] of Heli” [23]. In these explanations the name of Mary is not mentioned explicitly, but it is implied; for Jesus is the Son of Heli through Mary.

Her parents
Though few commentators adhere to this view of St. Luke’s genealogy, the name of Mary’s father, Heli, agrees with the name given to Our Lady’s father in a tradition founded upon the report of the Protoevangelium of James, an apocryphal Gospel which dates from the end of the second century. According to this document the parents of Mary are Joachim and Anna. Now, the name Joachim is only a variation of Heli or Eliachim, substituting one Divine name (Yahweh) for the other (Eli, Elohim). The tradition as to the parents of Mary, found in the Gospel of James, is reproduced by St. John Damascene [24], St. Gregory of Nyssa [25], St. Germanus of Constantinople [26], pseudo-Epiphanius [27], pseudo-Hilarius [28], and St. Fulbert of Chartres [29]. Some of these writers add that the birth of Mary was obtained by the fervent prayers of Joachim and Anna in their advanced age. As Joachim belonged to the royal family of David, so Anna is supposed to have been a descendant of the priestly family of Aaron; thus Christ the Eternal King and Priest sprang from both a royal and priestly family [30].

Mary: Mother of God
Fundamentalists are sometimes horrified when the Virgin Mary is referred to as the Mother of God. However, their reaction often rests upon a misapprehension of not only what this particular title of Mary signifies but also who Jesus was, and what their own theological forebears, the Protestant Reformers, had to say regarding this doctrine.

A woman is a man’s mother either if she carried him in her womb or if she was the woman contributing half of his genetic matter or both. Mary was the mother of Jesus in both of these senses; because she not only carried Jesus in her womb but also supplied all of the genetic matter for his human body, since it was through her—not Joseph—that Jesus “was descended from David according to the flesh” (Rom. 1:3).

It’s only disputable if people question the faithfulness of Joseph and Mary. Faithful Jews only married within their tribe. Also, will you point me to the specific church teaching which has it that Jesus’ line from David only comes from Joseph?
Sure, here are the two quotes, both which link Jesus to David, and then to God, through Joseph:

Luke 3:23-3:38: "23 Now Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry. He was the son, so it was thought, of Joseph, the son of Heli, 24 the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melki, the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph,25 the son of Mattathias, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of Esli, the son of Naggai, 26 the son of Maath, the son of Mattathias, the son of Semein, the son of Josek, the son of Joda,27 the son of Joanan, the son of Rhesa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, the son of Neri, 28 the son of Melki, the son of Addi, the son of Cosam, the son of Elmadam, the son of Er,29 the son of Joshua, the son of Eliezer, the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, 30 the son of Simeon, the son of Judah, the son of Joseph, the son of Jonam, the son of Eliakim,31 the son of Melea, the son of Menna, the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan, the son of David, 32 the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Salmon,[a] the son of Nahshon,33 the son of Amminadab, the son of Ram,**the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah, 34 the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor,35 the son of Serug, the son of Reu,the son of Peleg, the son of Eber, the son of Shelah, 36 the son of Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem, the son of Noah, the son of Lamech,37 the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalalel, the son of Kenan, 38 the son of Enosh, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.

and then, Matthew 1-16: “…and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah.”

So, although this is eight years later, I too wonder about this. You repeatedly reiterate again and again, trying to match the redundancy, that traditionally Jews married within their own tribes; unless Mary was Joseph’s sibling, though, I don’t see how there could be a straight line of descendency from David to Jesus through Mary.

If you’re still around, Semper Fi, please set this straight for me. Thanks,
Che B.**
