Little house on the prairy. ah, the good old days!

I’ve recently been watching “little house on the prairy” on the hallmark channel. I had never watched it before and man, I am amaized at how aweful TV has gotten over the years. too bad they don’t make shows like this anymore! I"m getting the show on DVD slowly and plan on saving it for when I have children so they will have something wholsome to watch.
anyone love this show? do you have a favorite episode?

I liked the episode where Mary went blind. my mom is blind and I thought they had a great portrail of what it’s like.

I also love the episode where Laura meets her husband for the first time. “manly” is so cute.
 
I’m 49 so I seen them from the begining, I also read all Laura Ingalls Wilder’s series on little house, as did my daughter. They are great for children. and yes, “Manly” is a cutie;) and no matter what generation you lived in everybody knew a girl like Nellie.
 
oh yes, she drives me nuts. I keep wondering if she’ll ever turn nice, but my mom said she never will. my mother loves all those stories. my sister, Laura Elisabeth, is named after the author 🙂 mom had that name picked out when she was like 10 years old!

It is sad how TV has degraded. If they made Little House on the Prarie today one of the girls would be a lesbian and the other would be a tramp and the mother would be fooling around with the beared guy. I had Direct TV at one time and 90% of what I watched was EWTN. Some of the other channels though were pure garbage.

You are so right, the quality of TV has dropped so bad. For example I loved the Brady Bunch, corny yeah, but it usually had a moral in it. Every Friday night we faithfully would watch it. Petticoat Junction and Green Acres also kept you laughing and did not need to stoop to lowering standards.
 
I haven’t seen Little House in quite a while but enjoyed the show growing up. Another show I like is The Waltons… I am 40 now, and used to watch the reruns while I was in college… my roommates thought that a bit odd… but it was an awesome show. 👍

Very well done and wholesome like Little house.

The real Manly wasn’t that good looking, IMO 😦

To the OP, if you like the show, you should read the books. You can buy a Little House Cookbok that contains recipes for many of the dishes mentioned in the books. You can also buy books w/ photos of the real people! (which is why I think the tv Manly was better looking than the real one)

When homeschooling my youngest, we used the Prairie Primer one year. Except for Math, the curriculum was built around the LH books. It was fun. Some neat Laura Ingalls Wilder sites:

You can get the whole series from Net Flicks! We have been reading the series with the children and will be getting the whole series through net flick when we are done!

Yes, TV is getting very disturbing!

I once watched a Korean Soap, they run like mini-series, with a definate beginning and end. (I was in Hawaii at the time and a little curious) Point being, for they to hold hands on the show was to show they were going to get married. A kiss on the cheek was as far as they went. Very different from our shows!

oh, thanks for the links. wow! a little house homeschooling corriculum! my hubby will probably turn cartwheels. I think Charles Ingles is his role model. although, he’s got a long way to go 🙂 I’m going to check those out though. thanks for sharing.

I just received a catalog from catholicvideo.com and there is a whole set of 9 seasons available & some specials…
I asked them which one they liked the best and they both agread that Season 6 was their favorite so far (they are 9 & 13).
I’m going to order it for them as a reward for their excellent report cards…🙂 (both go to very orthodox Catholic school)…😉
 
Another great post! I just watched LHOTP on Friday and it was the episode where Laura has the teaching job and Manly falls in love with her- they dance at the church social at the end. I’ve probably seen it 20 times but I still had a tear in my eye!

For a set of six DVDs - $49.99 BTW, series 6 is from 1979-80 in case anyone was wondering. They start from 1974-75 - Season 1 and go to Series 9 - 1982-83).
 
We have all the season DVDs and watch them together as a family. We all love them. We even went to Walnut Grove, Minnesota for our family vacation last summer. Good, pure, simple times.

My grandchildren are asking about going there for a vacation…🙂 When they read and watched the *Anne of Green Gables *series…they went to Canada to visit the lands where is was to have taken place…(my father’s side of the family comes from there)🙂
 
It was a very nice trip. My wife and daughters waded through Plum Creek, we ate a Nellie’s and shopped at Oleson’s Merchantile. The museum is a must see, as is the original homestead site. The girls all brought back small handfulls of rocks from Plum Creek. It will always be one of my all time favorite family times.
 
I love Little House! I’ve been collecting the seasons. I just have the last season left to get. I’ll have to get it soon so that I can curl up and watch classic TV. I know what you mean about TV going downhill. I wonder what it will be like in 20 years? If it keeps going like it is now, heaven help me.

Much like “The Walton’s,” I always thought the earlier episodes of “Little House” were the best, although they were all good quality.

I thought that when I re-watched them as an adult, these shows would seem corny; instead, I was struck by the good writing, acting, and directing that they show. And there is great depth to many of the episodes (remember watching the emotions of Charles run from joy to fear, anger, despair, then acceptance, when a storm destroys their crop?).

oh yes and then how he goes out to work hard to provide for them and his wife and all the women work hard (using Ruth from scripture as their role model) trying to harvest the dammaged wheet. it was so GREAT! I love that episode and cried my eyes out like I do during most of the shows.

to the person who went to Walnut Grove for vacation. do they have vacation packages? are there near by hotels to stay in? was it a costly vacation? something like that sounds so wonderful for a family to do!
