They were at one time and then they stopped. So do you still consider them “druggies?” Do you consider recovered addicts to still be “druggies?”

This is probably the most arrogant, asinine thing I have read here. How in the name of good fortune are you able to declare someone that you’ve never spent 5 minutes with to be “godless” or “worship false gods?” Even Pope Francis would not be so presumptuous. Simply incredible.
The Beatles were huge drugheads and they were quite fond of Aleister “to mega therion” Crowley. Pretty crazy stuff.

In any event, I wonder what Father Amorth has to say on the matter 😃 lol

I suppose if you’re a complete numbskull with no education.
Honestly, this looking for evil in every corner stuff is giving Satan way too much credit. Why are we busy giving him so much face time?
I don’t believe that everyone in the world is not smart enough to know the difference between dirty lyrics and simple, entertaining pop songs.
As a musician myself, I find this attitude patronizing and insulting.
I’m all for guarding your soul. Against real threats. Like abortion, agendas of evil intent, and pornography. Old pop music?
Go after real evil instead of peering into the souls of others.
I think the Beatles would be pro abortion and pro evil intent, guised as love. A young listener might see them as nice on the surface and adopt their world view instead. Music is powerful, couple that with a young impressionable mind who wants to fit in, and we’ve got our newest member of the Culture of Death.

Even educated people fall for stupid thinking all the time when they think with their emotions and not their brain.

Ok, so I’m a little Catholic girl that grew up watching the Beatles on Ed Sullivan. I had all their records. I know all of them by heart. I can play most of them on the piano.
And I didn’t renounce my faith, I didn’t engage in risky sexual behaviors, I don’t vote pro-choice, I am an employee of the church.
So what happened? I was exposed to those bad bad Beatles. Big time. So what happened?

You know what happened. I was able to appreciate good music for the fact that it is good music. SHOCKER!
End of story. If you go looking for the boogie man, then you will find him there.
I wasn’t looking for anything but music.

I once heard that if your play any Beatles song backwards you can clearly hear the name of a saint. It’s not the same saint every song and of course it has to be one of their recordings.

Thank you for a much needed dose of common sense. We often hear how Catholics don’t know their faith but it would appear from some of the posts here that Catholics are hopelessly ignorant in other areas of discussion as well.

And I know people who were adults who started thinking differently after they were influenced by the Beatles, their world view, and their lifestyle.

Everyone is different. It doesnt mean ALL will, but certainly SOME will, which is the point Im making. They werent looking for the boogie man either and are educated.

I wouldnt say the Beatles is good music either. I personally enjoy Deep Purple and Black Sabbath. My $.02

So we can, by your own logic, assume you are a druggie? I mean, we can examine the life of the front man for Black Sabbath if you want…
Indeed, let’s look at the name of the band “Black Sabbath”.

Generalizations will always get you in trouble man. You just contradicted your own point.

I’m out.

Nope, I am only into Ronnie James Dio and Ian Gillan era Sabbath bro. Ozzy is overrated.
And i wont lie that at one point I got so into music, I was tempted to experiment with drugs.

I can name three: “Happiness is a Warm Gun” (um, hello? does it get any more suggestive than that?), “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away,” and “Helter Skelter.” .
Happiness is a Warm Gun was based on a hunting magazine that John Lennon saw that had that on the cover. A warm gun is one that was just used to shoot something - in this case hunting. Some have inferred parts of the song are based on heroin use which John Lennon was apparently introduced to around then by Yoko. You’ve Got to Hide your Love Away seems like a love gone bad song. Don’t know what is offensive about that song. Helter Skelter is Paul trying to write a heavy metal song.

I think people sometimes read things into Beatle lyrics that aren’t there.
I think it’s important to remember that the 1964 Beatles of “The Ed Sullivan Show” - the supposedly “innocent” Beatles - only existed for a few years before they got huge.
As the Beatles progressed, they started writing about things other than love/romance which was the main topic of their earlier songs. That doesn’t mean that they are inappropriate to listen to. John’s song Julia is a sad song about his mother who died when he was young. Martha My Dear is about Paul’s sheepdog Martha. George often wrote about eastern philosophy and religion. But his song Savoy Truffle is a cautionary tale he wrote concerning his friend Eric Clapton’s sweet tooth. They could be nonsensical in their later years, but also personal: Paul’s Hey Jude was written for John’s son Julian during John and Cynthia’s divorce. Revolution was John saying to the radicals that if they are for violence then they’ll have to count him out. George’s Here Comes the Sun is a celebration of sunlight after a long stretch of dreariness.

