List of similarity in doctrine with catholics and mormons

See there is something we can agree on. Here is what I believe about the resurrection of Jesus, let me know if I get something wrong.

When we die our spirit leaves our physical body. When Jesus died on the cross his body was placed in the tomb and his spirit went to paradise. He said to the thief on the cross next to him “Today thou shalt be with me in paradise.” (Luke 23:43) On the third day he was resurrected. His spirit was again united with his body and Jesus arose from the tomb. He appeared to 11 apostles and others who had gathered together. They thought they had seen a spirit but Jesus said to them “Handle me and see for a spirit hath not flesh and bones as ye see me have.” (Luke 24:39) We know that he will never die again and that his spirit will never leave his body again. He will always have this glorified eternal body of flesh and bones because Paul wrote: “Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.” (Rom 6:9) Jesus’ followers saw him ascend into heaven and the angels said to them: "This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. (Acts 1:11)

This is not in the Bible or in the LDS scriptures. Again this leaves us to speculate based on other revelations we have recieved. One of our church hymns tells of this speculation. Here is verse three from “O My Father.”

I had learned to call thee Father
Through thy Spirit from on high
But until the key of knowledge
Was restored, I knew not why.
In the heaven are parents single?
No; the thought makes reason stare!
Truth is reason, truth eternal
Tells me I’ve a mother there.

**Restored? Restored? You can’t restore what is not gone…just because Joseph Smith said so…doesn’t work that way.

Tell me more about that mother there…not much mention of her…and where is she…and what is her name?

Mary is the Mother of Jesus…my parents on earth are my parents…I am a Child of God…and so are you…we just don’t agree and might never on who and what God is…Just can’t wrap my intellectual around the idea of becoming a God if I do everything right and having spirit babies to inhabitate another planet…this is taught…I heard it…my ex told me all about it, so did the missionaries…who’s wrong…what’s right?

I’ll take my Catholic God and Jesus and our Holy Spirit…our Bible and teachings…I’ve read your book of Mormon, WOW, Pearls of Great Price etc…I don’t think so…

Sorry I didn’t fully read your quote from the catechism earlier. We non-LDS are shocked by the concept when it comes from the mouth of one who is LDS; we assume you mean something different from what we mean. There’s a reason for that: statements by Joseph Smith, Lorenzo Snow, etc., summed up in the Encyclopedia of Mormonism, as CatholicGuyNY posted ealier in this thread.

So here are my questions: Exactly what meaning do LDS attribute to the phrase? Why would the encyclopedia, available online at the church’s flagship university, llead people astray on this point?

Zaff provided a good quote above that compares Catholic Theosis vs LDS Exaltation.
There are clear differences but I’ve found that most catholics had no knowledge of Theosis.
Understanding Theosis does give some proper perspective to Exaltation.

I don’t believe we have to agree with each other but I do believe that all Christians need to try to understand each other, learn to love each other and work together for the cause of Christ. I believe this is something we must do before Christ returns. “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” (John 13:35) :bible1:

I agree with your position here as it is reasonable, and not unreasonable to seek or ask.

Well here’s a big thing Mormons and Catholics have in common: they both have extra books that aren’t in the real Bible. Though I admit I am a biiiit more inclined to believe the Apocrypha than the BoM.
