Rock and roll is not just music. It is a lifestyle and those artists who achive success there are anti-Christ. Their lifestyle is Anti-Christ, sex, drugs and rock and roll. If you are influenced by them and their music you put your soul in jeopardy. But if you enjoy being agitated, having certain passions enflamed, and are drawn into their music you will tell yourself it is harmless and there is no danger there.
That’s a really bad generalization. It would be like saying lifestyle of classical composers is Freemasonry, alcoholism, and homosexuality (which is true for some very influential composers).

or that country western music is all about boozing, chasing skirts, outlaws, good times … hmmmmmm.

Ooh, what about all that “frivolous, impious, and lascivious” polyphony in the Church? Musical instruments should be banned because they all have roots in secularism and paganism!

If this is bothering you. Try looking into Christian Music. So much of it is surprising good. I love Metal, Rock, Grunge and so much more. Try, Jars of Clay, DC Talk, This Fires Embrace, Ilia, We As Human. Take a look…👍
I think a big problem with bands that try to make a cross over from Christian to Rock and vice versa is that they lose a good group of their fans. Jars of Clay is the only band I can think of that has made the transition successfully, and that’s because they really do rock. I wouldn’t say they completely tried to cross over, but think about the band Creed. Their 1st cd was phenomenal. It rocked and had well written lyrics that opened up a spiritual side if you let it. After that, they started writing cheesy power ballads that just made most people think they were lame.

I like rock music, I’ve been to several rock concerts, and plan to keep on going until I’m long in the grave. I have used rock music to amp me up for things, sporting events and workouts for example. I’ve used rock music to study by when I was in college, and it helped me to relax on many occasions. I don’t think just because the music you listen to says certain things a person will go out and do it. That’s weak minded, and that particular person will be succeptible to almost anything. I also don’t think it’s a sin to appreciate the talents of other individuals who have worked hard to hone a craft which they love to do.

no Beach Boys liturgical music then.

I believe the sax was banned in China (during the cultural revolution) for having a suggestive tone.

I’m tempted to play my own version of Body and soul for the forum, but that would agitate some and inflame others and with that kind of sax appeal, I’d just get banned myself.

I’ll just go with The look of love when the wife gets home.

Good times! Some people think misery is good times. Country music has not changed since its inception. Patsy and Hank, replaced by Johnny Cash et al. Your cheatin heart, my broken heart, you lowdown cheatin Elvira, my dog died and my truck broke, what did I do wrong that you left me, crazy for loving you. If those are good times I’ll pass.

Which saint do you think would go see the Stones?

any of the human ones.

Having lived through the late 1950s and 1960s, rock music was often about deep, devoted and romantic love. Songs with titles like Cherish.

I heard an Elvis admirer who was asked on TV why she liked his music so much. She replied: “I always felt he was singing right to me.” Elvis himself said he wanted to be a Gospel singer. Even critics cited his Christmas album as his best.

You look at Motown and then look at the Gospel background of the singers. The music was about true love or the heartbreak caused by losing that true love. Or what you would do to keep that love.

The rebellious music was looked down upon or more appreciated by JD’s (juvenile delinquents). It wasn’t until the later 1960s when the Radicals and Hippies appeared promoting Free Love (sex with anyone) and Drugs Are Cool, that psychedelic rock and truly dysfunctional music (Frank Zappa) began to appear. Mick Jagger would joke about the devil, calling him “'ol Scratch.” The Stones did not have a good (i.e. moral) reputation.

As a Catholic, I could sing along to almost any 1950s or early 1960s song and really enjoy it (except for Louie, Louie, which a team of rock scholars is still attempting to translate into English).

Peace,

To Wirraway -

Not a stretch at all because it was played on the same radio stations. As was the Righteous Brothers. Great stuff!

remember, radio wasn’t formatted the way it is now. DJs had a lot of discretion on what music to choose. I grew up listening to Boss Radio in L.A.

What stopped him? He chose a different path. Where did it take him?

Maybe if he took the gospel path he would not have died a fat depressed wasted drug addict sitting around in his underwer all day. Maybe he would not have used his concerts to set up the rest of the night with women and drugs. Maybe his daughter would not have married Michael Jackson and his granddaughter would not already be a mess if he stayed in church.

The overdoses and suicides and all the tragic stories don’t seem to phase the fans. They call it good times.

Anyone see the new book out on Lennon, the great rock icon? You can look at his life and answer the question from his famous song Imagine. Imagine no religion. I was in NYC near the end of his life. His last band was called Elephant’s Memory. They were all heroin addicts and so was he.

I played music with the club players and bands in the city back then. My roommate killed himself after coming home from a club date. Another aquaintance who was a drummer asked me if his wife could stay with me, because they were not getting along and they had violent fights. Imagine a man asking a man he barely knows to allow his wife to move in with him. He was an ex-heroin addict, if there is such a thing. He got her pregnant four times while they were married and she had four abortions by the time she was 20. She was suicidal. He was dedicated to his music.

No one will ever convince me Rock and Roll is harmless.

So because I listen to Rock N Roll music, my life is heading south rather quickly?

No.

Why? Because I’m choosing not to live the lifestyle that many people live. The music does not do anything to people as much as the lifestyle. According to your logic, rappers are all murderers. Talk to Grits or Toby Mac, then get back to me.

Once again. It’s not the music people choose to play or listen to, it’s the lifestyle people choose to live.

What stopped Haydn from rejecting Freemasonry? Oh yeah, his buddy Mozart convinced him to join. And Beethoven consumed large amounts of alcohol (which is a drug, by the way) until his liver failure. And I know female classical musicians who dress like prostitutes. And people get stoned listening to classical music. No one will ever convince me classical music is harmless.

Look, the personal experience you shared could occur in any setting. Any musician can have personal drug and sex related issues. It’s not just rock music.