One has to understand that the Beatles wrote songs during the free love, hippy era during the late 60’s. Song of them are obviously about sex and/or drugs or influenced by drugs. Norwegian Wood is about an affair. Why Don’t We Do It in the Road is about… But the Beatles could be almost prudish - Sexy Sadie is an angry response to their guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s (apparently unwelcome) sexual advances made toward Mia Farrow during their extended meditation session in India.

The Beatles are hard to classify - their song topics are as diverse as their musical arrangements. Compare the song “I will” to “Helter Skelter” - both on the same album and you’ll see what I’m talking about. I suppose some of their songs might be a bit suggestive or indicative of 60’s morality. But overall, their music is as refreshing, fun and enjoyable to listen to as it was when it was first released. Enjoy it, and don’t take it too seriously.

Source for this? - on the Crowley point. I think you’re confusing the Beatles with Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin.

As for drugs, they were around during the 60’s and had a hippy period. The only one who might even vaguely qualify as a drug head was Lennon- and that was during a period during the late 60’s. Paul and George were the least drug users and Ringo was kind of a partier. He’s been sober since the early 80’s. Paul was healthy enough to play his tail off for 3 hours nonstop last summer at the concert I attended.

If you look at the words to some of the Beatles’ songs, they are rather amazing and make you think:

“Eleanor Rigby”

Ah, look at all the lonely people
Ah, look at all the lonely people

Eleanor Rigby picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been
Lives in a dream
Waits at the window, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door
Who is it for?

All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?

Father McKenzie writing the words of a sermon that no one will hear
No one comes near
Look at him working, darning his socks in the night when there’s nobody there
What does he care?

All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?

Ah, look at all the lonely people
Ah, look at all the lonely people

Eleanor Rigby died in the church and was buried along with her name
Nobody came
Father McKenzie wiping the dirt from his hands as he walks from the grave
No one was saved

All the lonely people (Ah, look at all the lonely people)
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people (Ah, look at all the lonely people)
Where do they all belong?

Always liked that song. It has been said that John Lennon was the better lyricist in the Beatles and Paul was the best at creating the music/melodies. But this song of Paul’s has interesting lyrics. It was also different because there are no guitar, bass or drums on the song - only stringed instruments.

Here are the words to another “immoral” Beatles song:

“Let It Be”

When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
And in my hour of darkness
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

And when the broken hearted people
Living in the world agree
There will be an answer, let it be
For though they may be parted
There is still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Yeah there will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

Let it be, let it be
Ah let it be, yeah let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be
And when the night is cloudy
There is still a light that shines on me
Shine on until tomorrow, let it be
I wake up to the sound of music,
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
Yeah let it be, let it be
Let it be, yeah let it be
Oh there will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Let it be, yeah let it be
Oh there will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Ah let it be, yeah let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

Actually, that may not be so far fetch. taylor Marshall’s web site
taylormarshall.com/2-14/beatles-butcher-album-abortion.html
has a very insightful article concerning the Beatles. He broke down all the people featured on the cover of Sargent Pepper and the list is a rather horrifying look at very anti-Christian, anti-morals thinker, writers, actors etc. He has posted a picture where they were going to include Hitler but the record company was going to refuse to if he was included. the butcher cover with decapitated baby dolls is equally sickening. I am not so sure why some on this list want to defend them without taking a hard look at what they really ended up promoting to the public. Taylor Marshall likewise has posted the actual quote by john Lennon concerning Jesus and Christianity. 50 years later, is our culture really better off?
My husband a long time fan has now rethought out his admiration and believes now that they weren’t such a great force in shaping our culture.

