My lenten fasting for Ash Wednesday…

Breakfast: Cup of milk and Tea with gelatin (I am on a high protein diet)

Lunch: milk, banana, and coffee shake (with gelatin)

Dinner: One 5X8 gluten free pizza crust with tomato sauce and cheese

This was my second year of fasting and I am proud I went without snacking 🙂

There are some pretty interesting readings about fasting today in the Liturgy. Isaiah 58, the first reading for the Mass, and today’s gospel. I think it points to: what does our fast accomplish? Is it to make us feel good about ourselves for being dutiful fasters like the Pharisees in today’s gospel?

Or do we use our fast to direct us towards acts of charity, for example, sharing what we give up with those who need it? Our “fast” could even mean eating a hearty meal to give us strength to go out into the night, into the arctic cold we are currently experiencing, to give aid to street people.

Since becoming diabetic, I have had to re-examine what is meant by fasting. I can only hang my head in shame at the lack of charity I express for those in need. Before when I could fast, I could feel good about myself for being a good, dutiful Catholic while ignoring the misery around us. I was missing the mark by a country mile.

Being an on again off again dieter, it is hard for me to approach lent with fasting. Even though I understand that fallacy of my reasoning, I instinctively think of it in terms of “just another form of dieting”

I find myself thinking in terms of calories, health foods and giving up butter. I don’t like this approach but it is hard to shake it off.

What I hope to accomplish this lent is to find a way to stop focusing on food and focusing on prayer. I am going to try to pray the Liturgy of the Hours - Morning Prayer, Evening Prayer and Night Prayer. I will try to fast an hour before each Prayer. This is what I hope I can continue to do after Lent as well.

Low fat, loaded with electrolytes/protein and and totally hip.

I have been using the fasting breads that I heard on the radio from a website called “live the Fast”. I stop after eating dinner the night before and eat 3 rolls until 6 o clock the next day. It gives me about an 18 hour bread and water fast. I am going to try to do it every Friday during lent. I do drink a little coffee in the morning so I don’t get a headache later in the day while at work.

Bread has a pretty high glycemic index. For some it is better to eat a little protein, something that doesn’t spike the blood sugar. This is especially true of those who are diabetic or exercise a lot.

On Ash Wednesday, I eat nothing. I drink, and only water and coffee. But we may eat once, so I would eat bread and apples. 🙂 But again, not on Feb. 18th did I do this, not on Good friday I will.

We may eat one meal and two snacks which combined do not add to a meal. There’s no obligation to do what you are doing.

This is true.
Was I unclear, and someone thought my advice was to follow what I do?
To be larger, I would say fruit is a great snack for lent.

I thought it might be helpful to list some examples of snacks that are acceptable for fasting this lent season. 😀 Or perhaps share what you had/will have today?
Please remember fasting and abstaining are two different things, and fasting is only required on two days a year - Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Any other fasting is purely voluntary.

Why are you looking for a list of snacks. Fasting is very simple on the required two days a year. I read all the threads on this topic and people are talking about weighing food and counting calories.
Some people are trying to make this so complicated. How hard is it just to cut down the quantity of food on these two days compared to what is normally eaten.

A nice relaxing cup of Chamomile tea as a snack for you! 😉
