Robwar, let me correct you on one thing:Actually, that may not be so far fetch. taylor Marshall’s web site
taylormarshall.com/2-14/beatles-butcher-album-abortion.html
has a very insightful article concerning the Beatles. He broke down all the people featured on the cover of Sargent Pepper and the list is a rather horrifying look at very anti-Christian, anti-morals thinker, writers, actors etc. He has posted a picture where they were going to include Hitler but the record company was going to refuse to if he was included. the butcher cover with decapitated baby dolls is equally sickening. I am not so sure why some on this list want to defend them without taking a hard look at what they really ended up promoting to the public. Taylor Marshall likewise has posted the actual quote by john Lennon concerning Jesus and Christianity. 50 years later, is our culture really better off?
My husband a long time fan has now rethought out his admiration and believes now that they weren’t such a great force in shaping our culture.
The butcher cover was the suggestion of an avant garde artist Robert Whitaker who did the album cover artwork. Here is George Harrison remembering the photo session:
*“I thought it was gross, and I also thought it was stupid. Sometimes we all do stupid things, thinking it was cool or hip when it was naïve and dumb, and that was one of them… (we were thinking) I’m disgusted, and especially with the baby dolls with their heads off. What the … is that all about.” *
John Lennon had a slightly different take: *“the photographer was a bit of a surrealist… so we really got into it.” *
(Side note: - this was the last album made exclusively for the US. in the early years of the Beatles they used to split up the UK releases and make “extra” albums for the US market. The album Yesterday and Today was made up of tracks from the UK releases Rubber Soul and Revolver. This was the last album made for the US market.)
Regarding the Sgt Pepper album cover, here is George again:
"I still have no idea who chose some of those people. I think Peter Blake put a lot of the more confusing people in there."
And Paul:
“John wanted a couple of far out ones like Hitler and Jesus, which was John trying to be bold and brassy. He was into risk taking… I didn’t agree with it, but he was just trying to be far out really.”
Robwar, if you’re going to criticize something, it is better to do so from the standpoint of knowledge rather than ignorance.