Can you name a “Big rock star” that is really “nice?”

ok ok, Besides Bono…
The same Bono who tosses up f-bombs when he’s accepting awards? (Prior to Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction, Bono was the FCC’s big problem child.)

A big rock star who is really “nice”? Alice Cooper. Does a yearly benefit for his Christian outreach program for kids. Really salt-of-the-earth kind of guy underneath all the makeup. Did the Beatles ever set up their own faith-based organization? No. All they did they was sell their back catalog to Michael Jackson - Michael Jackson! - to rake in more dough.

Really? :roll eyes: Did you know that Lennon wanted to include Jesus, too, but He was left off to avoid controversy? Does THAT change anything?

BTW, your link doesn’t work but I will tell you the story about Lennon’s “more popular than Jesus” quote. Lennon was talking to a reporter about the influence and popularity that bands like The Beatles and all of the British Invasion bands, including those who were getting big here in America were achieving. The comparison was one of music vs. religious devotion in Britain. I’m sure you know that the practice of religion in Europe has dropped dramatically after the first and second World Wars and that in England specifically it was on a rapid decline (it still is to this day.) Lennon’s assertion that “we,” meaning those in the music field, are more “popular” than Jesus was a true fact. Here in America, even Catholic attendance began to drop after about 1957. Why this is such a scandal to you is beyond me. Are you aware that even the Vatican’s newspaper at the time defended Lennon? Are you aware that many of the writers of the classics of literature or music were depraved in their private life? Why are the Beatles held to a standard that no one else is held to? All of this sounds like the work of evangelical protestants. I keep waiting for another thread telling us how Hotel California is about satanic worship. :roll eyes: Or how George Harrison’s My Sweet Lord can invite demonic possession because he sings “hare krishna” in it ( this is no joke; this thread is in the popular media forum).

But, I know that you read it on the internet so it must be true, huh?

Europeans have a different concept in the use of what we call profanity. Bono is not the only working class Irish guy who speaks like that.

First off, they didn’t sell it to Michael Jackson to “rake in more dough”; it was bought by Jackson and Sony Records after the previous owner managed to wrestle control of it from the Beatles due to their business incompetence. So, not only do you have the facts wrong, you don’t even know what you are talking about.

Oh, and how many faith-based organizations have you set up? Instead of looking for the speck in another’s eye, you may want to look for the plank in your own.

Statutory warning: the reply below is intended as satire. Woe to anyone who takes it seriously

Q.E.D. These songs are instruments of Darth Vader himself! 😃 😛
When I started reading your post I though “Oh my freaking gosh, you have to be kidding me!” Then I realized at the end what you were getting at LOL You have me going for a second. Very clever and funny! 😉

On the topic of this thread… It is secular music. It is going to have elements of secularism in it. The Beatles old music is not vulgar. May some lyrics in some of their songs have double meanings? Maybe… I don’t care. Heck, I listen to The old blues music like “Muddy waters” … To quote his lyrics

“I got a black cat bone… I got a Mojo too… I got the John the conqueror root… Ive got to mess with you”

A black cat bone is something used for “Hoodoo” kind of a form of “Voodoo” So is a “Mojo” and a “John the conqueror root” I like the song. I can assure you it is not planting any seeds that will lead to me desiring to try voodoo. If I even for a second though it would, then I would consider it a occasion of sin and try to avoid it like the plague. Muddy waters was a black man raised in the south and he most likely saw a lot of the practice of voodoo. Whether he did it himself or not I don’t know. Point is, the culture he was around did so he sang about it. I find that song less offensive than 99% of music today. I don’t like to listen to very suggestively sexual songs. Why? It can be a occasion of sin for me, because I battle impure thoughts on a daily basis. I don’t want to aggravate that.

Johnny Cash… “But I shot a man in reno… just to watch him die”

I am not condoning murder by listening to “Folsom prison blues” which those lyrics came from and it is not leading me to a more passive view of murder.

It all depends how seriously you take music. It is a great gift from God, but some people seem to even make a idol out of music and obsess over it. Not smart.

I would not worry about The Beatles. I heard a song a few years ago “F this, F you, F that, F society” and so fourth. Worry about those songs…
