There’s this myth out there that if you pray for humility, you’re going to suffer immensely.

My experience was quite the opposite.
I didn’t develop acne.
I didn’t gain 20 pounds overnight.
My ex didn’t show up with a new girl.
I didn’t get reprimanded at work.
And my past was suddenly revealed to all my friends.

Life went on as usual, no more or less anxiety-producing than any other day.

I was just aware of opportunities to stop worrying about what people thought of me.
thank you and God bless. I will try this prayer. Be not afraid.

Oh my goodness, I really need to check my typing before hitting submit reply. 😊

Letting go of wanting to be approved of. This is wonderful. I’ll try the prayer. I hope I don’t wake up with acne or perhaps run into my ex with a new girl. I don’t trust the Lord enough.
:rotfl: Well, even though God has a sense of humor, I don’t think he’d go that far just to make you laugh. 😛

Disinterest in how others treat me lets me love them as God loves them, not as I would love them. To gain this is to gain freedom, and peace of mind and heart.
What great insight! It is true that you can’t worry about how others treat you and expect to be at peace. But the ego will always come to the surface and say “but you are being treated badly by this person, you deserve better.” Stuffing down the ego is almost an impossible task in life.

I think of the many times I have been angry at God, yelled and screamed, turned my back on him, etc. Did my actions hurt God? Probably. Did he treat me like dirt since I treated him that way? No. Did God have a disinterest in how I treated him? No, he just replaced it with love. He continued to love me.

I am trying to act that way with someone in my life now. Boy, is it hard to be disinterested enough in how you are treated by someone and replace the hurt feelings with love. I have to get over the feeling that “I deserve better” and realize that by loving someone the way God loves me is the “better that I deserve.”

To a degree there is ego in it. I don’t feel comfortable with your opinion. I’m a person I think I deserve to be treated with respect. How is that evidence of pride? After all, I’m made in Christ image. As a very passive person, I think I need the voice to speak up. We all have different paths or areas of work.

I’ve spent my whole life thinking that I deserved better from people. I never got anything better from people. So did I not deserve it? No, from an ego perspective I did deserve to be treated better but it wasn’t going to happen. I couldn’t make it happen. I was a very quiet person growing up and bullied. When I started speaking up, the bullying continued just in a different way. So, I started to think, “gee, what is it that I need to learn about living?” Nothing I did seemed to work, be humble, be not humble, it all seemed to end up with me being miserable.

Then I went through a dark night of the soul for years where what I was as a person meant absolutely nothing. God even felt completely absent from my life. Yet, I came out of that with my ego still wanting control, until last spring when a series of events happened which taught me that people will never give you what you deserve, only God can do that. In return all you can do is love people and sometimes that love is forgiving, walking away and looking on from a distance until God deals with them. Hardest thing in life to do, almost impossible.

As Jesus said, “the meek shall inherit the earth.” What does that mean? I still really don’t know what it means but it always stung me when I heard it growing up. I guess that is the lesson I’m supposed to learn. I’m still learning it and will until I die.

God bless your soul. Give you strength. Perhaps you’re somewhat of a people pleaser. This is a guess
